The Link Between Excess Body Weight and Cancer

June 10, 2017 By Pam Rezai Leave a Comment

We know that smoking is the leading cause of cancer deaths. But, did you know that if the trend continues, obesity and inactivity could surpass those numbers? A prominent doctor at the American Cancer Society, predicts that this could very well be the case. With the decrease in the smoking rate, coupled with an increase in the number of obese Americans, it is very likely to happen. In fact, a 2016 study in the New England Journal of Medicine linked excess body weight to 13 types of cancer. Are Americans not aware of this health risk, as the obesity rate has tripled since the early 70s.

We have seen countless healthy lifestyle campaigns from the likes of McDonald’s (“it’s what I eat and what I do…I’m lovin’ it”), the NFL (Fuel Up to Play 60), and even the White House (Let’s Move!). But is anyone really listening? Or, is it simply easier to stay with what is fast and convenient? Are we willing to sacrifice the health of our children and ourselves for the sake of those who can sway us with advertising? Choosing to believe that cancer cannot happen to us or those we love? Deciding we can put off for another day living a healthier lifestyle?

The truth can hurt, not in the literal sense. It can force us to look inside and ask ourselves some very difficult questions. Revealing insecurities, fears, and personal failings. Who wants to really do any of that? It takes courage and discipline to improve oneself. It can also require a lot of hard work and time. Reaping the rewards of a healthy lifestyle does not happen overnight. This can be very frustrating especially as society has conditioned us for immediate gratification with social media, cell phones, and fast food. Living a healthy lifestyle means going against the grain. Doing what a majority of people are not. But, it can be done. And deep down we know it.

The first step is awareness.

Attitude Affects Treatment Success

June 16, 2016 By Pam Rezai Leave a Comment

attitude

You’ll hear coaches, teachers, and parents tell kids that their attitude will determine how successful they are in any endeavor. That self-defeating thoughts will undermine their efforts to do well. The same can be said with our health. Our attitude about weight loss, chronic pain, or stress levels can significantly impact how successful we are.

Most who initially seek chiropractic care are looking to resolve their pain. And while pain can be extremely motivating, the success of treatment is contingent on the patient’s attitude going in. Why? Well for the same reason as the examples listed in the paragraph above. If the patient is only interested in pain relief, then what are the chances that they will take steps to ensure it does not return? A patient’s attitude about their health and wellness is the cornerstone of healthy aging. Still two patients with the same injury and pain level can have different outcomes. For example, one can feel better after a week and the other need to pursue a surgery option.

There have been studies as to why there is a difference in how patients respond to chiropractic treatment. These studies have found that there are three key factors involved in success:

  • Improving the flexibility of the spine.
  • Increasing the movement of the smaller muscles around the spine.
  • Increasing the water content of the spinal discs.

The goal of chiropractic care is all three with every patient, but the range of flexibility, movement and water content varies from person to person. Depending on the person’s lifestyle one person can be further behind another when presenting the same injury and pain. The bottom line is giving your body the solid foundation it needs to thrive. Not doing so only prolongs healing. It also can mean the return of pain if steps are not taken to improve one’s lifestyle, including weight, stress, sleep, etc. Understanding that pain-relief can be quick, but temporary, if treatment is looked at with the wrong attitude.

Wellness Is An Inside Job

April 1, 2016 By Pam Rezai

ruby slippers

Remember the scene in the movie “The Wizard of Oz” when Glenda the Good Witch tells Dorothy that she always had the power to go home? That the power never was in the ruby slippers that she was wearing throughout the movie. That was a powerful statement made by Glenda, and it truly shocked Dorothy when she heard those words. All along Dorothy thought the answer was somewhere to be found within the land of Oz, not as simple as something she had all along.

