Vertigo

March 12, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

Remember as a kid hopping onto that tire swing and your friends winding it around until it could go no further and then letting go?  You would spin and spin and spin – fast.  When the tire finally came to a stop, you would get off and drop to the ground because everything seemed to still be spinning around you even though it wasn’t.  Walking a straight line was literally impossible.  You’d have to close your eyes and lay in the grass until the dizziness subsided.  Summer fun at it’s best!

The older we get, the idea of getting on that tire swing and spinning can make us nauseous just to think about it.  But there are times in our life that we may get the sensation of whirling and loss of balance without the help of a tire swing.  The name for this condition is called vertigo and it “results from a sudden or temporary change in the activity of the balance structures in your inner ear (vestibular system) or in the balance structures’ connection to the brain. (Mayo Clinic 9/12)”  Defined by symptoms of lightheadedness, imbalance, dizziness or a sensation of movement when we are not, are common.

Vertigo can be caused by:

  • migraines
  • multiple sclerosis
  • head and neck trauma
  • calcium debris in the inner ear (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)
  • tight or spasmatic muscles in the neck
  • stress
  • adrenal fatigue or exhaustion
  • certain medications
  • food allergies
  • gluten sensitivity
  • diabetes mellitus
  • hypothyroidism
  • hypoglycemia
  • whiplash
  • Meniere’s Disease

Depending on the cause, the duration can last moments to weeks.  Fortunately, our body has the ability to adapt to what is causing the vertigo and balance is once again restored.  The important thing to note is that many cases of vertigo do not require the use of medication to correct it.  In fact, the course of treatment can involve specific exercises, dietary changes, spinal manipulation, lifestyle changes, stretching, and strength training.  If you ever do experience vertigo during the course of your life, you can feel at ease that it can be temporary and can be corrected.  If it is a reoccurring issue, getting evaluated can mean the difference between living with the condition, or figuring out the cause and having it never come back.  Having the knowledge is not only empowering, but it also saves you from worry and anxiety.

Here’s to keeping you informed and well.

Chronic Pain

March 6, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), chronic pain is defined as “any pain lasting more than 12 weeks.”  It affects 100 million people and can range from mild, excruciating, episodic or continuous, and simply be an inconvenience or totally incapacitate a person.  The effects of chronic pain can take both a physical and an emotional toll.

But where does chronic pain come from?  What causes it?  Some of the most common sources are:

  • Headaches
  • Joint pain
  • Injury
  • Backaches
  • Tendinitis
  • Sinuses
  • Carpel Tunnel Syndrome

Chronic pain can weigh heavily on a person emotionally, causing anxiety, depression, anger, and stress.  Studies indicate a correlation between emotional well being and the body’s ability to fight infection.  Individuals who suffer from chronic pain are in a relentless cycle from which it is difficult to emerge from.

Fortunately, there are options for sufferers of chronic pain, and surprisingly, many of these options are more holistic and proactive than traditional medicinal remedies.  The goal is to uncover and address the source of the problem versus simply masking it.  Here are a few areas to explore if you, or someone you know, is suffering from chronic pain:

  • Anti-inflammatory plants and herbs – turmeric, green tea, ginger, rosemary, and willow bark
  • Fish oil- omega-3s for headaches, back pain, some
  • Vitamin D increase
  • Exercise – releasing endorphins through physical activity can provide pain relief as endorphins are the body’s natural pain reliever
  • Stretching – through massage or other exercises
  • Meditation
  • Spinal Decompression – through Chiropractic care
  • Spinal Manipulation

It’s important that the underlying cause of the pain is correctly identified so that the proper course of treatment can be prescribed.  A Chiropractor can work with both a Licensed Massage Therapist and a Rehabilitation Specialist to develop a plan to help a person get back to a pain-free life once again.  And while it might take some time to get there, it will be worth every step.

You can start today on your journey to wellness.  Don’t let pain rob you of one more moment.

Why the Need for Supplements?

