“No Pain, No Gain”

September 10, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

Watch any pro-athlete. Their bodies move with confidence and grace. There is no hesitation, only forward momentum. They seem to be in a zone where only they exist and the game at hand. The opponent could be anyone. It doesn’t matter, really. To get to that point in their life required a lot of time, effort, discipline, and desire. It meant overcoming countless obstacles – from injuries, restricting their diet, and pushing past the pain. In a nutshell, it meant without the pain and discomfort, there was no gain. Or “no pain, no gain.”

Anything worth having requires much the same drive as the pro-athlete. Whether it be getting that promotion at work, running your first 5K, or loosing 10 pounds. It requires a somewhat painful transition from our contentment and current lifestyle to something very different. It means replacing one way of doing things with another. This change can test our willpower and commitment to ourselves and our new goal. Do we stay late at work to put the finishing touches on our presentation, do we run on the treadmill instead because it’s raining outside, do we decline the tempting offer of dessert after dinner? Those small steps of “pain” take us closer to that big reward of “gain.” We cannot have one without the other, just like that pro-athlete.

When it comes to our health, that same philosophy applies. A sedentary lifestyle, convenience foods, and pharmaceutical solutions require little, if any, effort on our behalf. There is nothing that pushes us out of our comfort zone, no “pain.” So, what do we gain? Well, weight, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, aches, pains, and the list goes on. We have settled on less for ourselves.

Surrounding yourself with others who want a higher quality of life and better health is a great first step. People that are proactive vs reactive with wellness. People like the team at Damron Chiropractic & Wellness. This unique approach, led by a chiropractor and supported by massage therapists and a rehabilitation therapist, jointly moves you towards your goal of better health. Underlying problems are addressed at the root, there are no band-aids. Educating you on both the cause and effect provides a more thorough understanding and awareness. Being proactive means not waiting for a problem to arise, but avoiding it altogether.

Let the pain be the sort that is good for you. Let it bring you to a higher sense of wellness, so you can gain the lifestyle you deserve.

Identifying a Concussion

September 8, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

An injury to your brain can be deadly, especially because the injury is typically something you cannot physically see. The person experiencing the injury may not even know how extensive it is and may exhibit normal behaviors to those around them. This does not mean the injury is minimal or that the person is okay. In fact, of all injuries a person can sustain, one to the brain can be the most deadly because of its elusive nature. A brain injury, or concussion, happens when a person sustains a blow to the head, or suffers an injury that jars or shakes the brain inside the skull. Knowing the signs to look for after someone experiences this injury can mean the difference between life and death.

Football is a national past-time. We love it at all levels of play. Recently, there has been a lot of media coverage regarding the concussions sustained by NFL players and the debilitating side effects that have handicapped them for life. But, a concussion can happen at any age, and not just with football either. A fall on the ice, a collision with another player during a soccer game, a hit in the head with a lacrosse stick can all cause a concussion.

Surprisingly, only 10% of concussions actually result in loss of consciousness. If that’s the reality, what happens the other 90% of the time? To help you identify whether or not someone has suffered a concussion, here is a list of common symptoms:

  • headaches/migraines
  • visual problems
  • light sensitivity
  • noise sensitivity
  • nausea
  • dizziness
  • attention problems
  • trouble with memory
  • fogginess
  • fatigue
  • trouble sleeping
  • sleeping less than normal
  • sleeping more than normal
  • increased emotions
  • sadness
  • irritability
  • nervousness

To be safe, it’s always best to seek medical treatment with any head injury. And although a concussion is considered a “manageable injury” by healthcare professionals, the key is early detection and proper treatment.

Our Body the Fortress

August 25, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

Back in medieval times, the castle served many purposes. Not only did it house the royal family, but it served as a focal point for the people. Healthy aging is similar to the effort required to protect the castle and its inhabitants. And treating our body as we would a fortress helps to make better choices every day.

