Who’s Carrying Your ‘Journey of Life’ Baggage?

The country of Nepal, located in southern Asia, is best known for the majestic Himalayan Mountains. Mount Everest plays the starring role, as many seek to conquer its incredible height by climbing. To reach the top requires extensive training, the highest quality equipment, and an expert to guide you. Perhaps the most important of all three is the guide. In Nepal, these guides are called sherpas. These natives not only guide but carry the climber’s equipment, which is usually more than 100 pounds. In order to reach the top of Everest, a sherpa is a must.

We can compare the journey of life to that of climbing a mountain like Mount Everest. When we are young, we find ourselves at the base of the mountain. There’s really no need for specific gear, aside from proper walking shoes maybe. The journey is easy. As a child, we recover quickly from injury, get plenty of sleep, don’t worry much, and eat what we want.

As we begin our ascent, we may not even realize it because the incline is so slight. Yet, we are still moving forward in our journey of life, into our teen years and early adulthood. Many of us play sports, enjoying the intensity of it. But that also comes with more intense injuries from fractures, concussions, and even surgery to repair things. Again, we recover quickly. We are young. Eating what we want, when we want – like those midnight fast-food runs!

Climbing still further up that mountain, we begin to feel the incline. We need more gear to keep us moving forward. The sherpa is ready for this. In our life, our 20s and 30s mean career and kids. This also means lack of sleep, a more sedentary lifestyle, and a body that takes on a bit more weight than it should. But, it seems to be the norm for people your age so you just accept it.

As the climb continues, the oxygen levels get thinner, the temperature decreases, and the journey much more difficult. Thank goodness for the sherpa and all that extra gear. If only we had a sherpa in real life! Unfortunately, we are our own sherpa, carrying all the baggage we accumulate over the years. From extra weight from lack of exercise; fatigue from lack of sleep due to career, kids, hot flashes, pregnancy, and worry; to injuries we might have sustained from accidents or falls. In other words, life happens.

The good news is that we can choose to offload some of the “gear” we are carrying as our own sherpa through self-care. In other words, we can choose to lose that extra weight, we can choose to help ourselves handle stress through massage or working out, we can choose to resolve that pain we have been dealing with for years. A solution like this does not just happen. It requires a commitment to oneself and the desire for change.

Chronic Conditions and Chiropractic Care

There are many conditions that the general public does not associate with chiropractic care. While the reasons are varied, it essentially boils down to a lack of easily found information. For example, grab a magazine or newspaper and you will likely find it filled with ads from larger companies. If you turn on the radio or television, whose commercials do you hear? Again, sizable companies that can afford to purchase the airtime plus the production of a commercial. Even online, those who spend the most, get the most views.

Big business has deeper pockets to literally infiltrate every media outlet. In fact, studies show that the average adult is exposed to over 5,ooo messages – per day! Business is in business to make money. As a result, an advertisement or commercial needs to be convincing and compelling so you buy. But, does that mean the ad is the best option available to you?

History tells us that many products and services have come and gone as more information became available to the general public. Take cigarettes, saccharine, flame retardants, bisphenol A (BPA), and parabens (found in make-up). The public took these products at face value and believed what the advertisements stated. In addition, we even trusted that our government was protecting our best interests. The lesson learned here? That we need to actively advocate for ourselves and not let those who have the deepest pockets win our vote. As a result, we owe it to ourselves and our children to do our homework.

When it comes to our health, advocating for ourselves will reveal that what we thought we knew is actually wrong. Wrong, because we let mainstream media and big pharma tells us what was right. Chiropractic care has faced an uphill battle in proving its tremendous value in better health. Yet countless studies, testimonials, research and historical data prove that it has countless benefits. A chiropractor does far more that successfully treat those suffering from back and neck pain.

Due to this misinformation, below are several chronic conditions that many people do not realize can be treated with chiropractic care :

Adrenal Fatigue Progression

There are four stages involved in the progression of adrenal fatigue as a result of stress:

  1. Alarm Reaction
  2. Resistance Response
  3. Exhaustion
  4. Failure

The first phase, Alarm Reaction, is also known as the fight or flight response. This is a necessary reaction to survival. The body kicks into high gear to deal with the stressor that the body has encountered which means an increase in cortisol.

