The Lumbar Spine

May 12, 2016 By Pam Rezai Leave a Comment

Did you know that the lumbar spine supports the most weight? With only five vertebrae, the lumbar spine is built for both power and flexibility. The word lumbar is derived from the Latin word “lumbus” which means lion. Considering the strength required of these five vertebrae, the name is certainly appropriate.

If we look at the areas of the body that are controlled by the nerves in the lumbar spine, we would see that it includes the large intestine, appendix, sex organs, uterus, bladder, legs, sciatic nerve, the muscles of the lower back, and abdomen. Because the lumbar spine bears the most weight, getting older means that this area of the spine is more susceptible to degradation and injury. It probably will not sound surprising to learn that the effort to lift objects is centralized in the lumbar spine, specifically between the L4 and L5 vertebrae and the L5 and first vertebrae in the adjacent part of the spine, the sacrum.

Once again, the symptoms that manifest themselves with a lumbar spine irritation can, on the surface, appear unrelated to the spine at all. Many people would not correlate pain in their bladder with an irritated or inflamed L3 lumbar disc. We could assume it was a bladder infection and go get a UTI test and possibly antibiotics. If there really is a vertebrae problem the UTI test would come back negative. Still, many still do not make the connection to the spine in a situation such as this. Why? Because modern Western medicine has trained us to simply address the symptoms, not the root cause of the symptoms.

From 2004-2012 there was a television series called “House, M.D.” It was a great show that starred a highly intelligent, yet highly unlikable doctor who specialized in medical cases that appeared, on the surface, as untreatable. He looked at each patient he saw as a puzzle that he must solve. He was relentless in his pursuit for a cure. He saw that every part of the body was interconnected. That the symptoms could be traced back to the root, or cause. We need to look at our body in the same way. Understanding and appreciating the language of our body can save us. It can save us time, money, and worry. Whenever you have pain or an unexplained symptom, don’t think symptom relief, think chiropractor.

The Thoracic Spine

May 11, 2016 By Pam Rezai Leave a Comment

The thoracic spine in the human body contains the most number of vertebrae, twelve to be exact. It comprises the upper and middle back and serves primarily as a source of stability and protection of the vital organs. The thoracic spine is the least flexible as all but two of the vertebrae connect directly to the ribs and sternum. The remaining two, T11 and T12, do not connect to the sternum but still provide protection to the kidneys. Because there are twelve vertebrae there are many areas of the body that is controlled by the nerves in the thoracic spine, and as such, a variety of symptoms that can present themselves if there is a problem.

Think about all that is contained within your rib cage. Your heart, lungs, stomach, pancreas, liver, gallbladder, spleen and adrenal glands. If there is an irritation to one of the vertebrae because of an injury or a misalignment due to excessive wear and tear, a symptom can appear that seems unrelated. If you are unfamiliar with chiropractic care, would you know that acne, allergies, shortness of breath, or chronic tiredness could be symptoms of an irritation in the nerves of T11, T9, T1 or T10 respectively? Not knowing the correlation could mean we take unnecessary prescription medications, suffer needlessly, or drink too much caffeine simply to get through the day. But have we really addressed the underlying problem? No.

So, is it any wonder that only 20% of the population has seen a chiropractor? That is a small percentage who understand the correlation between the spine and the rest of the body. That is a small percentage who have looked past the symptoms to uncover the true cause. The good news is that knowledge is power. Power to positively impact your health. Power to positively impact your finances by avoiding unnecessary doctor visits that will only cover the symptoms not the root of the problem like a Chiropractor does.

Irritation or an injury with the nerves in the thoracic spine can cause symptoms such as:

  • asthma
  • pain in the lower arms and hands
  • bronchitis
  • pneumonia
  • jaundice
  • shingles
  • ulcers
  • hives
  • heartburn
  • eczema
  • gas pains

There is always an answer to pain and discomfort. It is how your body “talks” to you and tells you that something is amiss. Always listen to what it has to say.

The Truth About Chiropractic Care

April 22, 2016 By Pam Rezai

There exists an old misconception about those in the chiropractic field that seems to date back to the earlier days of this profession. This misconception is very similar to other professions such as used car salesmen and lawyers. When we think of a used car salesman a particular image may come to mind, and one that is not very flattering. The same can be said of lawyers, too. Does an ambulance chaser come to mind? However, one could argue that not all used car salesmen nor all lawyers are like that. In fact, one could also argue that they know of many individuals who are reputable and professional in each field. They know lawyers who have brought justice to those who deserve it the most. They know men and women who work hard to provide a previously owned vehicle to a family at the best possible price. Does one bad apple taint the field for the rest?