So what role did the castle play for the people who lived during this time period? Besides providing a sanctuary for the king and queen, nobles resided there as well. The king held court with his trusted advisors and met with dignitaries from other countries. For the common people the exchange of goods took place inside its walls, people shopped for food and supplies, there was entertainment with music and acting, plus it offered protection from invaders. The castle was surrounded by high walls and a moat. Entering the castle meant going through the open drawbridge. The castle was a fortress but also the hub of daily life.

Our body is also that hub of life. It is also a fortress that is to be protected from invasion, but the enemy is disease and chronic conditions. If a castle is not properly maintained and protected, inevitably invaders will gain entry. It may not be through the drawbridge either. Holes in the walls of the fortress allow entry as do unprotected walls and passageways. Undesirables are merely biding their time, waiting for a lax in security to make their move and enter unnoticed.

Choosing to look at our body in the same way as a fortress is enlightening. Germs, bacteria and viruses are those undesirables biding their time, looking for an opportunity to invade. It is up to us to create those barriers, plus give our body the daily maintenance it needs to stay well. It allows us to be on the offense rather than the defense. One or two preventative measures can save us the trouble of recovering from illness which affects our family, work, and social life. But there is another side to this. One that doesn’t mean picking up a bug and recovering after a few days.

Subjecting our body to a daily barrage of arsenal, from:

  • eating a poor diet
  • lack of physical activity
  • insufficient sleep
  • smoking
  • excessive alcohol consumption
  • extra body fat

Over time, this lifestyle erodes the natural protection our body has. Similar to a castle in the midst of battle. With each round of attack, the walls surrounding the castle become damaged. How long can the castle defenses withstand the impact? How long can our body withstand the impact of a damaging lifestyle? Fortunately, there are signs of deterioration, alerting us to a potential of a larger problem. It could be weight gain, chronic exhaustion, high cholesterol, or type 2 diabetes. This is our body’s means of communicating that there is a war going on inside of us and the walls of protection are deteriorating.

Protect the only fortress you have. Take the extra steps of preventative care to ensure your quality of life, because healthy aging is not a guarantee for any of us. Chiropractic care is an effective way to remain on the offense to keep those invaders at bay. Stay vigilante and align yourself with those who will help to keep you well.

Seeking Balance

August 21, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

There seems to be a fundamental balance in life that requires the presence of two opposing forces for it to be achieved. Much like a sea saw that moves both up and then down depending on the size and force of either side. We realize that it is only through these two opposing forces that any type of movement can occur. In fact, without both sides nothing happens. There are many examples of opposing forces creating balance all around us:

  • If there is success, then we must have failure.
  • If there is joy, then we must experience sadness
  • If there is good health, there exists illness
  • If good exists, then so too must evil.
  • If there is light, then there must be darkness.

You see, the existence of one side creates the existence of the other. Saying something is truly beautiful implies a comparison to something that is not.

Every day at Damron Chiropractic & Wellness, two opposing forces collide. Every person that walks through our doors is seeking to achieve balance in their life as it relates to good health and overall wellness. It was only due to an imbalance that they sought us in the first place. However, maintaining balance is really a daily task. We must take an active role to ensure that it becomes a reality, otherwise we leave our future to chance which might be why a majority of our population is dealing with poor health today.

When we are young, we can afford to skimp on taking care of ourselves. We can pull all-nighters to study for exams, eat junk food galore, or jump into a spontaneous pick-up basketball game without any significant impact to our health. Fast forward to our 30s, 40s, or 50s and doing these things would end us up in surgery or, at a minimum take, days to recover from. Our bodies simply don’t rebound like it did when we were young which is why balance is imperative for healthy aging. Maintaining this balance will allow us to do the things we want to do without unnecessary consequences that derail our life.

Our unique team approach at Damron Chiropractic & Wellness brings you back to the balance you desire quickly and efficiently. Our goal is to value your time as much as you do, which is why we provide each patient with a plan of treatment that has a completion date at the end. We are here when you need us once you’ve achieved your balance again. That is the DCW difference! Educating our patients to recognize the signs of early imbalances allows them to see us only when preventative maintenance is required. Advocating for oneself empowers you to live more fully, without setbacks. Listening to what your body is saying allows you to achieve the balance you need every day to thrive.