In the second phase, Resistance Response, the stressor is still affecting the body’s ability to produce cortisol. This is a gradual process, but the result is that the adrenal glands simply cannot keep up. In the third phase adrenal exhaustion occurs. This phase might take a few years to occur and actually impact the sex hormones, too. The impact of the stressor takes a toll on the rest of the body, not just the adrenal glands. This happens because the body redirects energy to focus on cortisol production to keep up with demand. Imbalances in the sex hormones (estrogen, progesterone, and androgens) are a common precursor to adrenal failure.

The final phase of adrenal fatigue is failure. The glands are completely exhausted and the patient has a significantly higher chance of heart failure.

So what does this all mean to you? Well, think about the stress that is running rampant in our society. It seems that from the moment we wake up until the moment our heads hit the pillow at night, we are on the run. Running to prepare breakfast, get the kids off to school and ourselves to work. We also rush to get the errands run, dinner on the table, kids to games, practices, recitals, and meetings. Now what about homework, laundry, the dog walked and fed. When does it end?

Life is not a race. Every hour of the day is not meant to be filled with an excess of activities. We are not machines. There is a limit to what our body can do. If we treat it like a machine, we are equipping ourselves for failure. And this failure could cost us our life.

The Truth About Stressors

Stress has become normal in today’s society. In fact, we have become so accustomed to living with it that we take it with us on vacation. Do we mistakenly believe that the level of stress in our life equates to how successful we are? Or that there is nothing we can really do about it? Perhaps we believe it really isn’t harming us because everyone is living this way. Maybe it’s time to seek the truth about stress, understanding the causes of it, and it’s impact on our body.

Stress is a natural response to something we find difficult, scary, worrisome, frustrating, or demanding. It is a survival mechanism that is physical in nature. However, it was never intended to be a constant state of being like it seems to be today. The adrenal glands, located on top of each kidney, allow our body to cope with the effects of stress through the release of hormones. One of the most important hormones released is called cortisol, because without this our body is unable to deal with the effects of stress.

You might be asking yourself, “what type of stress can cause problems?” Listed below are some of the more common stressors:

  • Chronic conditions such as fatigue, illness, infection, and pain
  • Excessive behaviors such as exercise, sugar consumption, and caffeine
  • Sleep deprivation
  • Late hours
  • Surgery
  • Depression

When faced with stressors, the body responses by stimulating the production of cortisol. You may recall the term “fight or flight.” The cortisol provides the energy necessary for the body to deal with the stressors. Over time, the continual release of cortisol exhausts the adrenal glands, yet cortisol is still produced. Our body is designed to help us survive, so this is the one hormonal system that does not shut down, especially during prolonged stress. This is not a good situation for our body and here’s why:

  • A consistently high cortisol level creates reduced insulin sensitivity which over time can lead to diabetes.
  • A lowered ability to fight infections.
  • An increased loss in bone mass which can lead to osteoporosis.
  • Increased fat around the waist.
  • Increased water and salt retention which can lead to high blood pressure.
  • Higher levels of estrogen which is linked to breast cancer and uterine fibroids.

The Cervical Spine

There are four distinct parts of the human spine – cervical, thoracic, lumbar, and the sacrum/coccyx. Each of these parts contains the nerves responsible for specific functions of the body. For the sake of this blog post, the focus will be on the cervical spine, or neck region, of the body, and the possible symptoms indicating a potential problem.