How many times have we done something similar to Dorothy when it comes to how we treat our health and wellness? We buy into the latest trends, buy the books, the products, the memberships. We search for answers to our healthcare challenge outside of ourselves whether it’s to lose weight or simply get in better shape. The reality is that all along the answer really resided within us. We didn’t need all that “extra stuff” to get where we needed to go. Sometimes the answer is in plain sight, and because it is so obvious we can’t see it.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is a choice. The first step is acknowledging that we alone have the power to transform our lives for the better. It begins with a commitment to ourselves to make decisions each and every day that align with a healthy lifestyle. We might need a little help along the way too, just like Dorothy with the Lion, the Tin Man, and the Scarecrow. It may have been quite some time since we’ve exercised, so we don’t even know where to begin. We may not really know how to prepare healthy meals. That’s okay. Finding a place that focuses on wellness care versus disease care is a good starting point. Think of it like those ruby slippers. You need to actually put your feet into those slippers first. Just like you need to take that first step towards your wellness goals. No one has the power but you. No one.

Disease Care

March 29, 2016 By Pam Rezai

Think about the times when we would go to see a doctor? We are feeling sick, we’ve injured ourselves, we aren’t getting better, we are experiencing pain, we found something suspicious on our skin, the list could go on and on. Essentially, we visit a doctor to treat a problem, for disease care.

In the chiropractic field, the opposite is the case. These doctors are in the business of health care. Working to ensure that their patients stay healthy and well versus only coming in when there is a problem. This approach is proactive and requires a different perspective, similar to a healthy lifestyle. Living a healthy lifestyle means making choices every day that align themselves with that mentality. Exercising several times each week. Eating fruits and vegetables every day. Skipping the fast food and opting for cooking at home. Drinking plenty of water versus carbonated drinks. Taking the stairs instead of the elevator at work. We have decided that maintaining good health is a priority and will take the steps necessary to ensure that it stays that way.

The best case scenario is to have a family chiropractor, just like you would have a family dentist, an optometrist, or orthodontist. A chiropractor is someone you and your family visit regularly for preventative disease care. This type of care is proactive not reactive. Think about the condition of our car if we chose to maintain it only when we had a problem. Never got the oil changed, rotated the tires or filled them with the correct amount of air. Never refilled the washer fluid or replaced the wiper blades. Never got the car washed of all the salt from winter. How good do you think our car would run over time? Would we significantly shorten its the life of the car? This is the approach of disease care. Why would we treat our bodies any differently than we do to properly maintain our car?

Remember to think about your health and wellness as something to be maintained, as a lifestyle, not something to tend to only when there is a problem. Say goodbye to disease care.

Life Choices

February 18, 2016 By Pam Rezai

life_choices

Have you ever heard the saying “Nothing ever comes to one, that is worth having, except as the result of hard work” by Booker T. Washington, the famous educator, author and advisor to U.S. Presidents Roosevelt and Taft? Essentially it means that it requires discipline and willpower to have the better things in life. You might ask what those better things are. Well, let’s look at good health and fitness. Individuals that are in great shape have invested the time and effort into themselves to be that way. It meant sacrificing a snooze on the couch for a workout, skipping that late night snack of a bowl of ice cream and eating instead a handful of almonds, or taking the stairs at work versus the elevator every day.

There was an interesting picture on Facebook the other day. It showed two images of women that were the same age, in their 70s. One image, the woman pictured was in fantastic shape. In fact, she was actually wearing a bikini! In the other picture, the same aged woman was in a wheel chair. She looked tired, out of shape, and not particularly happy. The caption at the bottom asked “Which one would you like to be?” I would venture to guess that every single one of us would pick the younger looking version of the two, the one in the bikini. But what created the difference between the two women? Hard work. One made a series of life choices that added up to a healthy lifestyle and a higher quality of life. The other? Well, other life circumstances may have led to the wheelchair, but the fundamental message is the same. It takes a daily commitment to oneself to achieve more in life.

Wellness is a state of mind, but also a lifestyle as well. And while it may be difficult at times to sustain, the end result will definitely be worth it.

Wellness Speed Bumps

February 10, 2016 By Pam Rezai

Speed Bump Road Sign

In an ideal world, events would go as planned, the sun would always shine, and our favorite team would always win. There would be no obstacles in our way. Ever. Unfortunately, we all know that isn’t reality. In the real world, there are ups and downs. Days we wish would never end and days we wish would end already. Likewise with our health, our intentions to work out, eat right, reduce stress, and sleep more may always be our goal, but there inevitably comes a time when we experience those wellness speed bumps.