A Reality Check On Goals

August 19, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

Goals. We’d love to have them and love to say we reached them. Yet goals can be very evasive and intimidating if we don’t fully understand and appreciate the reason for them.

The first day of school. We all know its coming, yet when it does we are always surprised and a little stunned. We realize that, we too, are procrastinators and in denial of the inevitable as that day draws nearer. Because who really is totally prepared for this fateful day at the end of summer? Those three words alone, “back to school,” bring us back to the reality of hectic schedules, homework, after school activities, late nights, projects, and exams. The thought of all this, after the relative calm of summer, is enough to send us in a tailspin. But the good news is that we are in control of all this, even if we don’t necessarily believe that we are. It all rests in one word – goals.

There’s a saying you’ve probably heard before – “Failure to plan is planning to fail” by Benjamin Franklin. No truer words can be said during this time of year. For it’s a failure to plan that causes us the most angst as we reenter reality in the fall. But knowing this and doing something about it are two totally different things. This post is on doing something about it using goals, but adding a healthy dose of reality as well.

Essentially it boils down to taking key steps each day towards a specific goal like:

  • Running a 5k.
  • Losing 10 pounds.
  • Detoxing your body.
  • Lowering your blood sugar.
  • Getting off all prescription medications.

Identifying your goal is only the first step though. An action plan with a timeline is also necessary. Without either of those pieces the goal can never be attained because frustration builds, motivation is lost, and the status quo is accepted once again. This is the failure to plan that Benjamin Franklin was referring to.

Planning for success takes careful thought and consideration. It takes effort to determine your limitations and other responsibilities. Working within your own personal framework will help guarantee success because obstacles to the goal are eliminated from the beginning. For example, if you are a social person, working out alone may not be the best action plan for you. You may get lonely, uninspired, and give up. Looking for a class that interests you may be a better option.

Another helpful tip is to be realistic about your goal. It’s incredibly easy to over-commit ourselves and then under-deliver. It only makes us feel like we failed. Take the fable about the tortoise and the hare. The over-achiever fails. The steady and realistic opponent succeeds. Honor who you are and what you are capable of, especially in the beginning. Your next goal can aim a little higher!

Celebrate your successes, big or small, and share them with others. Success can be contagious. You could also inspire someone else. Now who’s ready set some realistic goals?

Nutritional Diagnostic Testing

July 21, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

Nutrition is the fuel necessary to sustain life.  However, proper nutrition is the ideal from which our bodies thrive.  Unfortunately, our Western diet of fried and processed foods tends to be the nutrition many of us sustain life with.  This is not the fuel our body had in mind.  Fried and processed foods require our digestive system to work overtime, searching for the nutrients it needs to sustain itself. Over time, a consistent diet of this nature leaves our body nutrient deficient, opening the door to the onset of many chronic illnesses.  Nutritional diagnostic testing is a tool that provides insight into the core nutrients our body is receiving, plus determine  deficiencies.

Understanding the unique profile of an individual can shed light on the root cause of many chronic conditions such as:

  • depression
  • anxiety
  • sleep disturbances
  • fibromyalgia
  • fatigue

Diagnostic testing to assess the nutrition our body is receiving reveals more than one might think. Overall malnutrition is gauged, which according to the World Health Organization is defined as “the cellular imbalance between the supply of nutrients and energy and the body’s demand for them to ensure growth, maintenance, and specific functions.” In addition to malnutrition, nutritional diagnostic testing can also detect:

  • malabsorption
  • vitamin deficiencies
  • toxin exposure
  • need for detoxification
  • antioxidant reserve to combat free-radicals
  • energy production
  • abnormal metabolism

The quality of the food we eat significantly impacts our body.  Many times in such subtle ways that we aren’t even aware of it. Taking the time to look beyond the symptoms can save our body from needless suffering.  Our body is designed to extract the nutrients it needs from food that it recognizes.  Food like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein.  However, modern day conveniences have made the food virtually unrecognizable to our body. There are far too many ingredients and cooking methods that have fundamentally changed the type of food that we fuel ourselves with.  The implications of this trend are obvious.  Obesity rates are at an all time high, diabetes is common, and healthcare costs are soaring as a result of our poor choices.