In the field of chiropractic, one of the biggest misconceptions is that once you start to see a chiropractor you need to see one for the rest of your life. That treatment never ends. This must be how urban legends begin, because under layers of falsehoods there exists a kernel of truth but it has been so misconstrued that even the truth is difficult to believe. So what is the truth as it relates to achieving wellness through chiropractic care?

Typically, people visit a chiropractor when they have an injury or are in pain. At that time a particular treatment plan is prescribed. At DCW that treatment plan includes not only the specialized care of the chiropractor but also the collaborative care of both the massage therapist and rehabilitation specialist. The reason behind this approach is so the body can hold the alignment the chiropractor has performed. By massaging the muscle that is restricting the mobility of the spine and then strengthening those muscles with rehabilitation, the success of chiropractic is amplified. Once the 6 to 8 week treatment has been completed, patients are instructed to come back either once a month or only as needed. DCW patients learn how to recognize how their body feels when it is out of alignment. They are then in control of their care. They come in only when they feel it is needed, not for life.

The goal of Damron Chiropractic & Wellness is to provide the highest quality patient care so people can get back to living life on their terms, not the pain’s.

Car Accident Protocol

April 14, 2016 By Pam Rezai

The National Safety Council estimates that in 2015, 4.4 million people were injured on U.S. roads. This is a significant increase from prior years. In fact, “serious injuries,” which according to the NSC is defined as requiring medical attention, rose 30% from the same time period in 2014, and there was a 24% increase in the costs associated with these crashes. Costs can be anything from property damage, lost wages, and medical expenses. Many times the medical expenses can be significantly reduced if the right path is taken following a car accident, no matter how minor it is. To make things easier, we’ve created a “chiropractic car accident protocol” if you or someone you love experiences a car accident.

CAR ACCIDENT PROTOCOL

1. Seek the care of a licensed chiropractor 24-48 hours after your car accident.

2. If you do not have one, ask for a referral from a friend or Google “chiropractor” and look for one that has great reviews plus offers a special for new patients.

3. You may not experience symptoms up to two weeks after the accident, even if there was no damage done to your car. Your body absorbed the energy from the impact of that collision.

4. Remember, all passengers should be seen by a chiropractor. Even infants in car seats.

If you have a car accident and do not seek treatment you run the risk of developing degenerative disc disease, arthritis, or disc herniation later in life. The other thing you risk is your sanity. It can take sometimes two weeks for symptoms to manifest themselves. By that time something else may have happened in your life that you think is the cause of your symptoms, opening the door for a misdiagnosis, needless visits to specialists, increasing medical costs, pain, and frustration. We hear it all too often. Patients will say “Had I only known I would have seen a chiropractor first.”

Remember that your body will absorb the energy from the impact of any car accident. Much like a lightening rod, your spine will bear the brunt of the collision. And that spine has vertebrae that are connected to every part of your body. While you might feel pain in your shoulder, hip, or even bladder, the source needs to be found. Seeing a chiropractor first after a car accident saves you money, worry, potential pain and suffering, not to mention needless frustration. It will be worth it!

The Root of Pain

March 8, 2016 By Pam Rezai

A valuable lesson was learned recently about how even the most minor of car accidents can have a big impact on a person’s body. And the impact wasn’t even realized until almost 2 months later. Ironically, the M.D.s who were treating this particular person missed the root of the problem. Instead, they were more focused on treating the symptoms which merely put a band-aid on the problem. The root of the problem still existed and continued to cause pain. As an observer, watching someone suffer and not know the cause can make you feel helpless. So is trying to find a solution, yet only finding roadblocks. However, within 5 minutes of entering Damron Chiropractic & Wellness (DCW) a question was asked that changed everything and shed the light on the root cause of the pain.

This particular question was not asked by any of the other medical professionals seen since the inception of the pain. This question should have been asked by all, but wasn’t. The question?

“What happened 6-8 weeks ago around the time that this pain began?”

The answer given? “A minor car accident.” But when it was said, it was almost with disbelief that that incident could be in any way related to the pain the person was experiencing. The x-rays taken of the affected area revealed vertebrae compression. This area directly correlated with the pain. The solution was to begin spinal decompression to relieve the pressure at the base of the spine, adjustments, electrical stimulation, and dietary supplements for disc and connective tissue health. After one visit, the patient felt better than she had in weeks.