March 4, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

When it comes to our nutrition, it’s easy to think that by eating whole foods – like organic fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and unprocessed dairy – that it will be enough to ensure our body receives the essential nutrients it  needs to stay well and thrive.  Unfortunately, we live in a time where our farming practices have left the soil significantly lacking in nutrients which feed the crops that in turn feed us.  Over-farming, pesticides, fertilizers, and other pollutants have contributed to this dilemma. While organic farming methods are certainly on the rise, as well as accessibility to organic produce, we still live in a society that fuels itself on convenience whether from fast food restaurants or processed foods.  It’s inevitable that, despite our best efforts, we have fallen prey to the convenience factor at some point in our life.

Dietary supplements have been around since the 1940’s when consumers began purchasing multi-vitamins.  Over the years, supplements have evolved into substances you can eat or drink; comprised of vitamins, minerals, herbs or other plants, amino acids, or parts of these substances; and widely available.  To help our body combat the deficiencies in our soil and food we can take supplements. However, it’s important to note that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not regulate the dietary supplement industry,  meaning they can be sold without research supporting the product’s claims.  So what can you do to ensure your body receives the high quality nutrients it needs to thrive?

Fortunately, there are reputable companies out there that produce dietary supplements that are supported by key research.  It’s even more significant because, despite not being regulated, these companies have invested tremendous resources to build trust and credibility to back up their product’s claims.  That speaks volumes.  At Damron Chiropractic & Wellness we choose to align ourselves with other trustworthy and credible companies, so when it comes to improving wellness through diet, we recommend Standard Process to our patients.  The major reason due to the extensive research this 85 year old company has invested in its products to be sure that those who use it have the best quality product possible.  We want to know that the lives we touch each and every day are provided with the most current and accurate information regarding optimal health.

Supplements are our allies that give our bodies the resources it needs to thrive.

8 Tips to Help You Get Fit This Spring

February 27, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

The first day of spring this year is March 20th – and based on the winter we have had many of us wish it would come even sooner.  This time of the year comes with a flurry of activity – spring cleaning, yard work, rounds of golf, the Reds Opening Day, and a new season of youth sports – like baseball, softball, track, and lacrosse.  This burst of activity usually means an influx of visits to local ER’s and Urgent Care Centers as people, in all their excitement, overdue it too soon and too fast.  Why?  Because people, both young and old, do not take the time necessary to prepare their bodies for this increase in physical activity.  Failure to plan means planning to fail, and beginning your spring with an injury is not what anyone wants.

Our goal with this blog post is to help reduce your chance of an injury due to overexertion or lack of a proper foundation.  We want to ensure that you and your family have a happy and healthy spring where everyone is active, fit, and well.  So here are 8 tips to help you get fit and avoid injury this spring:

  • “The 10% Rule” – One of the biggest causes of injury is due to increasing the intensity, duration, or type of activity too quickly.  To avoid this pitfall, fitness experts recommend the 10% Rule which sets a limit to your weekly training schedule.  Simply put, you should increase your activity no more than 10% per week.  For example, if you have been running 5 miles and want to increase to 10 miles, you would add a 1/2 mile to your 5 mile run that first week.
  • Schedule – Three times per week is the ideal when starting any exercise regiment or new physical activity.  Going overboard because of the warmer weather will significantly increase the likelihood of injury – stick to that schedule.
  • Proper Safety Gear – Spring is the perfect time to check the status of all the gear you use to exercise, whether you are a cyclist, runner, or tennis player.  Ensuring that the equipment is in no way compromised due to age or simple wear and tear can save you in the long run should you have an accident.
  • Hydration – With a majority of our body made up of water, it is imperative that we keep our body fully hydrated especially before, during, and after exercise.  Our daily consumption of water should be at least 13 cups for men and 9 cups for women, and more if we drink soda or coffee.
  • Stretching – Giving our body the time it needs to prepare for a workout is like taking the time to pack for a trip.  We wouldn’t think of just taking off without all the essentials we will need for our time away.  Stretching is the essential to a successful workout.
  • Team Up – Start looking for friends or co-workers who are interested in getting fit this spring and begin together.  Having work-out or fitness partners will keep you accountable and make it more fun.
  • Sunscreen – Being outdoors means more exposure to the harmful rays of the sun.  Make sure you have adequate coverage to protect you, like a hat and sunglasses, plus sunscreen for the other vulnerable areas of your body.
  • Music – Do some spring cleaning with your playlist of music.  Great tunes have an incredible ability to motivate us even more.