Think of it as one of those speed bumps you come across in a parking lot or residential area. As annoying as it might be, there is a reason for its presence. It’s telling us to slow down, watch for children, beware of other vehicles. The bumps we experience on our path to wellness are there for a reason as well.

You might be thinking, “what exactly is a speed bump that I might experience on my quest for a healthier life?” Well, a great example falls about 6 weeks after the new year. Six weeks after we state our New Year’s resolutions. We get to a point where our motivation dwindles, we let excuses hinder our progress, or we simply get tired. That would be a wellness speed bump.

When this happens, acknowledge it. Don’t deny the shift in yourself. Maybe this speed bump is telling you that you need to recharge for a day or two. Maybe it means it’s time to mix things up a bit and pamper yourself as a reward for the progress you have made. Maybe it’s just trying to remind you that you are not a robot. Programmed to go through the motions without feeling anything. Either way, there is a message. Listen to what your body is telling you and honor it. Taking a break doesn’t mean you have given up. It only means you need some time to refocus on your goals once again. It happens to everyone. Don’t beat yourself up for being human. The path to a better life is filled with speed bumps. Learning to expect and respect them will help ensure you stay true to your wellness goals.

Change

January 22, 2016 By Pam Rezai

10-Hardest-Life-Fish-Bowl

There are many lessons in life to learn. Some we learn very early in life. How many times did we need to touch a hot surface to know not to touch it again? Chances are just once. Some lessons in life that take a bit longer to learn. The reasons could range from sheer stubbornness, ignorance, luck, or disinterest. Still, there comes a time when we realize that learning the lesson is inevitable. When we are ready and willing to learn and grow from our mistakes. And while the message may not be new to us, we finally actually hear it. It somehow resonates deep within us. It compels us to change.

Finally hearing what has been told to us countless times really comes down to the messenger and where we are at with our life. Why do we shut down as adolescents when our parents dispense advice but then absorb every word when a good friend says the same thing? Our parents may have more wisdom, but we hear what our friend says.

Most, if not all, of us have learned what it means to live a healthy lifestyle, even it we are not living it right now. We may have seen countless advertisements, commercials, books, videos, articles, all with the same core message. If a majority of our society is overweight or obese then we have to wonder who’s hearing the message. However, there usually comes a tipping point in everyone’s life where they do finally hear the message regarding living a better life. Perhaps it was a success story from someone we know or a personal connection we made with a new acquaintance. What changed? We did.

Being ready for change is a process. While we might have always known it at a certain level we just weren’t open to it. Don’t be frustrated if you’re still waiting for that tipping point, for that compelling feeling to change. If you are reading this, you are in the process of getting ready for change. Be patient with yourself. One day you will wake up and know you are ready to play an active role in your quest to live a healthier lifestyle.

Lowering Blood Pressure Through Adjustments

October 29, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

The more we age, the more we hear certain words:

  • cholesterol
  • blood pressure
  • weight
  • diabetes

If we age well, these words cause us no concern.  If we don’t, we go on high alert, monitoring our sugar levels, our weight, and food intake. Healthy aging really requires a team effort. While there are countless steps we can take ourselves to promote healthy aging, like eating a balanced diet and staying active, having the support of a team of healthcare professionals to keep you on the right path is helpful. Research is continuing to suggest that chiropractic adjustments have blood pressure lowering benefits. This is yet another significant advantage to adding a chiropractor to your healthcare team.

One of the keys to healthy aging is minimizing our dependence on pharmaceuticals. The reason? Pharmaceuticals simply mask the root of the problem. Granted, if we have high blood pressure and take a blood pressure lowering drug, we will lower our blood pressure. But why was our blood pressure high to begin with? What are the side effects of taking a particular pharmaceutical? How much do these side effects negatively impact our lives? If we make no other changes to our lifestyle other than taking a pill each day have we really addressed the root cause? No, we have not. It’s true that when a doctor prescribes a particular medicine, like one for lowering blood pressure, that there is also the expectation that the patient will also take other steps to improve their overall health. Steps like eating a healthy diet and exercising. However, the reality is that we have a safety net in place with the prescription medication. Even if we aren’t making the best decisions each day to encourage a healthy lifestyle, the medication will pick up the slack.

