National Chiropractic Health Month

September 25, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

Did you know that October is National Chiropractor Month? Each year the month of October is designated to this medical specialty and its countless benefits. There is also a theme selected each year by the American Chiropractic Association (ACA), and this year it’s “#PainFreeNation.”

According to a 2011 report by the Institute of Medicine, approximately 100 million Americans are affected by chronic pain, with “an estimated cost to American society of at least $560-$635 billion.” The result of this pain is the overuse of medications such as codeine, Vicodin, oxycodone, and Percocet. However, the problem is that these painkillers mask the problem plus increase the risk of death due to overdose. So, October is dedicated to helping Americans live pain-free without the over-dependence on prescription medications – “#PainFreeNation.”

The field of chiropractic is focused on the wellness of the entire person using a non-drug approach. Chiropractors look beyond the symptoms and work with the musculoskeletal and nervous systems to get to the root of the problem. Practices like Damron Chiropractic & Wellness (DCW) even take it a step further by incorporating therapeutic massage, rehabilitation, and nutrition into the treatment plan, as well. The trend today is quickly moving in the direction of a conservative, multidisciplinary approach when it comes to the treatment of pain. This couldn’t come at a better time because the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) had called the abuse of prescription pain medications as an “epidemic.”

In January of this year, a paramount change was made to the standards of care as it related to treating chronic pain. For the first time ever, Doctors of Chiropractic (DC) were included. This change came as the result of The Joint Commission, an independent not-for-profit organization, that accredits and certifies over 20,000 healthcare institutions and programs in the U.S. Since 1951, The Joint Commission has been in existence, ensuring that every hospital and health care facility provides “safe and effective care of the highest quality and value.” This is a huge milestone in the field of chiropractic because society is finally acknowledging the over-reliance on prescription drugs to treat pain.

October is a month that really puts the focus back on you. The trend in healthcare is finally shifting to one that does not simply treat the symptoms, but rather the cause. Digging deeper to give you the best outcomes for a higher quality of life that is ultimately pain-free.

Identifying a Concussion

September 8, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

An injury to your brain can be deadly, especially because the injury is typically something you cannot physically see. The person experiencing the injury may not even know how extensive it is and may exhibit normal behaviors to those around them. This does not mean the injury is minimal or that the person is okay. In fact, of all injuries a person can sustain, one to the brain can be the most deadly because of its elusive nature. A brain injury, or concussion, happens when a person sustains a blow to the head, or suffers an injury that jars or shakes the brain inside the skull. Knowing the signs to look for after someone experiences this injury can mean the difference between life and death.

Football is a national past-time. We love it at all levels of play. Recently, there has been a lot of media coverage regarding the concussions sustained by NFL players and the debilitating side effects that have handicapped them for life. But, a concussion can happen at any age, and not just with football either. A fall on the ice, a collision with another player during a soccer game, a hit in the head with a lacrosse stick can all cause a concussion.

Surprisingly, only 10% of concussions actually result in loss of consciousness. If that’s the reality, what happens the other 90% of the time? To help you identify whether or not someone has suffered a concussion, here is a list of common symptoms:

  • headaches/migraines
  • visual problems
  • light sensitivity
  • noise sensitivity
  • nausea
  • dizziness
  • attention problems
  • trouble with memory
  • fogginess
  • fatigue
  • trouble sleeping
  • sleeping less than normal
  • sleeping more than normal
  • increased emotions
  • sadness
  • irritability
  • nervousness

To be safe, it’s always best to seek medical treatment with any head injury. And although a concussion is considered a “manageable injury” by healthcare professionals, the key is early detection and proper treatment.

Knowledge IS Power

September 1, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

I’m sure you’ve seen those commercials featuring a famous celebrity talking into the camera about an important social issue like education or the environment. It’s a long standing initiative by NBC titled “The More You Know” as a public service initiative to share knowledge to improve lives. Each commercial was thought provoking and personal with the underlying message that the more you know about a particular topic, you will make better decisions for yourself and those you care about.