Nutritional diagnostic testing can hone in on what exactly our body is deficient in.  There is no guess work.  All with a simple test.

The Wellness Wheel

July 9, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

What is the Wellness Wheel?

Truth be told, the essence of who we are is much like the spokes on a wheel.  There are many spokes that comprise the wheel, giving it motion.  Each spoke plays an instrumental role in the proper functioning of the wheel, too.  Should anything happen to those spokes – such as rust, damage, or breakage – it can affect how the wheel moves, causing a bumpy ride.  We are similar to that wheel, with each spoke representing a part of us.  It’s known as the Wellness Wheel.  The Wellness Wheel is comprised of seven key areas:

  • Physical
  • Mental
  • Spiritual
  • Social
  • Emotional
  • Intellectual
  • Occupational

When there is something broken in one aspect our our lives, it affects the whole of us.  For example, we lose our job, it affects us emotionally, occupationally, mentally, and physically.  It may also affect us in other areas as well, but the initial impact can be felt more sharply in those four.  Compartmentalizing things would be ideal, but unfortunately we are not designed that way.  What happens to us has the ability to affect every aspect of our lives, whether we want it to or not.

Looking at our lives like that of spokes on a wheel can help us see how connected things are, how one thing can affect another, and how balance improves the whole.  In the Physical realm, staying active, maintaining an ideal weight, eating a healthy diet, and exercising has a tremendous impact on the other six areas of our life.  Our mood is elevated, we feel better about ourselves, clears our mind, plus allows us to socialize with others.  Choosing to omit that Physical spoke from our daily lives has a ripple effect that, in time, we will no longer be able to ignore.  Sooner or later injury, a doctor’s visit, a friend’s comment, or simple frustration will cause us to make the decision to change.

Maintaining balance in our Wellness Wheel requires discipline and continuous effort.  It also requires self love and the investment of time.  Healthy aging doesn’t just happen for the majority of us.  While there might be those out there that inherited fantastic genes, or sheer luck, the rest of us need to be aware that our choices today affect our lives tomorrow.

Take a look at how you measure up to the Wellness Wheel.  Has it been a smooth ride or have there been some bumps in the road?  If there are bumps, are you addressing what is causing them?  A little self-inventory will go a long way in helping you live the best version of yourself.

Sleep Heals

May 2, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

We need it, yet a vast majority of us simply don’t get enough of it.  It’s health benefits are tremendous and we always feel great when we get it, yet we still decide it is not a priority.

Sleep is the gift we give to our body each day to recharge and revitalize ourselves, for it is only during that time that our body can heal from the effects of the day.  According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), adults need 7-8 hours of sleep a day and teenagers need 9-10.  However, 70% of both adults and teenagers do not get sufficient sleep.  So, how is this current state of affairs affecting the overall health of our bodies?

  • Short-term memory and the ability to multi-task are greatly affected by lack of sleep.  In fact, reducing sleep from 8 to 6 hours can have such a profound effect on a person that their mental performance can be equated to a person who is legally drunk.  Imagine the effect of missing an entire night of sleep. Our body has a great memory though and requires us to pay back our debts if we skimp in the sleep department.  Going weeks, months, or years without adequate sleep does not correct itself in one night.  Our body holds us accountable.
  • Our mood is significantly impacted if we are short on sleep.  Sleep deprivation causes individuals to be grumpy, easily frustrated, short tempered, and generally less happy.
  • Without proper sleep, we deprive our body from repairing itself from the effects of stress.  Cortisol is the stress hormone our body produces.  Proper sleep allows our body to decrease those high levels of cortisol and increase another hormone that is responsible for repairing the tissue that was affected by stress.  If cortisol is allowed to remain elevated, blood pressure can remain elevated, which increases the risk of heart attack and stroke.
  • Loss of sleep makes us hungry and also increases our need for more insulin.  This vicious cycle causes us to eat more to achieve normal levels of blood sugar, keeps us from wanting to stay active, and builds our anxiety.  This anxiety builds the stress which keeps us from sleeping.
  • Without sufficient sleep our immune system is greatly compromised leading to an increased risk for colon cancer, breast cancer, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes.  Even with a minor reduction in regular sleep, inflammation occurs which is associated with many chronic ailments.
  • Initial studies are indicating that a lack of sleep ages us faster because our body’s ability to release the growth hormone is hampered.  This particular hormone is responsible for breaking down fat, repairing tissue, and protecting the body from infection.  Lack of sleep prevents the body from rejuvenating itself on a daily basis.