There are seven vertebrae in the cervical spine. Each of these vertebrae are labeled with the letter C and a number between one and seven. For example, C1 is called the Axis and contains the nerves that provide the blood supply to the head, controls the pituitary gland, scalp, the bones of the face, brain, inner and middle ear, and sympathetic nervous system. When there is a misalignment of the vertebrae and disc in the C1, irritation can occur. This irritation can cause a multitude of symptoms such as:

  • headaches
  • nervousness
  • insomnia
  • head colds
  • high blood pressure
  • migraine headaches
  • nervous breakdowns
  • amnesia
  • chronic fatigue
  • dizziness

Remember, there are 7 vertebrae in the cervical spine and the symptoms listed above are only for the first vertebrae. You can see how the spine is like the main thoroughfare, where everything in the body is connected. Can you see how if you simply treat the symptom, like taking aspirin for a headache, how it is only a temporary fix if the vertebrae are not in alignment? Yes, the aspirin makes the pain go away, but the problem still exists. Yes, the sleep aids help you to control your chronic tiredness, but the true problem has not been addressed. There is no light at the end of the tunnel. If you knew that you could prevent your headaches from happening in the first place, or lower your blood pressure without the aid of prescription medications, or sleep better at night naturally, would you pursue that means?

Chiropractic adjustments realign the spine so the vertebrae are not putting pressure on the nerves that control the various parts of our body. Chiropractic adjustments correct the spine from the wear and tear we put our body through each day. It allows our body to function as it was intended to. It allows us to improve our quality of life and live pain-free. It gives our body the maintenance it deserves.

Know Your Body

We make many assumptions on people based on clothes that are worn, cars that are driven, positions that are held, or where someone lives. We make assumptions about food based on how it smells, looks, or is prepared. We make assumptions about a book based on the design of its cover, the number of pages, or its author. We also make assumptions about our body, like how well we think we know it. But just like any assumption, we are taking a great risk in limiting our understanding of something that could have far reaching implications for us. It’s like living with blinders on.

When it comes to our body, we take for granted that if we are pain-free, mobile, and generally feeling good that we are essentially in the clear for any type of problem. And while that may very well be the case, it may just as easily not be. How well do you know your body? When was the last time you quieted your mind and focused on you? Was there ever a time that you really took inventory of all that you really are? If you do invest time in yourself, what do you see when you look in the mirror or step on the scale? Do you see dark under-eye circles? Acne? Bloated stomach? Cellulite? Thinning hair? Dandruff? What do you see that you have the power to change? Think about it carefully before you answer. Why? Because changing some things may require more time than others, but that is okay. Do not let the time element scare you.

The truth is that while we may think we feel good and therefore are okay, the reality is that we may not be. Knowing your body and taking responsibility for it are essential to living a life of wellness. It just doesn’t happen. And while applying a temporary fix to any number of symptoms will work, it simply does not address the underlying problem. Yes, we can add concealer to our dark under-eye circles, but we have not addressed the cause which could be anything from fatigue to a food allergy. Or, yes, we can use anti-dandruff shampoo to rid ourselves of the flakes, but we have not addressed what is really going on which could be a microbial imbalance on the scalp.

The best investment we could ever make for ourselves and those we love is in ourselves, specifically our body and what it is telling us on a daily basis.

Finding the Root Cause

In the field of law there are attorneys. Just as in the field of medicine there are doctors. However, within each field there are countless specialties. In law, there are attorneys that specialize in real estate transactions, divorce, legal defense, prosecution, corporate, and tax. With medicine, there are doctors that specialize in pediatrics, cancer, surgery, heart, female reproduction, and trauma. It is good to have specialities because when there is a specific problem, we want a specific answer, not generalities. When it comes to our health, we know preventative is best. But there are inevitably times when that doesn’t happen and we get sick or injured. Sometimes when that happens there is a ripple effect. Symptoms may be alleviated, but the underlying problem may persist. The good news is that with our overall wellness, there are doctors that focus on finding the root cause of the problem and preventing future problems. One of those doctors is a Doctor of Chiropractic.

What many people don’t realize is that a Doctor of Chiropractic chooses this field of practice because he or she believes in a holistic approach to a person’s health. Each part of a person is intimately connected – mentally, physically, emotionally. What happens to one part of us affects all the others. We cannot separate things into compartments. Chiropractors also believe that prescription medications tend to mask the underlying problem and have the potential to create other problems for the person down the road, too. Chiropractors work tirelessly to resolve the root cause of the problem, whether it’s pain, discomfort, lack of mobility or flexibility, migraines, fatigue, or inflammation. If you have never been treated by a chiropractor this may sound counterintuitive to what we have been exposed to in the media and press with respect to what one might call “modern day medicine.” You needn’t look too far to find countless advertisements for prescription medications offering a solution to various health ailments. But do they always solve the true cause of your problem?