The reality is that prescription medications should be viewed as a temporary bridge between where we are and where we want to go. If we can avoid it, they should never become a permanent fixture in our lives. Rather, we should take the steps necessary to improve our lives to the point where we no longer need medications like those to lower our blood pressure. Adding a chiropractor to your healthcare team can be a pivotal step in getting you where you want to go in terms of better health. Lowering blood pressure and pulse rate through chiropractic adjustments are just one of the countless health benefits to chiropractic care.

Continue to increase your arsenal of resources to promote your healthy aging. Not only for you, but for those you love as well.

Our Body the Fortress

August 25, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

Back in medieval times, the castle served many purposes. Not only did it house the royal family, but it served as a focal point for the people. Healthy aging is similar to the effort required to protect the castle and its inhabitants. And treating our body as we would a fortress helps to make better choices every day.

So what role did the castle play for the people who lived during this time period? Besides providing a sanctuary for the king and queen, nobles resided there as well. The king held court with his trusted advisors and met with dignitaries from other countries. For the common people the exchange of goods took place inside its walls, people shopped for food and supplies, there was entertainment with music and acting, plus it offered protection from invaders. The castle was surrounded by high walls and a moat. Entering the castle meant going through the open drawbridge. The castle was a fortress but also the hub of daily life.

Our body is also that hub of life. It is also a fortress that is to be protected from invasion, but the enemy is disease and chronic conditions. If a castle is not properly maintained and protected, inevitably invaders will gain entry. It may not be through the drawbridge either. Holes in the walls of the fortress allow entry as do unprotected walls and passageways. Undesirables are merely biding their time, waiting for a lax in security to make their move and enter unnoticed.

Choosing to look at our body in the same way as a fortress is enlightening. Germs, bacteria and viruses are those undesirables biding their time, looking for an opportunity to invade. It is up to us to create those barriers, plus give our body the daily maintenance it needs to stay well. It allows us to be on the offense rather than the defense. One or two preventative measures can save us the trouble of recovering from illness which affects our family, work, and social life. But there is another side to this. One that doesn’t mean picking up a bug and recovering after a few days.

Subjecting our body to a daily barrage of arsenal, from:

  • eating a poor diet
  • lack of physical activity
  • insufficient sleep
  • smoking
  • excessive alcohol consumption
  • extra body fat

Over time, this lifestyle erodes the natural protection our body has. Similar to a castle in the midst of battle. With each round of attack, the walls surrounding the castle become damaged. How long can the castle defenses withstand the impact? How long can our body withstand the impact of a damaging lifestyle? Fortunately, there are signs of deterioration, alerting us to a potential of a larger problem. It could be weight gain, chronic exhaustion, high cholesterol, or type 2 diabetes. This is our body’s means of communicating that there is a war going on inside of us and the walls of protection are deteriorating.

Protect the only fortress you have. Take the extra steps of preventative care to ensure your quality of life, because healthy aging is not a guarantee for any of us. Chiropractic care is an effective way to remain on the offense to keep those invaders at bay. Stay vigilante and align yourself with those who will help to keep you well.

Choosing Your Chiropractor

August 7, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

chiro-7g-14-slider-1

Choosing a Chiropractor is not unlike choosing any other healthcare professional.  It’s a very personal relationship where you truly feel he or she has your best interests at heart.  But there are other things to consider as well because you are essentially advocating for yourself.  Good health is our greatest asset and it should never be taken for granted.  It needs to be earned through daily effort.  Partnering with a Chiropractor can help you achieve and maintain this asset throughout your life.  The key, however, is making sure you chose wisely.

There are many false stereotypes regarding Chiropractors, just as there are for other professions such as lawyers and politicians.  Common sense tells us that we mustn’t judge a book by its cover, but that’s exactly what we do.  We take hearsay and turn it into fact without investing the time to find out for ourselves the truth.  The end result?  Lost opportunity to benefit from the care and expertise from a committed professional.  Rushing to a snap judgement means we’d rather follow what another says.  Relying on unsubstantiated claims can have a negative impact on our lives.  Take, for example, the marketing of several consumer goods over the decades:  Tab, Olestra, nicotine, aspartame, MSG, and GMOs.  We took for granted that because it was available, it was good for us.  Years later we learned we were wrong.