Educating ourselves starts from birth. We learn to find our thumb to comfort ourselves, we learn to crawl then walk and run, feed ourselves, and play. It continues into school, summer employment, and athletics. Growing up, our brains are like a sponge, absorbing information to make us smarter. We knew that knowledge was a requirement to get us into adulthood so we could become an independent, contributing person in our society. However, reaching that benchmark does not mean that learning stops there. In fact, it is only the beginning. Learning is a life-long process that earns us new jobs, promotions, higher education, plus takes us through all of life’s transitions like parenting and retirement. You see, the more you know, the more you empower yourself to not only do the right thing, but to understand why it’s the right thing.

Many would argue that our present day health crisis is a result of a lack of knowledge coupled with taking things for granted. This path has limited our ideas of what is really good for us and how to keep ourselves truly healthy. We should never stop acquiring knowledge, especially when it comes to our health. Depending on who is delivering the message, the information shared might be skewed to fit a particular agenda. This phenomenon isn’t new. Politicians, lawyers, and lobbyists take some information and use it to fit whatever purpose they need it for – to help win votes, defend or prosecute an accused person, or gain support for new legislation. In the healthcare industry, pharmaceutical companies have the money to advertise everywhere. Over and over again. The question we need to ask ourselves is, does that mean that’s the truth?

Recently, cholesterol lowering drugs have come under fire for having an adverse affect on a person’s insulin level, causing a higher incidence of type 2 diabetes. Does this new truth affect the advertising on the companies who make this drug? The point is this, educate yourself on what it really means to be healthy. Do not take the latest fads, diets, and drugs at face value. The more you know, the more good you can do for yourself in the long run. Don’t let misconceptions dictate the course of wellness you take, either. Misconceptions about professions like chiropractors have kept people in pain longer than they should be. However, when people discover the immense benefits they are amazed.

Don’t let the volume of advertising you see on television and in print determine how to best care for yourself and those you love. Choose to go deeper and arm yourself with the best defense – knowledge. Because the more you know, the more you can empower yourself.

A Chiropractic Solution

August 27, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

Just last Sunday, there was an article in the Cincinnati Enquirer about medics sustaining injuries while “moving heavy victims.” We may not think a paramedic is necessarily in danger when responding to an emergency, but treating a person who struggles with their weight can have a negative impact on the paramedics health. The article noted that “injuries can range from minor — taking a couple of days off work — to career ending and a change in lifestyle.” Not only are those who “serve and protect” put in harms way due to the nature of their profession, but performing the tasks required of their job can have consequences, too.  There are countless job hazards in other professions, as well. But, did you know that there is a trusted solution in treating those injured on the job?

The reality is that even professions that aren’t considered dangerous are still prone to accidents and the physical requirements of a job can cause undo stress on our bodies. The stress alone can create pain, discomfort, and imbalances that can negatively impact our sleep, family life, motivation, appetite, and immune system. With injuries, many times they are tolerable, so we choose to do nothing but wait until it gets better. Dealing with stress can be no different. Have you considered that there just might be a better way? A chiropractic way?

A chiropractor is a healthcare professional that can be there to help you mend those injuries sustained at work, from the minor to the life-changing. The difference is that there is no “band-aid” to hinder proper healing. A chiropractor gets to the core of the problem, identifies it, and provides a course of treatment that addresses the entire person. There is nothing worse than spinning in circles when it comes to your health. The end result is lost time, lost work, and lost peace of mind. A remedy that combines the benefits of chiropractic care, with the support of massage and rehabilitation is anything but a “band-aid.” It is the solution your body needs so it can function as it should.

Make sure that chiropractic care is an integral part of your healthcare team. Because minimizing the time it takes to get back to the job you love and feeling good again is what we want, isn’t it?

A Good Health “Impression”

August 13, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

What is a good health “impression”? Let’s start with a few simple analogies to help explain.