Be proactive and protect your sleep.  It does a body (& mind) good!

What Do Symptoms Really Tell You?

February 13, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

“Experience Life,” a magazine published by Lifetime Fitness, is always full of informative articles on achieving optimal health and lifelong wellness.  In the most recent addition (January/February 2015), an article by Pilar Gerasimo, focused on minimizing symptom suppression in ways that support living a healthy life with little or no medical intervention.  There are several highlights from that feature piece that can help you to achieve your wellness goals.

In 2013, the Mayo Clinic published a report that said almost “70% of Americans are on at least one prescription drug, more than half take two, and 20% take five or more.”  The most common prescription drugs taken are used to treat depression, pain, acid reflux, infections, plus high cholesterol and blood pressure.  Interestingly, the reason these medications are prescribed to treat a condition that is dependent many times on a person’s lifestyle, and in no way addresses the root cause of their problem.

Medications mask the real problem, giving only temporary relief.  Like a revolving door, as symptoms present themselves medication is taken, then life continues on until, once again, the symptom presents itself.

The author, Pilar, goes on to say “We have been taught to think of a great many maladies (from dry eyes to social anxiety) as ‘diseases.'”  She acknowledges that this school of thinking brought to us by the pharmaceutical industry that makes a living helping us get “better.”

The article equated how we should handle our health problems with the way we handle burning something in the oven.  When the smoke alarm in our home goes off, we do everything we can to remedy the situation and stop the noise.  We would consider what went wrong in causing our dinner to burn, noting how to prevent it from happening the next time.  In the ideal world, we’d like to think that this is how we would handle our health problems that arise, but all too often that is not the case.  We are too quick to slap on a bandaid and carry on as we had been, knowing deep down that the problem still exists and future alarms of a burnt dinner will inevitably happen.

The good news is that there are ways you can change the outcome for the better:

  • Understand how resourceful your body really is in how it manifests symptoms, typically beginning with minor symptoms like fatigue or discomfort.  Listening to your body for the onset of symptoms can alleviate the impact of more serious ones later and allow the body to heal itself.
  • Recognize the connection between the different parts of your body.  In other words, a symptom in one place can indicate a problem in another.
  • Be your own advocate and always ask “why.”  Ask until you truly understand what is happening to you and what you can do about it.
  • Know the ins and outs of the medications you are currently taking and don’t assume anything.  Learn all the side-effects, including how they might affect your goal lifestyle of health and wellness.

Be your own advocate and start listening to you!

The Impact of Technology On Our Youth

January 20, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

Pain and discomfort does not discriminate, both young and old can suffer from it.  The most troubling is pain that our youth experience because we think “They’re too young for that.”  But the reality tells us otherwise.

Advances in technology has changed how schools educate and how we communicate. While this brings countless benefits it also has a ripple effect in that it causes us to remain in the same position for long periods of time whether working on a tablet or laptop in the classroom or engaging on social media.  It’s no wonder that our youngest generation suffers from chronic back pain, hunching over all that technology each and every day.  Think about it, doing anything for extended periods of time, maintaining the same position with our bodies will inevitably create tension and discomfort.  Our bodies simply were not designed to function in that way.