Chiropractors are doctors that specialize in the musculoskeletal and nervous systems.  They practice a drug-free, hands-on approach to healthcare.  With broad diagnostic skills, they are trained to recommend therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises, in addition to nutritional, dietary, and lifestyle counseling.  They are also best known for providing spinal adjustments to help restore joint mobility that causes inflammation and pain.

But what other services does a chiropractor provide?

  • Diagnostic imaging
  • Nutritional supplements
  • Clinical examinations
  • Patient education
  • Electrical muscle stimulation
  • Transcutaneous electrical muscle stimulators (TENS)
  • Heat and ice therapy

However, did you know that there are also other value-added services that you should be looking for when choosing your chiropractor?  Here are a few questions to consider as you explore your options:

  • Is massage incorporated with treatment?
  • What about rehabilitation?
  • How much time does the Chiropractor spend with each patient?
  • How are patients educated on achieving and maintaining wellness?
  • Is decompression as part of the treatment options?

Other ways to educate yourself on the philosophies of a particular Chiropractor is to check social media.  Are there recent testimonials?  Pictures of the practice, the doctor, the other team members?  What about reviews?  What is the general feeling regarding the practice?

When it comes to your health, never settle.  A little homework can go a long way!

OUR TEAM

Dr. Andrew Damron, Chiropractor

Why ChiropracticProfessional Experience Personal Information
Dr. Damron established DCW because he was fed up with the current health model. Statistics continue to show an increase in pharmaceutical prescriptions to patients every day. Although he does believe some medications are necessary, he believes the majority of what is prescribed is actually harmful to the patient’s long-term health, creating another set of healthcare issues as a result. Dr. Damron believes DCW’s unique approach to achieving overall wellness will revolutionize the healthcare industry through collaborative care utilizing chiropractic, massage therapy, rehabilitation, and nutrition. The DCW focus addresses the whole person versus a only symptom and uncovers the root cause. He also believes that education is vital to sustaining a healthier more vibrant lifestyle as well. His goal is to create a healthier society and a better place for our children to live.
Dr. Damron began his medical career with a Biology Degree from Wright State University in 2002. He went on to receive his Doctorate of Chiropractic from the prestigious Palmer College of Chiropractic in Port Orange, Florida in 2007. While attending Palmer, he had the opportunity to travel abroad to Madagascar and provide chiropractic care to the native Malagasy people. Dr. Damron has continued his post-graduate studies with a focus on nutrition, rehabilitation, and functional medicine.
Dr. Damron and his wife, Kristy, reside in West Chester with their two young children, Graden and Isabelle. An avid Buckeye fan, Dr. Damron enjoys playing the guitar in a band with his college friends, watching/playing any sport, cooking, reading, and attending concerts, especially the Dave Matthews Band and Foo Fighters.

Dr. Greg Washam, Chiropractor

Why ChiropracticProfessional Experience Personal Information
Dr. Washam was introduced to Chiropractic by his mother at the age of 16. She was working for a Chiropractor at the time, experiencing all the benefits that Chiropractic care had to offer, and thus began taking Dr. Washam and his siblings in for regular adjustments. Dr. Washam had been experiencing painful bouts of Strep Throat from the age of 8, which always included a 10 day course of antibiotics. While under Chiropractic care his doctor convinced him to avoid the antibiotics and receive Chiropractic adjustments instead. To his amazement, Dr. Washam’s strep throat symptoms had vanished within three days and he never had an issue from that point forward. He was so astounded by his experience that he fell in love with Chiropractic and decided that was the path for him. He wanted to commit his life to helping people through the power of Chiropractic, just as it had helped him.
Dr. Greg Washam began his college education at the University of Cincinnati, studying biology. After he made the decision to become a Chiropractor, he attended Logan College of Chiropractic in St. Louis, MO. While at Logan, he received his Bachelor of Science in Biology and Life Sciences in 2009. He received his Doctorate of Chiropractic in 2011. Dr. Washam was presented with various awards upon graduation. These included Dean’s List honors, the Senior Intern Assistant Award, and the Award of Excellence from the Division of Research. He has completed many hours of post graduate education focusing on nutrition, supplementation and injury recovery.
Dr. Washam and his wife Kassie reside in Mason, Oh with their two daughters, Lillian and Wren. In his free time, Dr. Washam enjoys cooking, exploring new restaurants, touring local craft breweries and reading. He also spends a great deal of time outdoors with his family and his Beagle, Willow. Brooke Snyder, Operations Manager