Are you ready to get fit this spring?

Range of Motion

February 25, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

“The range, measured in degrees of a circle, through which a joint can be extended or flexed.”

Everyone has a different range of motion for any given joint.  Take for example an Olympic gymnast.  Watching this Champion compete leaves you in awe of her extreme flexibility.  Someone without that level of training can appear quite limited in comparison with their range of motion. In reality, it is completely within that person’s normal range.

As we age, life circumstances have a tendency to affect our bodies, in ways that can significantly limit our mobility and overall movement.  But what exactly are these life circumstances that can affect our range of motion as we age?

  • Our overall flexibility and motion can be affected by muscle or fat mass.  An overabundance of either can limit how far we can extend an arm or leg, or even how far we can bend over to touch our toes.
  • The pain caused by injury will impact range of motion.  When the body experiences pain the muscles surrounding the injury/pain will contract reflexively to prevent further injury.  Examples include sprains, bruises, and dislocation.
  • When our body is afflicted by disease, like arthritis or bursitis, the joints are affected causing pain and, once again, a limited range of motion.
  • If muscles are not moved or stretched regularly they can become stiff and lack extensibility, which is flexibility and elasticity.  That is why it is recommended that you stretch properly before engaging in sports or certain exercises like jogging.
  • Scar tissue from surgery or injury can limit the movement of joints due to the loss of elasticity in the affected tissue.

Fortunately the body is an amazing machine that, if given the proper care, can rehabilitate itself.  While many of us will never be that Olympic gymnast, or any gymnast for that matter, we can achieve the ideal range of motion for our age and body type.  We needn’t limit ourselves due to contentment, ignorance, fear, or pain.  Working with the right team of healthcare professionals – like a chiropractor, massage therapist, and rehabilitation specialist – will help you work you way back to optimal motion and flexibility, so you can stay there.

Never settle for anything less.

The Spine’s Major Role

February 20, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

Did you know that the spine plays a major role in how our body operates?  One might think it’s the brain, but the truth is that the spine encompasses the main thoroughfare for the nervous system and each point along the column controls a specific aspect of our body’s function.

Our spine is comprised of 33 vertebrae – 7 cervical, 12 thoracic, 5 lumbar, 5 sacrum, and 4 coccyx. Based on their location, each has a corresponding letter and number assigned to it.  For example, C1 is the first vertebrae in the cervical section of the spine (also called the Axis), and is located just below the head.   Each and every vertebrae has specific responsibilities in terms of organ function and structure of the human body.  So, if we look at the lumbar section, say L5, we know that vertebrae is connected to the lower legs, ankles, and feet.  Problems in this area manifest itself in the form of poor circulation in the legs, swollen ankles, cold feet, leg cramps, or weakness in the legs, ankles, or arches.  What if we pick a vertebrae in the thoracic section like T6?  T6 controls the stomach and if there is a problem with that particular vertebrae the following symptoms can manifest themselves – indigestion, heartburn, or dyspepsia.  Every part of our body is intricately connected, so much so that we can literarily trace the problem back to the source, like a map.  And that is incredibly good news for us!