This minor car accident turned out to not be so minor after all. While there was almost no damage done to her vehicle as a result of the collision, her body still absorbed the force of the impact. It was this force that changed the structure of her body. While the change was also very minor, it was enough to affect the nerves in her spine and create the pain she was sporadically experiencing. Sometimes pain that lasted hours at a time, without any rhyme nor reason to its appearance. On the surface it appeared that the pain was caused by something entirely different.

The care received by a Chiropractor is truly unique in the healthcare field. It is within this specialty that cures are found without the use of medications or surgery. It is a holistic approach that utilizes the structure of the body to self-heal.

Imagine the difference in people’s lives if they chose the care of a Chiropractor first when experiencing pain and discomfort? There’s nothing worse than living in the dark, without answers as to what is causing you pain. A person’s quality of life simply starts to diminish.

Together, let’s continue to shine the light on the countless benefits of chiropractic care.

Pediatric Chiropractic Care

May 15, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

Many parents today look to chiropractic care as a complement the care their children receive from their pediatricians.   This is due in large part to the increase in chronic conditions like ear aches and sleeping problems.  A non-invasive, drug-free, and gentle approach, pediatric chiropractic care is not only effective but affordable as well. Recently, the American Chiropractic Association (ACA) has reported an 8.5% increase in pediatric chiropractic care since 1991 and this trend is expected to continue.

The spine and nervous system are the foundation to wellness in the chiropractic specialty.  From infancy to young adulthood, the connection between these two plays a central role in maintaining a high level of preventative care. Keeping the spine in alignment helps to prevent spinal dysfunction which can be attributed to conditions such as colic, reflux, allergic reactions, bed wetting, constipation, scoliosis, growing pains, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

As the body grows it puts additional stress on the spine.  In utero and during delivery, the baby’s spine experiences both confinement and pressure.  Chiropractic care is a means to offset the impact of birth on the baby.  By helping to eliminate disruptions in spinal development and misalignment, developmental delays in certain milestones like holding the head up, sitting up, and crawling can be avoided.  These developmental milestones rest on the health of not only the spine, but the cranium and nervous system as well.  It’s only by working in conjunction that these significant events can happen for a child.

During preschool and adolescence, sports injuries and accidents create acute conditions that can be successful treated by a chiropractor.  Many times the root of the problem lies in misalignment of the spine where nerves and muscles are affected too.  Behavioral issues have also been reported as improved with chiropractic care.  The International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) conducted an extensive survey documenting these results, in addition to improvements in sleep and stronger immune systems.

The ultimate goal in pediatric chiropractic care is prevention.  Keeping kids healthy, strong, and balanced during their developmental stages of life ensures their success – physically, emotionally, structurally, and functionally.

Foundation, Structure, and Function

April 29, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

There’s something unique you should know about Damron Chiropractic & Wellness – we utilize a team approach to every person that walks through our doors.  This team approach to wellness focuses on three parts of the body:  the foundation, the structure, and the function.  By addressing these three areas we ensure that we optimize every person’s visit and get them back to living a pain-free, active life.  We believe that by addressing the whole person the problem is truly corrected and less apt to reappear.

The Chiropractor’s role is to address the body’s structure, specifically the spine, when it is out of alignment.  This misalignment may or may not cause pain to a person, yet the body must compensate for the change in the “normal” structure of the spine.  Compensating means the muscles begin to reassign themselves to support this “new” structure which can be brought about by poor posture or an injury, for example.  Muscles that normally wouldn’t support the spine now need to.

For the Chiropractor’s spinal adjustment to have maximum benefit, it’s ideal that the muscles are in a relaxed state.  This is accomplished through massage.  By loosening the tense and restricted muscles through massage, the spine can be afforded greater mobility and shorten the journey to wellness. However, there is another step in this approach to help the body heal.  It involves reteaching the muscles to prevent the spine from resuming its former position.  That’s where strength training plays a vital role in this process.  Conditioning the muscles to function as they should helps to keep the spine functioning as it should.  Building the strength of the body helps to keep the body in a state of wellness because it can now do what it was designed to do.