Growing up, we were told never to “judge a book by its cover.” If we did that we’d miss out reading a great book, simply because there wasn’t a great picture on the cover compelling us to open it. It’s interesting how a simple piece of advice can apply to other areas of our life. Take, for example, meeting a new person. Will we make a snap judgement about them without getting to know them? Or, what about purchasing a new home? Will we miss the potential in a piece of real estate because the house is in need of an exterior paint job? There is also a flip side to this lesson, as well. Do we make the assumption that a pretty package automatically makes something good for us? Common sense would tell us that it doesn’t.  But how many times do we make the decision based on appearance alone for the sake of a good health “impression”?

When it comes to our health, the same philosophy can be applied. Judging our personal health by what we see on the outside can be deceiving. Deceiving and deadly. Many times, the last sign we see that something is wrong with our health is the one on the surface. Take, for example, high blood pressure, diabetes, inflammation, hormone imbalances, and nutritional deficiencies. Just because we can’t see the effects of these conditions doesn’t mean they don’t exist.  Yet, how many of us do just that? It’s almost like we’d rather wait until it’s a four-alarm fire before we acknowledge there is a problem with our health.

The difference is choosing to be on the offense, versus the defense, when it comes to protecting our most cherished possession – our health. For too long, many of us have been on the defense, blocking the curve balls that life throws at us as we age. We seem to prefer reacting to health scares and challenges, rather than investing in prevention. But, what an easier road we could travel if we chose the offensive approach. Choosing to take the steps each and every day to give our body what it needs to serve us well. Daily steps such as:

  • Staying physically active
  • Getting the recommended sleep each night
  • Drinking alcohol with moderation
  • Not smoking
  • Eating a well-balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and lean protein
  • Creating a baseline of our health so we can anticipate problems before they arise
  • Learning to listen to how we feel each day
  • Advocating for ourselves
  • Relying less on the “truths” of big business and the media
  • Assuming less

Healthy aging requires nothing more than our willingness to not be passive any longer. To challenge the status quo so that we can reap the benefits with good health. Removing our assumptions enables us to enjoy a better quality of life, for ourselves and those we love.

Choosing Your Chiropractor

August 7, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

Choosing a Chiropractor is not unlike choosing any other healthcare professional.  It’s a very personal relationship where you truly feel he or she has your best interests at heart.  But there are other things to consider as well because you are essentially advocating for yourself.  Good health is our greatest asset and it should never be taken for granted.  It needs to be earned through daily effort.  Partnering with a Chiropractor can help you achieve and maintain this asset throughout your life.  The key, however, is making sure you chose wisely.

There are many false stereotypes regarding Chiropractors, just as there are for other professions such as lawyers and politicians.  Common sense tells us that we mustn’t judge a book by its cover, but that’s exactly what we do.  We take hearsay and turn it into fact without investing the time to find out for ourselves the truth.  The end result?  Lost opportunity to benefit from the care and expertise from a committed professional.  Rushing to a snap judgement means we’d rather follow what another says.  Relying on unsubstantiated claims can have a negative impact on our lives.  Take, for example, the marketing of several consumer goods over the decades:  Tab, Olestra, nicotine, aspartame, MSG, and GMOs.  We took for granted that because it was available, it was good for us.  Years later we learned we were wrong.

Chiropractors are doctors that specialize in the musculoskeletal and nervous systems.  They practice a drug-free, hands-on approach to healthcare.  With broad diagnostic skills, they are trained to recommend therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises, in addition to nutritional, dietary, and lifestyle counseling.  They are also best known for providing spinal adjustments to help restore joint mobility that causes inflammation and pain.

But what other services does a chiropractor provide?

  • Diagnostic imaging
  • Nutritional supplements
  • Clinical examinations
  • Patient education
  • Electrical muscle stimulation
  • Transcutaneous electrical muscle stimulators (TENS)
  • Heat and ice therapy

However, did you know that there are also other value-added services that you should be looking for when choosing your chiropractor?  Here are a few questions to consider as you explore your options:

  • Is massage incorporated with treatment?
  • What about rehabilitation?
  • How much time does the Chiropractor spend with each patient?
  • How are patients educated on achieving and maintaining wellness?
  • Is decompression as part of the treatment options?