Doctors of Chiropractic (D.C.) focus their care on the function of the spine.  It is through this specialization that the Doctor is able to treat and correct those symptoms that appear, from swollen ankles to heartburn.  Extensive knowledge of the neuromuscular system creates a holistic path to care, one that deviates from modern day medicine.  This deviation stems from the lack of reliance on pharmaceuticals to address symptoms, but rather addresses the underlying cause.  When there is a problem with the spine, or vertebrae. a symptom like heartburn surfaces.  The problem can be the result of a pinched nerve, herniated disc or bulging disc in the spinal column.  This interference prevents the nerve impulses, or messages, from getting to their desired destination causing the symptom to appear.  If the root cause is not properly addressed the symptom will appear again and again and again.

This revolving door of problems can be resolved if properly addressed.  Continue to seek solutions until you feel the results.  Treat your body like a puzzle.  You cannot force a piece into a place it does not belong, likewise you cannot see the entire picture of wellness until each piece is in it’s proper place.

Functional Medicine

February 18, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

There is a big disconnect when it comes to healthcare and what is perceived to be available to people. But why this disconnect?  Why don’t more people actually know there can be a better solution to what ails them?  Quite simply, the reason for this disconnect is due to popularity.  What happens to receive the most visibility, press, and promotion wins every time.  Fortunately, with a little research one can find better and more reliable options when it comes to good health and wellness.

Kids today are raised in a much different society than older generations.  Social media dominates their source for information and means to connect with others.  Generations past chose the newspaper, handwritten letters, and the telephone.  They “Think Green” and recycle just about everything, quick to speak up if you accidentally throw something away that is recyclable.  Ten to twenty years ago, you were considered odd if you did recycle.  Today, organic is popular as is supporting local farmers and businesses.  A decade ago, we believed that what big business sold what was best for us.  Fortunately, we saw the “disconnect” and realized that there might just be a better way.

In terms of healthcare, functional medicine is gaining momentum and becoming more mainstream.  It is built on the premise that taking ownership of our health versus treating ailments symptomatically will improve it longterm.  According to the Institute of Function Medicine, functional medicine is defined as,

“A systems-oriented approach that engages both the patient and practitioner in a therapeutic partnership that addresses the underlying causes of diseases.”

This definition removes medication from the solution and instead utilizes alternative methods to cure ailments.  Granted, this is not to say that medicine does not have a place because it certainly does, especially in the treatment of infection, trauma, and acute diseases.  But what about the millions of people who suffer every day from chronic diseases for which medicine simply masks the symptoms?

Functional medicine offers a solution to chronic ailments like allergies, gastro-intestinal problems, inflammation, or structural imbalances.  Working in collaboration with a healthcare provider, such as a chiropractor, to help the body restore itself to the desired balance state is the goal.  It’s about taking time to uncover the root cause of a health problem, so that steps can be taken to remedy it and facilitate the healing process – naturally, if possible.  Our bodies are comprised of intricately woven systems – from digestive, neurological, muscular, and cardiovascular.  One system inevitably affects the other, especially if there is a deficiency.  Functional medicine allows our body to do what it was designed to do, heal itself – given the proper tools to do so.

Isn’t it time you allowed your body to function as it should?

What Do Symptoms Really Tell You?

February 13, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

“Experience Life,” a magazine published by Lifetime Fitness, is always full of informative articles on achieving optimal health and lifelong wellness.  In the most recent addition (January/February 2015), an article by Pilar Gerasimo, focused on minimizing symptom suppression in ways that support living a healthy life with little or no medical intervention.  There are several highlights from that feature piece that can help you to achieve your wellness goals.

In 2013, the Mayo Clinic published a report that said almost “70% of Americans are on at least one prescription drug, more than half take two, and 20% take five or more.”  The most common prescription drugs taken are used to treat depression, pain, acid reflux, infections, plus high cholesterol and blood pressure.  Interestingly, the reason these medications are prescribed to treat a condition that is dependent many times on a person’s lifestyle, and in no way addresses the root cause of their problem.

Medications mask the real problem, giving only temporary relief.  Like a revolving door, as symptoms present themselves medication is taken, then life continues on until, once again, the symptom presents itself.

The author, Pilar, goes on to say “We have been taught to think of a great many maladies (from dry eyes to social anxiety) as ‘diseases.'”  She acknowledges that this school of thinking brought to us by the pharmaceutical industry that makes a living helping us get “better.”