Chiropractic care is a comprehensive approach to the overall wellness of the entire individual. It seeks to understand, then provide a solution to the real problem. It finds the cause.

The Healing Crisis

“Two steps forward, one step back.”

This familiar saying seems to capture the true essence of healing. At Damron Chiropractic & Wellness (DCW), healing is our top priority. However, healing is a process that not only takes time but also involves various stages. The stage that surprises our patients the most is called the Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction. This is also called the healing crisis stage. While it might seem odd to have the words healing and crisis connected, this is exactly what is happening within the body. Healing actually means the body is eliminating the toxins that are existing within it. The healing crisis is the temporary worsening of symptoms as the body goes through the process of getting well. It is normal and to be expected. Unfortunately, if we are unaware of this stage in our healing we might think something is wrong. We then want to stop whatever it is we are doing to heal, and then find ourselves once again right back where we started – in pain.

At DCW we are big advocates of education. We believe that with knowledge comes the power to transform your life. All to often it is misconceptions, or a lack of understanding, that leaves people living with pain and discomfort. Many times, the people who walk through our doors have tried to address their pain in other ways, without success. From the onset, every team member at DCW works to identify, address, educate, and resolve whatever issue brought that person to us.

When it comes to healing, knowing that you will inevitably take “two steps forward, and one step back” at some point in the process is an important sign that you are on the right path. It means your body is responding well to the treatment you are receiving. Your body is working hard to heal, and sometimes that means experiencing additional symptoms such as nausea, poor coordination, headaches, and fatigue. The good news is that this is a temporary situation and one that resolves in only a couple of days.

Remember, healing is a process. It doesn’t happen overnight. It requires work. Your body is equipped to know what it’s supposed to do. Give it the room it needs to heal itself. Your body will thank you and you will benefit because you will feel the difference.

Menopause and Andropause

By the year 2050, one in five Americans will be older than age 50, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. While getting older is a goal we all strive towards, we experience bumps along the road as our body ages. For a woman, a major bump is menopause, which marks the end of her reproductive period. For a man, he has a similar experience with andropause. Both have the ability to cause profound changes in a person’s life with the manifestation various symptoms. However, with a proactive approach through the care of a chiropractor, the bumps along the way can be minimized so that aging can be both healthy and happy.

The decline in hormones during menopause does not happen suddenly to a woman. Over a period of 6-8 years prior to menopause, the hormones estrogen and progesterone begin to fluctuate. This fluctuation leads to profound changes to a woman’s body and life. These changes include irregular periods, mood swings, irritability, hot flashes, night sweats, disturbed sleep, increased abdominal fat, and urinary problems. Additionally, after menopause, the likelihood of other health conditions increase as well, from bone loss and heart disease to memory loss and loss of libido. However, many of these symptoms can respond favorably to changes in nutrition, exercise, and dietary supplements. Interestingly, exercise is one of the most important and effective ways to prevent or improve these menopausal symptoms.

In men, the hormone testosterone begins to decline in their 50s. Just as with women, men can experience significant changes and health concerns during this period of life. Examples include loss of sexual function, weight gain, fatigue, bone loss, anemia, and declining muscle strength. Under the care of a chiropractor, a man experiencing andropause can help offset this change with exercise and dietary changes. A diet that incorporates a heart-healthy foods is the ideal such as the Mediterranean diet which is high in fruit, vegetables, whole grains and fish. There is a significant correlation between good cardiovascular health and improved sexual health.

Aligning yourself with a reputable chiropractor as your partner in healthy aging can provide you with the tools to increase the quality of your life, no matter what phase it may be.

Identifying a Concussion

concussion-word-art4An injury to your brain can be deadly, especially because the injury is typically something you cannot physically see. The person experiencing the injury may not even know how extensive it is and may exhibit normal behaviors to those around them. This does not mean the injury is minimal or that the person is okay. In fact, of all injuries a person can sustain, one to the brain can be the most deadly because of its elusive nature. A brain injury, or concussion, happens when a person sustains a blow to the head, or suffers an injury that jars or shakes the brain inside the skull. Knowing the signs to look for after someone experiences this injury can mean the difference between life and death.