Why DCWProfessional Experience Personal Information
Brooke had never been to a medical office where she really felt like they cared more about her than her money until she came to DCW as a patient. Because of her experience as a patient at DCW she realized she wanted to pursue a career within it. She saw everything she wanted in healthcare at DCW. Finally, a place where patient care really comes first! She comes to DCW with a degree in Nursing and a background in finance. When someone asks her “Why DCW?” she cannot think of one reason why not.

Nicole Foreman, Licensed Massage Therapist

Why MassageProfessional Experience Personal Information
Nicole always wanted a career that was focused on helping people. It wasn’t until she drove past the Dayton School of Medical Massage on a daily basis that it became clear what she was meant to do. She enrolled as soon as she could and it has been the best decision she has ever made. She loves the feeling of knowing she has alleviated someone’s pain and possibly made their day better in some way. She had been working alongside chiropractors for over 7 years before joining the DCW team. Before DCW she never really felt her opinions and insights were valued or even asked for, which she felt hindered patient care and the effectiveness of each treatment. At DCW she feels valued and part of a practice that is focused on changing the approach of wellness with cohesive and effective patient care.
Nicole is a graduate of the Dayton School of Medical Massage and obtained her license in 2008. She utilizes Deep Tissue, Swedish and Thai massage techniques to relieve pain, tension, and stress while increasing range of motion and flexibility.
Nicole is married to her husband of 5 years and they one daughter, Rylee, and one child on the way due in September 2016. As a family they enjoy camping, hiking and spending time at the lake during the summer.

Erika Pantona, Insurance Specialist

Why DCWProfessional Experience Personal Information
Erika started coming to DCW in 2010 after spending two years in substantial pain after an injury. She had spent those two years at various specialists and taking medications to simply get up in the morning due to the pain. She was 18 when she found herself facing a major, life altering surgery (SI Fusion) and realized there must be another way. When she began her treatment plan at DCW she started to have days with little or no pain. She stopped taking her medications and realized they had been affecting her overall mood. In 2015 Erika joined the DCW team because they allowed her to live her life once again. She wants to prevent others from living in pain like she did unnecessarily, and to receive the benefits of chiropractic care.
Erika is well versed in the insurance industry with her previous employment at Express Scripts and Anthem.
Erika has two siblings and resides in Liberty Township. In her spare time she enjoys traveling and hiking with her family.

Amy Faris, Patient Care Coordinator

Why DCWProfessional Experience Personal Information
After moving to Ohio in 2010, I was in need of some relief from minor pain associated with working in customer service fields for 15 years. I was interested in seeking alternative forms of therapy and found a chiropractor in our small town. After going for a few visits, the therapy seemed somewhat outdated compared to what I had researched. In talking with my husband, he remembered that he knew someone who was a chiropractor. After just a few visits with Dr. Damron, I definitely noticed a difference in his techniques and style. It was nice to see results and feel like I was being listened to as a patient, not just heard…something you don’t always feel with doctors. After being a patient for several years, the opportunity came about to join the DCW team. It would be something different from what I had done in my past, however I knew my passion for working with people would translate well into helping patients receive the best care possible. I believed in the mission of DCW as a patient, and I am excited to be part of living that mission every day.
I am originally from St. Louis, MO. I graduated from the University of Missouri – Columbia with a degree in Secondary Education – Language Arts. I worked in restaurant/catering management for several years before starting a career in retail management and training.
In that position, I met my husband, Matt, who is from Wilmington, OH. After we got married in 2010, I moved to Wilmington. Realizing retail wasn’t where my heart was any longer, I began working as a substitute teacher in the Clinton County area. Matt and I live in Wilmington with our 6 year old German Shepard, Dale. I enjoy camping, boating, riding 4-wheelers, and spending time with family and friends. I love St. Louis Cardinals baseball and am a recently converted Cincinnati Bengals fan.