The article equated how we should handle our health problems with the way we handle burning something in the oven.  When the smoke alarm in our home goes off, we do everything we can to remedy the situation and stop the noise.  We would consider what went wrong in causing our dinner to burn, noting how to prevent it from happening the next time.  In the ideal world, we’d like to think that this is how we would handle our health problems that arise, but all too often that is not the case.  We are too quick to slap on a bandaid and carry on as we had been, knowing deep down that the problem still exists and future alarms of a burnt dinner will inevitably happen.

The good news is that there are ways you can change the outcome for the better:

  • Understand how resourceful your body really is in how it manifests symptoms, typically beginning with minor symptoms like fatigue or discomfort.  Listening to your body for the onset of symptoms can alleviate the impact of more serious ones later and allow the body to heal itself.
  • Recognize the connection between the different parts of your body.  In other words, a symptom in one place can indicate a problem in another.
  • Be your own advocate and always ask “why.”  Ask until you truly understand what is happening to you and what you can do about it.
  • Know the ins and outs of the medications you are currently taking and don’t assume anything.  Learn all the side-effects, including how they might affect your goal lifestyle of health and wellness.

Be your own advocate and start listening to you!

Decompressing Spinal Compression

February 11, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

The spine acts like a load bearing wall in a home, designed to support and distribute the weight of what it holds.  It also has the force of gravity bearing down on it, too – year after year.  If we couple that with our constant motion, performing our daily routines and exercises, it’s no wonder that our spine can eventually weaken and cause problems for us.

The spine is made up of vertebral discs that act as shock absorbers.  These discs are made up of two parts, a hard outer surface and a softer inner portion, which tends to resemble a jelly donut of all things. At birth, 80% of the disc is composed of water.  This hydration ensures that the spinal discs can function as they should.  However, we all know that life happens, and despite our best efforts staying well hydrated and accident-free isn’t always reality.  Over time, as the discs lose water they become stiffer, which is a catalyst for disc degeneration.  Disc degeneration limits the spines ability to adjust to compression from the weight it carries, affecting movement of our body.  In time, this can cause the spine to compress and squeeze the discs closer together, increasing the incidence of pain from either a bulging disc or a pinched nerve.

An effective, non-invasive way to treat this condition is through decompression.  Spinal Decompression Therapy is a treatment that relieves the pressure on the nerves that are being pinched, or compressed, and causing pain.  The treatment involves a person laying on a traction table and stretching the spine. This stretching, which alleviates the pain because the pressure is removed, allows the disc to begin the process of rehydrating and healing.  To be truly effective, an individual will have the therapy three times per week over the course of two to four weeks, with each session lasting approximately fifteen minutes.

It’s remarkable what the body can do if given the resources it needs to function as it should.

Whiplash

February 5, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

Not a day goes by that we don’t see someone involved in a car accident.  It could be something as minor as a parking lot mishap to a serious multi-car pile up on an expressway.  Motor vehicles, and the mechanisms inside it are designed to keep us safe from injury.  While we are fortunate to benefit from these lifesaving measures, there is still a price we pay for being involved in a car accident.

The impact of one vehicle hitting another is absorbed by not only the car itself, but by those who happen to be inside of it, regardless of the speed the car is traveling.  The person inside the vehicle is also thrust forward, backward, or side to side – especially their head which is not restrained by a seatbelt like the torso. This sudden, jarring motion, known as whiplash, causes havoc on the muscles and tendons in the neck as well as the rest of the body.

So how do you know you suffer from whiplash, especially after a minor car collision?  Here are some of the symptoms to look for…and remember, some may feel these issues immediately following an accident, while others may not feel the effects for days or weeks afterwards.