While we’d like to convince our kids to drop the phones and computers, this simply isn’t a reality.  In fact, it’s a lost cause because dropping the technology means giving up communicating with their friends, retrieving homework assignments, preparing class projects, and so on.  So what do we do to ensure their bodies are not compromised due to excessive use?
  • Keeping them aware of what doesn’t feel “right”
  • Being cognizant of what feels normal and what does not
  • Taking frequent breaks
  • Stretching
  • Changing positions
  • Addressing pain or discomfort if it persists

While it might be easy to take two ibuprofens and call it a day, it’s actually more like putting blinders on – if you can’t see it (or feel it) the problem has been solved, right?  Unfortunately this logic leads you back down the same road again and again.  There are times when addressing the problem head on provides the best solution for long-term success.  This could mean massage therapy, strength training, stretching exercises, or chiropractic care.  Devising a plan that keeps our bodies working as they should allows us to continue meeting the demands of today’s society, technology and all.  Having no plan is like walking around in the dark.  Sooner or later you’re going to hit something and it’s going to hurt.

Why ChiropracticProfessional Experience Personal Information
Dr. Damron established DCW because he was fed up with the current health model. Statistics continue to show an increase in pharmaceutical prescriptions to patients every day. Dr. Damron believes DCW’s unique approach to achieving overall wellness will revolutionize the healthcare industry through collaborative care utilizing chiropractic, massage therapy, rehabilitation, and nutrition. The DCW focus addresses the whole person versus a only symptom and uncovers the root cause. He also believes that education is vital to sustaining a healthier more vibrant lifestyle as well. His goal is to create a healthier society and a better place for our children to live.
Dr. Damron began his medical career with a Biology Degree from Wright State University in 2002. Erika Pantona, Insurance Specialist

Why DCWProfessional Experience Personal Information
Erika started coming to DCW in 2010 after spending two years in substantial pain after an injury. She had spent those two years at various specialists and taking medications to simply get up in the morning due to the pain. She was 18 when she found herself facing a major, life altering surgery (SI Fusion) and realized there must be another way. When she began her treatment plan at DCW she started to have days with little or no pain. She stopped taking her medications and realized they had been affecting her overall mood. In 2015 Erika joined the DCW team because they allowed her to live her life once again. She wants to prevent others from living in pain like she did unnecessarily, and to receive the benefits of chiropractic care.
Erika is well versed in the insurance industry with her previous employment at Express Scripts and Anthem.
Erika has two siblings and resides in Liberty Township. In her spare time she enjoys traveling and hiking with her family.

Why DCWProfessional Experience Personal Information
After moving to Ohio in 2010, I was in need of some relief from minor pain associated with working in customer service fields for 15 years. I was interested in seeking alternative forms of therapy and found a chiropractor in our small town. After going for a few visits, the therapy seemed somewhat outdated compared to what I had researched. In talking with my husband, he remembered that he knew someone who was a chiropractor. After just a few visits with Dr. Damron, I definitely noticed a difference in his techniques and style. It was nice to see results and feel like I was being listened to as a patient, not just heard…something you don’t always feel with doctors. After being a patient for several years, the opportunity came about to join the DCW team. It would be something different from what I had done in my past, however I knew my passion for working with people would translate well into helping patients receive the best care possible. I believed in the mission of DCW as a patient, and I am excited to be part of living that mission every day.
I am originally from St. Louis, MO. I graduated from the University of Missouri – Columbia with a degree in Secondary Education – Language Arts. I worked in restaurant/catering management for several years before starting a career in retail management and training.
In that position, I met my husband, Matt, who is from Wilmington, OH. After we got married in 2010, I moved to Wilmington. Realizing retail wasn’t where my heart was any longer, I began working as a substitute teacher in the Clinton County area. Matt and I live in Wilmington with our 6 year old German Shepard, Dale. I enjoy camping, boating, riding 4-wheelers, and spending time with family and friends. I love St. Louis Cardinals baseball and am a recently converted Cincinnati Bengals fan.