Other ways to educate yourself on the philosophies of a particular Chiropractor is to check social media.  Are there recent testimonials?  Pictures of the practice, the doctor, the other team members?  What about reviews?  What is the general feeling regarding the practice?

When it comes to your health, never settle.  A little homework can go a long way!

Nutritional Diagnostic Testing

July 21, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

Nutrition is the fuel necessary to sustain life.  However, proper nutrition is the ideal from which our bodies thrive.  Unfortunately, our Western diet of fried and processed foods tends to be the nutrition many of us sustain life with.  This is not the fuel our body had in mind.  Fried and processed foods require our digestive system to work overtime, searching for the nutrients it needs to sustain itself. Over time, a consistent diet of this nature leaves our body nutrient deficient, opening the door to the onset of many chronic illnesses.  Nutritional diagnostic testing is a tool that provides insight into the core nutrients our body is receiving, plus determine  deficiencies.

Understanding the unique profile of an individual can shed light on the root cause of many chronic conditions such as:

  • depression
  • anxiety
  • sleep disturbances
  • fibromyalgia
  • fatigue

Diagnostic testing to assess the nutrition our body is receiving reveals more than one might think. Overall malnutrition is gauged, which according to the World Health Organization is defined as “the cellular imbalance between the supply of nutrients and energy and the body’s demand for them to ensure growth, maintenance, and specific functions.” In addition to malnutrition, nutritional diagnostic testing can also detect:

  • malabsorption
  • vitamin deficiencies
  • toxin exposure
  • need for detoxification
  • antioxidant reserve to combat free-radicals
  • energy production
  • abnormal metabolism

The quality of the food we eat significantly impacts our body.  Many times in such subtle ways that we aren’t even aware of it. Taking the time to look beyond the symptoms can save our body from needless suffering.  Our body is designed to extract the nutrients it needs from food that it recognizes.  Food like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein.  However, modern day conveniences have made the food virtually unrecognizable to our body. There are far too many ingredients and cooking methods that have fundamentally changed the type of food that we fuel ourselves with.  The implications of this trend are obvious.  Obesity rates are at an all time high, diabetes is common, and healthcare costs are soaring as a result of our poor choices.

Nutritional diagnostic testing can hone in on what exactly our body is deficient in.  There is no guess work.  All with a simple test.

The Poor Posture Dilemma

June 4, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

Not only are we a highly sedentary society with the plethora of modern day conveniences, but we are also victims of prolonged sitting due to this sedentary lifestyle.  Many times we mistakenly believe that poor posture only manifests itself in older adults, when we see an elderly person with kyphosis, or a hunchback.  While it may have taken decades to reach this point, the usual culprit in this condition is poor posture.  Being aware of our lifestyle and how it impacts our body can help prevent many ailments that can afflict us later in life, at a time when quality of life means that much more to us.

A study was published in the Annals of Internal Medicine revealing strong links between excessive sitting throughout the day with heart-disease, diabetes, and higher odds of a shortened lifespan.  On the surface, this isn’t really surprising because if we are sitting, we are not moving.  If we are not moving, we are not burning the calories we are consuming.  If we are not burning those calories, then our weight increases, and if our weight increases it puts considerable stress on our organs and our body.  The reality is that we are born with this unrealistic notion that bad things only happen to others, not us, and that we’ll “start tomorrow” living a more healthy lifestyle.  This is the popular mindset that inevitably gets us into trouble.

There’s a new saying being heard in the healthcare arena that “sitting is the new smoking.”  This is our red flag that the time is now to change our habits.  Correct posture is probably something we’re unsure of – what it looks like, what it feels like.  The reality is that it means far more than standing straight and tall, it also means balance and equilibrium.  Being in alignment, with each body region in its correct region, helps improve posture, reduce muscle stress, and minimize joint stress.  This means the head is balanced over the torso, the torso over the pelvis, and the pelvis over the feet.  Being aligned has many benefits such as lower risk of injury, increased stability, and more control – all essential to aging well.