Football is a national past-time. We love it at all levels of play. Recently, there has been a lot of media coverage regarding the concussions sustained by NFL players and the debilitating side effects that have handicapped them for life. But, a concussion can happen at any age, and not just with football either. A fall on the ice, a collision with another player during a soccer game, a hit in the head with a lacrosse stick can all cause a concussion.

Surprisingly, only 10% of concussions actually result in loss of consciousness. If that’s the reality, what happens the other 90% of the time? To help you identify whether or not someone has suffered a concussion, here is a list of common symptoms:

  • headaches/migraines
  • visual problems
  • light sensitivity
  • noise sensitivity
  • nausea
  • dizziness
  • attention problems
  • trouble with memory
  • fogginess
  • fatigue
  • trouble sleeping
  • sleeping less than normal
  • sleeping more than normal
  • increased emotions
  • sadness
  • irritability
  • nervousness

To be safe, it’s always best to seek medical treatment with any head injury. And although a concussion is considered a “manageable injury” by healthcare professionals, the key is early detection and proper treatment.

Dr. Andrew Damron, Chiropractor

Dr. Damron established DCW because he was fed up with the current health model. Statistics continue to show an increase in pharmaceutical prescriptions to patients every day. Although he does believe some medications are necessary, he believes the majority of what is prescribed is actually harmful to the patient’s long-term health, creating another set of healthcare issues as a result. Dr. Damron believes DCW’s unique approach to achieving overall wellness will revolutionize the healthcare industry through collaborative care utilizing chiropractic, massage therapy, rehabilitation, and nutrition. The DCW focus addresses the whole person versus a only symptom and uncovers the root cause. He also believes that education is vital to sustaining a healthier more vibrant lifestyle as well. His goal is to create a healthier society and a better place for our children to live.
Dr. Damron began his medical career with a Biology Degree from Wright State University in 2002. He went on to receive his Doctorate of Chiropractic from the prestigious Palmer College of Chiropractic in Port Orange, Florida in 2007. While attending Palmer, he had the opportunity to travel abroad to Madagascar and provide chiropractic care to the native Malagasy people. Dr. Damron has continued his post-graduate studies with a focus on nutrition, rehabilitation, and functional medicine.
Dr. Damron and his wife, Kristy, reside in West Chester with their two young children, Graden and Isabelle. An avid Buckeye fan, Dr. Damron enjoys playing the guitar in a band with his college friends, watching/playing any sport, cooking, reading, and attending concerts, especially the Dave Matthews Band and Foo Fighters.

Dr. Washam was introduced to Chiropractic by his mother at the age of 16. She was working for a Chiropractor at the time, experiencing all the benefits that Chiropractic care had to offer, and thus began taking Dr. Washam and his siblings in for regular adjustments. Dr. Washam had been experiencing painful bouts of Strep Throat from the age of 8, which always included a 10 day course of antibiotics. While under Chiropractic care his doctor convinced him to avoid the antibiotics and receive Chiropractic adjustments instead. To his amazement, Dr. Washam’s strep throat symptoms had vanished within three days and he never had an issue from that point forward. He was so astounded by his experience that he fell in love with Chiropractic and decided that was the path for him. He wanted to commit his life to helping people through the power of Chiropractic, just as it had helped him.
Dr. Greg Washam began his college education at the University of Cincinnati, studying biology. After he made the decision to become a Chiropractor, he attended Logan College of Chiropractic in St. Louis, MO. While at Logan, he received his Bachelor of Science in Biology and Life Sciences in 2009. He received his Doctorate of Chiropractic in 2011. Dr. Washam was presented with various awards upon graduation. These included Dean’s List honors, the Senior Intern Assistant Award, and the Award of Excellence from the Division of Research. He has completed many hours of post graduate education focusing on nutrition, supplementation and injury recovery.
Dr. Washam and his wife Kassie reside in Mason, Oh with their two daughters, Lillian and Wren. In his free time, Dr. Washam enjoys cooking, exploring new restaurants, touring local craft breweries and reading. He also spends a great deal of time outdoors with his family and his Beagle, Willow. Dr. Washam is a music enthusiast and listens to all genres of music. He especially loves classic rock from the 60’s and 70’s. His favorite band of all time is Led Zeppelin.