Our bodies were created with each part serving the whole.  Every cell designed with a specific purpose in mind.  The lack of proper care causes a domino effect where the integrity of the whole is affected. Inflammation, excess weight, poor nutrition, inadequate sleep, medications, and lack of exercise all contribute to the decline of health and wellness.  Thoughtfully addressing the needs of the whole person, as a team, allows Damron Chiropractic and Wellness to stop the domino effect and begin to build a solid foundation from which to reach wellness.  We believe that meeting the body’s needs from a structure, foundation, and function perspective greatly enhances the overall well-being of the individual who’s seeking true wellness.

Arthritis

March 18, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

Arthritis use to be a word associated with the elderly.  We knew it was painful because of the reaction the person made when moving.  Unfortunately, arthritis is one of those health problems that can affect all ages.  In fact, according to the CDC, an estimated 52.5 million adults suffer from arthritis and 1 in 250 children under the age of 18 have been diagnosed.  But what is arthritis?  What causes it?  And what can be done to minimize symptoms so one can live an active, pain-free life?

Another word for arthritis is inflammation, specifically joint inflammation.  The knee is the most common spot for arthritis to develop but it can also occur is other parts of the body as well:

  • Spine
  • Neck
  • Back
  • Shoulders
  • Elbows
  • Wrists
  • Hands
  • Fingers
  • Hips
  • Ankles
  • Heels
  • Toes

In order to identify the causes, it’s important to understand the two main forms of arthritis – Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid.  Osteoarthritis is caused by the inflammation, breakdown, and the loss of cartilage in the joints.  It is the most common type of arthritis that progresses over time and is said by many – “has no cure.”  However, preventative steps can be taken to reduce the likelihood of its occurrence, or if you already suffer from it, steps can be taken to halt its progression.  Typically it affects people over the age of 40, especially women, but it can also develop in younger people, too, which is known as juvenile arthritis. The causes can be linked to poor diet, obesity, a prior injury or joint condition, muscular imbalance over time, family history, age, and your sex.

Rheumatoid arthritis is different in that it is an autoimmune disease which means the body’s immune system attacks the lining of the joint, also known as synovial membrane, causing it to become inflamed and swollen.  As the disease progresses it can cause painful deformity and immobility in an individual. According to the Arthritis Foundation, “nearly three times as many women have the disease as men.”  The risk factors for rheumatoid arthritis include a family history, age, and being a woman.  The reason it affects more women is due to a lower percentage of muscle mass, which continues to decline later in life, especially during and after childbirth and menopause.

The symptoms of both types of arthritis include stiffness, pain, redness, swelling, and decreased range of motion which can significantly affect quality of life.  And while there is no known cure, there are many steps a person can take to minimize symptoms:

  • Strength training
  • Weight loss
  • Exercise
  • Heating pads or ice packs
  • Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS)
  • Yoga or Tai Chi
  • Massage therapy

Life may throw us many curve balls.  We simply course-correct and continue on our journey living our best life – today.

The Spine’s Major Role

February 20, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

Did you know that the spine plays a major role in how our body operates?  One might think it’s the brain, but the truth is that the spine encompasses the main thoroughfare for the nervous system and each point along the column controls a specific aspect of our body’s function.

Our spine is comprised of 33 vertebrae – 7 cervical, 12 thoracic, 5 lumbar, 5 sacrum, and 4 coccyx. Based on their location, each has a corresponding letter and number assigned to it.  For example, C1 is the first vertebrae in the cervical section of the spine (also called the Axis), and is located just below the head.   Each and every vertebrae has specific responsibilities in terms of organ function and structure of the human body.  So, if we look at the lumbar section, say L5, we know that vertebrae is connected to the lower legs, ankles, and feet.  Problems in this area manifest itself in the form of poor circulation in the legs, swollen ankles, cold feet, leg cramps, or weakness in the legs, ankles, or arches.  What if we pick a vertebrae in the thoracic section like T6?  T6 controls the stomach and if there is a problem with that particular vertebrae the following symptoms can manifest themselves – indigestion, heartburn, or dyspepsia.  Every part of our body is intricately connected, so much so that we can literarily trace the problem back to the source, like a map.  And that is incredibly good news for us!

Doctors of Chiropractic (D.C.) focus their care on the function of the spine.  It is through this specialization that the Doctor is able to treat and correct those symptoms that appear, from swollen ankles to heartburn.  Extensive knowledge of the neuromuscular system creates a holistic path to care, one that deviates from modern day medicine.  This deviation stems from the lack of reliance on pharmaceuticals to address symptoms, but rather addresses the underlying cause.  When there is a problem with the spine, or vertebrae. a symptom like heartburn surfaces.  The problem can be the result of a pinched nerve, herniated disc or bulging disc in the spinal column.  This interference prevents the nerve impulses, or messages, from getting to their desired destination causing the symptom to appear.  If the root cause is not properly addressed the symptom will appear again and again and again.