Start today with a picture of your posture.  Take inventory of your current state of affairs.  Determine if all those hours working at a computer or hunching over a smartphone is beginning to take its toll on your posture.  Posture can be corrected, but only if you know there is a problem and are willing to invest in doing something about it.  After all, health is the only true wealth we really have.

60 Is the New 40

April 24, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

Just the other week, the Today Show featured a segment on aging.  It pointed out that as our life expectancy continues to rise, so does our ability to stay active longer.  This particular segment suggested not only is “60 is the new 40,” but that 60 is now considered middle-aged because there is a lot of living still to do once a person reaches the age of 60.  Living a healthy lifestyle certainly has contributed to this trend, as well as the advances made in both medicine and technology.  And what an incredible gift that is considering not too long ago the age of 60 meant you were ancient!

The best news is that retirement can be that much more fulfilling because if our body is well cared for, we can do the things we truly enjoy like:

  • travelling
  • hiking
  • golfing
  • tennis
  • gardening
  • dancing
  • yoga
  • Zumba
  • walking
  • swimming

Retirement is that time in our lives where we can finally focus on ourselves once again, after raising a family and building our professional lives.  So, planning for that phase is key to enjoying it fully.  In the Sunday, April 19, 2015 Cincinnati Enquirer, there was a full-page article on getting fit for an active retirement, stating that travelling and socializing are much easier if you are in shape.  The article suggested that many “people are planning ahead for their physical fitness in retirement just as they plan for their financial fitness.”  What good is it if we have the financial means to retire but can’t enjoy it?

Another benefit to being fit after 60 is a significant reduction in chronic conditions plus better mental health, which means less money paid for healthcare.  Staying active and eating right contribute to maintaining a healthy weight and a sharper mind.  A sedentary lifestyle of poor eating habits does just the opposite, causing an increase in weight and the development of chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and joint problems.

Take control of your future with a plan, but resist the urge to overdo it because you think you can get fit faster.  That is a recipe for injury.  If your weight and overall fitness is less than ideal today, remember that it didn’t happen overnight – reaching your fitness goals won’t happen that way either.  Be proactive and commit to yourself now so you can savor the rewards of retirement.

Range of Motion

February 25, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

“The range, measured in degrees of a circle, through which a joint can be extended or flexed.”

Everyone has a different range of motion for any given joint.  Take for example an Olympic gymnast.  Watching this Champion compete leaves you in awe of her extreme flexibility.  Someone without that level of training can appear quite limited in comparison with their range of motion. In reality, it is completely within that person’s normal range.

As we age, life circumstances have a tendency to affect our bodies, in ways that can significantly limit our mobility and overall movement.  But what exactly are these life circumstances that can affect our range of motion as we age?

  • Our overall flexibility and motion can be affected by muscle or fat mass.  An overabundance of either can limit how far we can extend an arm or leg, or even how far we can bend over to touch our toes.
  • The pain caused by injury will impact range of motion.  When the body experiences pain the muscles surrounding the injury/pain will contract reflexively to prevent further injury.  Examples include sprains, bruises, and dislocation.
  • When our body is afflicted by disease, like arthritis or bursitis, the joints are affected causing pain and, once again, a limited range of motion.
  • If muscles are not moved or stretched regularly they can become stiff and lack extensibility, which is flexibility and elasticity.  That is why it is recommended that you stretch properly before engaging in sports or certain exercises like jogging.
  • Scar tissue from surgery or injury can limit the movement of joints due to the loss of elasticity in the affected tissue.

Fortunately the body is an amazing machine that, if given the proper care, can rehabilitate itself.  While many of us will never be that Olympic gymnast, or any gymnast for that matter, we can achieve the ideal range of motion for our age and body type.  We needn’t limit ourselves due to contentment, ignorance, fear, or pain.  Working with the right team of healthcare professionals – like a chiropractor, massage therapist, and rehabilitation specialist – will help you work you way back to optimal motion and flexibility, so you can stay there.