Brooke had never been to a medical office where she really felt like they cared more about her than her money until she came to DCW as a patient. DCW made it so easy to arrange financial payment with, they were compassionate, dedicated and most importantly 100% honest. Brooke has a background in business finance and computer technology prior to the start of her medical career. She attended Southern State and obtained an Associate’s Degree in Science, R.N. Sh began working from DCW in December of 2014.
Brooke has five beautiful girls from 15 to 6 years old. She is married to Jamey Snyder who has two boys of his own. She lives on a two acre farm in the country with horses, dogs, cats, and a pot belly pig. Brooke enjoys spending time with her very active family and watching their kids play sports.

Nicole always wanted a career that was focused on helping people. It wasn’t until she drove past the Dayton School of Medical Massage on a daily basis that it became clear what she was meant to do. She enrolled as soon as she could and it has been the best decision she has ever made. She loves the feeling of knowing she has alleviated someone’s pain and possibly made their day better in some way. She had been working alongside chiropractors for over 7 years before joining the DCW team. Before DCW she never really felt her opinions and insights were valued or even asked for, which she felt hindered patient care and the effectiveness of each treatment. At DCW she feels valued and part of a practice that is focused on changing the approach of wellness with cohesive and effective patient care.
Nicole is a graduate of the Dayton School of Medical Massage and obtained her license in 2008. She utilizes Deep Tissue, Swedish and Thai massage techniques to relieve pain, tension, and stress while increasing range of motion and flexibility.
Nicole is married to her husband of 5 years and they one daughter, Rylee, and one child on the way due in September 2016. As a family they enjoy camping, hiking and spending time at the lake during the summer.

Erika Pantona, Insurance Specialist

Erika started coming to DCW in 2010 after spending two years in substantial pain after an injury. She had spent those two years at various specialists and taking medications to simply get up in the morning due to the pain. She was 18 when she found herself facing a major, life altering surgery (SI Fusion) and realized there must be another way. When she began her treatment plan at DCW she started to have days with little or no pain. She stopped taking her medications and realized they had been affecting her overall mood. In 2015 Erika joined the DCW team because they allowed her to live her life once again. She wants to prevent others from living in pain like she did unnecessarily, and to receive the benefits of chiropractic care.
Erika is well versed in the insurance industry with her previous employment at Express Scripts and Anthem.
Erika has two siblings and resides in Liberty Township. In her spare time she enjoys traveling and hiking with her family.

After moving to Ohio in 2010, I was in need of some relief from minor pain associated with working in customer service fields for 15 years. I was interested in seeking alternative forms of therapy and found a chiropractor in our small town. After going for a few visits, the therapy seemed somewhat outdated compared to what I had researched. In talking with my husband, he remembered that he knew someone who was a chiropractor. After just a few visits with Dr. Damron, I definitely noticed a difference in his techniques and style. It was nice to see results and feel like I was being listened to as a patient, not just heard…something you don’t always feel with doctors. After being a patient for several years, the opportunity came about to join the DCW team. It would be something different from what I had done in my past, however I knew my passion for working with people would translate well into helping patients receive the best care possible. I believed in the mission of DCW as a patient, and I am excited to be part of living that mission every day. 
 I am originally from St. Louis, MO. I graduated from the University of Missouri – Columbia with a degree in Secondary Education – Language Arts. I worked in restaurant/catering management for several years before starting a career in retail management and training.
In that position, I met my husband, Matt, who is from Wilmington, OH. After we got married in 2010, I moved to Wilmington. Realizing retail wasn’t where my heart was any longer, I began working as a substitute teacher in the Clinton County area. Matt and I live in Wilmington with our 6 year old German Shepard, Dale. I enjoy camping, boating, riding 4-wheelers, and spending time with family and friends. I love St. Louis Cardinals baseball and am a recently converted Cincinnati Bengals fan.