This revolving door of problems can be resolved if properly addressed.  Continue to seek solutions until you feel the results.  Treat your body like a puzzle.  You cannot force a piece into a place it does not belong, likewise you cannot see the entire picture of wellness until each piece is in it’s proper place.

Decompressing Spinal Compression

February 11, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

The spine acts like a load bearing wall in a home, designed to support and distribute the weight of what it holds.  It also has the force of gravity bearing down on it, too – year after year.  If we couple that with our constant motion, performing our daily routines and exercises, it’s no wonder that our spine can eventually weaken and cause problems for us.

The spine is made up of vertebral discs that act as shock absorbers.  These discs are made up of two parts, a hard outer surface and a softer inner portion, which tends to resemble a jelly donut of all things. At birth, 80% of the disc is composed of water.  This hydration ensures that the spinal discs can function as they should.  However, we all know that life happens, and despite our best efforts staying well hydrated and accident-free isn’t always reality.  Over time, as the discs lose water they become stiffer, which is a catalyst for disc degeneration.  Disc degeneration limits the spines ability to adjust to compression from the weight it carries, affecting movement of our body.  In time, this can cause the spine to compress and squeeze the discs closer together, increasing the incidence of pain from either a bulging disc or a pinched nerve.

An effective, non-invasive way to treat this condition is through decompression.  Spinal Decompression Therapy is a treatment that relieves the pressure on the nerves that are being pinched, or compressed, and causing pain.  The treatment involves a person laying on a traction table and stretching the spine. This stretching, which alleviates the pain because the pressure is removed, allows the disc to begin the process of rehydrating and healing.  To be truly effective, an individual will have the therapy three times per week over the course of two to four weeks, with each session lasting approximately fifteen minutes.

It’s remarkable what the body can do if given the resources it needs to function as it should.

Erika Pantona, Insurance Specialist

Why DCWProfessional Experience Personal Information
Erika started coming to DCW in 2010 after spending two years in substantial pain after an injury. She had spent those two years at various specialists and taking medications to simply get up in the morning due to the pain. She was 18 when she found herself facing a major, life altering surgery (SI Fusion) and realized there must be another way. When she began her treatment plan at DCW she started to have days with little or no pain. She stopped taking her medications and realized they had been affecting her overall mood. In 2015 Erika joined the DCW team because they allowed her to live her life once again. She wants to prevent others from living in pain like she did unnecessarily, and to receive the benefits of chiropractic care.
Erika is well versed in the insurance industry with her previous employment at Express Scripts and Anthem.
Erika has two siblings and resides in Liberty Township. In her spare time she enjoys traveling and hiking with her family.

Amy Faris, Patient Care Coordinator

Why DCWProfessional Experience Personal Information
After moving to Ohio in 2010, I was in need of some relief from minor pain associated with working in customer service fields for 15 years. I was interested in seeking alternative forms of therapy and found a chiropractor in our small town. After going for a few visits, the therapy seemed somewhat outdated compared to what I had researched. In talking with my husband, he remembered that he knew someone who was a chiropractor. After just a few visits with Dr. Damron, I definitely noticed a difference in his techniques and style. It was nice to see results and feel like I was being listened to as a patient, not just heard…something you don’t always feel with doctors. After being a patient for several years, the opportunity came about to join the DCW team. It would be something different from what I had done in my past, however I knew my passion for working with people would translate well into helping patients receive the best care possible. I believed in the mission of DCW as a patient, and I am excited to be part of living that mission every day.
I am originally from St. Louis, MO. I graduated from the University of Missouri – Columbia with a degree in Secondary Education – Language Arts. I worked in restaurant/catering management for several years before starting a career in retail management and training.
In that position, I met my husband, Matt, who is from Wilmington, OH. After we got married in 2010, I moved to Wilmington. Realizing retail wasn’t where my heart was any longer, I began working as a substitute teacher in the Clinton County area. Matt and I live in Wilmington with our 6 year old German Shepard, Dale. I enjoy camping, boating, riding 4-wheelers, and spending time with family and friends. I love St. Louis Cardinals baseball and am a recently converted Cincinnati Bengals fan.