Never settle for anything less.

Dr. Damron believes DCW’s unique approach to achieving overall wellness will revolutionize the healthcare industry through collaborative care utilizing chiropractic, massage therapy, rehabilitation, and nutrition. The DCW focus addresses the whole person versus a only symptom and uncovers the root cause. He also believes that education is vital to sustaining a healthier more vibrant lifestyle as well. His goal is to create a healthier society and a better place for our children to live.
Dr. Damron began his medical career with a Biology Degree from Wright State University in 2002. Nicole Foreman, Licensed Massage Therapist

Why MassageProfessional Experience Personal Information
Nicole always wanted a career that was focused on helping people. It wasn’t until she drove past the Dayton School of Medical Massage on a daily basis that it became clear what she was meant to do. She enrolled as soon as she could and it has been the best decision she has ever made. She loves the feeling of knowing she has alleviated someone’s pain and possibly made their day better in some way. She had been working alongside chiropractors for over 7 years before joining the DCW team. Before DCW she never really felt her opinions and insights were valued or even asked for, which she felt hindered patient care and the effectiveness of each treatment. At DCW she feels valued and part of a practice that is focused on changing the approach of wellness with cohesive and effective patient care.
Nicole is a graduate of the Dayton School of Medical Massage and obtained her license in 2008. She utilizes Deep Tissue, Swedish and Thai massage techniques to relieve pain, tension, and stress while increasing range of motion and flexibility.
Nicole is married to her husband of 5 years and they one daughter, Rylee, and one child on the way due in September 2016. As a family they enjoy camping, hiking and spending time at the lake during the summer.

Erika Pantona, Insurance Specialist

Why DCWProfessional Experience Personal Information
Erika started coming to DCW in 2010 after spending two years in substantial pain after an injury. She had spent those two years at various specialists and taking medications to simply get up in the morning due to the pain. She was 18 when she found herself facing a major, life altering surgery (SI Fusion) and realized there must be another way. When she began her treatment plan at DCW she started to have days with little or no pain. She stopped taking her medications and realized they had been affecting her overall mood. In 2015 Erika joined the DCW team because they allowed her to live her life once again. She wants to prevent others from living in pain like she did unnecessarily, and to receive the benefits of chiropractic care.
Erika is well versed in the insurance industry with her previous employment at Express Scripts and Anthem.
Erika has two siblings and resides in Liberty Township. In her spare time she enjoys traveling and hiking with her family.

Amy Faris, Patient Care Coordinator

Why DCWProfessional Experience Personal Information
After moving to Ohio in 2010, I was in need of some relief from minor pain associated with working in customer service fields for 15 years. I was interested in seeking alternative forms of therapy and found a chiropractor in our small town. After going for a few visits, the therapy seemed somewhat outdated compared to what I had researched. In talking with my husband, he remembered that he knew someone who was a chiropractor. After just a few visits with Dr. Damron, I definitely noticed a difference in his techniques and style. It was nice to see results and feel like I was being listened to as a patient, not just heard…something you don’t always feel with doctors. After being a patient for several years, the opportunity came about to join the DCW team. It would be something different from what I had done in my past, however I knew my passion for working with people would translate well into helping patients receive the best care possible. I believed in the mission of DCW as a patient, and I am excited to be part of living that mission every day.
I am originally from St. Louis, MO. I graduated from the University of Missouri – Columbia with a degree in Secondary Education – Language Arts. I worked in restaurant/catering management for several years before starting a career in retail management and training.
In that position, I met my husband, Matt, who is from Wilmington, OH. After we got married in 2010, I moved to Wilmington. Realizing retail wasn’t where my heart was any longer, I began working as a substitute teacher in the Clinton County area. Matt and I live in Wilmington with our 6 year old German Shepard, Dale. I enjoy camping, boating, riding 4-wheelers, and spending time with family and friends. I love St. Louis Cardinals baseball and am a recently converted Cincinnati Bengals fan.