  • Neck pain
  • Headaches
  • Blurred vision
  • Dizziness
  • Shoulder pain
  • Arm pain
  • Lower back pain
  • Neck stiffness
  • Reduced range of motion in the neck
  • Tenderness

Left untreated, the effects of whiplash can cause long-term pain.  A Doctor of Chiropractic is specialized in the care of the musculoskeletal and the nervous systems, which a car accident tends to disrupt.

Scheduling a visit with a chiropractor at the onset of any of the above symptoms will help to heal the damage done to the body, minimize pain and discomfort, and prevent additional trauma.  In addition to spinal adjustments, your doctor will prescribe an exercise or stretching program, rehabilitation, and massage.  Listening to your body, yet remaining active, is key to recovery.  Your body will tell you if you’ve pushed it too far after suffering from whiplash.  It’s important, though, that you don’t let the pain immobilize you.

Building your strength every day will bring you back to wellness.

Nicole Foreman, Licensed Massage Therapist

Why MassageProfessional Experience Personal Information
Nicole always wanted a career that was focused on helping people. It wasn’t until she drove past the Dayton School of Medical Massage on a daily basis that it became clear what she was meant to do. She enrolled as soon as she could and it has been the best decision she has ever made. She loves the feeling of knowing she has alleviated someone’s pain and possibly made their day better in some way. She had been working alongside chiropractors for over 7 years before joining the DCW team. Before DCW she never really felt her opinions and insights were valued or even asked for, which she felt hindered patient care and the effectiveness of each treatment. At DCW she feels valued and part of a practice that is focused on changing the approach of wellness with cohesive and effective patient care.
Nicole is a graduate of the Dayton School of Medical Massage and obtained her license in 2008. She utilizes Deep Tissue, Swedish and Thai massage techniques to relieve pain, tension, and stress while increasing range of motion and flexibility.

Erika Pantona, Insurance Specialist

Why DCWProfessional Experience Personal Information
Erika started coming to DCW in 2010 after spending two years in substantial pain after an injury. She had spent those two years at various specialists and taking medications to simply get up in the morning due to the pain. She was 18 when she found herself facing a major, life altering surgery (SI Fusion) and realized there must be another way. When she began her treatment plan at DCW she started to have days with little or no pain. She stopped taking her medications and realized they had been affecting her overall mood. In 2015 Erika joined the DCW team because they allowed her to live her life once again. She wants to prevent others from living in pain like she did unnecessarily, and to receive the benefits of chiropractic care.
Erika is well versed in the insurance industry with her previous employment at Express Scripts and Anthem.
Erika has two siblings and resides in Liberty Township. In her spare time she enjoys traveling and hiking with her family.

Amy Faris, Patient Care Coordinator

Why DCWProfessional Experience Personal Information
After moving to Ohio in 2010, I was in need of some relief from minor pain associated with working in customer service fields for 15 years. I was interested in seeking alternative forms of therapy and found a chiropractor in our small town. After going for a few visits, the therapy seemed somewhat outdated compared to what I had researched. In talking with my husband, he remembered that he knew someone who was a chiropractor. After just a few visits with Dr. Damron, I definitely noticed a difference in his techniques and style. It was nice to see results and feel like I was being listened to as a patient, not just heard…something you don’t always feel with doctors. After being a patient for several years, the opportunity came about to join the DCW team. It would be something different from what I had done in my past, however I knew my passion for working with people would translate well into helping patients receive the best care possible. I believed in the mission of DCW as a patient, and I am excited to be part of living that mission every day.
I am originally from St. Louis, MO. I graduated from the University of Missouri – Columbia with a degree in Secondary Education – Language Arts. I worked in restaurant/catering management for several years before starting a career in retail management and training.
In that position, I met my husband, Matt, who is from Wilmington, OH. After we got married in 2010, I moved to Wilmington. Realizing retail wasn’t where my heart was any longer, I began working as a substitute teacher in the Clinton County area. Matt and I live in Wilmington with our 6 year old German Shepard, Dale. I enjoy camping, boating, riding 4-wheelers, and spending time with family and friends. I love St. Louis Cardinals baseball and am a recently converted Cincinnati Bengals fan.
