Surgery Is the Last Option

When you have an accident or get injured, surgery should be your last option, not your first. Granted there will be times when it is apparent that surgery is required, depending on the severity of the injury. But many times we mistakenly jump to the conclusion that the body is unable to heal itself and surgery is needed. In fact, the surgical option can come with another set of potential issues and complications whether it’s a knee replacement or a herniated disc. So, if the situation permits, exploring other treatment remedies may not only heal you but also prevent a longer road to recovery.

Strengthening the affected area through a series of specific exercises can significantly reduce the chance of surgery if you are working with a credible professional that is trained to do just that. Being actively engaged in physical therapy over a set course of time, plus eating the right foods and taking the right nutritional supplements can help to heal the body, too. But what if after all the effort to correct the problem it doesn’t work? Well, then surgery can be your last option. Surgery is invasive, not a guarantee, expensive, and many times requires physical therapy afterwards. Why not try other options first?

Your body is an amazing organism made up of many complex systems. Given the chance, it has the ability to heal itself if given the right tools. Perhaps the injury occurred in the first place because we lacked balance and were weak. Perhaps we overexerted ourselves causing our body to stain. Perhaps we thought we were okay after a minor car accident only to wake up two weeks later in pain. Seeking a holistic approach to our body can provide great insight as to the true cause of our problem and eliminate countless visits to other doctors who may opt for surgery first.

Patience, along with rehabilitation, is really a virtue, especially when it comes to the well-being of our body.

Live to Learn

Imagine how your life would be if you stopped learning in grade school. What if you stopped learning in high school? Or college? Or at your very first job out of school? If you look back over your life, you probably realize that it has been full of life lessons. The times where we fell flat on our face but got up, brushed ourselves off and knew we would never make the same mistake again. A fundamental truth to life is that we live to learn. It never stops and that is good.

The milestones in life give us another opportunity to learn – getting married, having children, retiring, moving. Even when get sick or injured we learn once again. Preconceived ideas or beliefs, based on our life experiences, can limit our learning. We may unknowingly have on blinders that try to prevent us from learning a better or new way to do something. Take, for example, chiropractic care. Do we know that pain caused by an injury, such as with a fall, a car accident, or sports, can be successfully treated by a Chiropractor? Most of us probably do not. Most of us would take medication to address the pain versus addressing the source of the pain as a Chiropractor would. Most of us would assume that because there wasn’t an injury in the car accident that all is okay. Most of us would assume that playing sports means “no pain, no gain” – it’s just part of the territory. This viewpoint couldn’t be further from the truth.

The truth as we know it can be limited to what we actually know. In other words, if we stopped going to school in the 5th grade, our knowledge would be limited to that of a 5th grader. For the rest of our life we would be at a significant disadvantage to others who continued on with their education. We can use this same analogy with our health. We can severely limit our ability to maintain good health if we rely on what we learn from the media or commercials or pop culture. Rather, we should always be on a quest to learn more. Learning more can have a tremendous impact on the quality of our life. By living to learn, we take control of our destiny because we search for the truth versus making assumptions. We also come to realize that the many things we put no value in actually do. You see, depending on who is delivering the message, whether it’s on t.v. or an advertisement in a magazine, the truth is skewed in the favor of the company because they are selling a product. That’s not to say the product being advertised is of value, it simply means that there is a purpose to that ad – revenue. The truth is validated when YOU do your own homework. When YOU live to learn as much as you can about obtaining optimal health. Imagine the possibilities.

Finding the Root Cause

In the field of law there are attorneys. Just as in the field of medicine there are doctors. However, within each field there are countless specialties. In law, there are attorneys that specialize in real estate transactions, divorce, legal defense, prosecution, corporate, and tax. With medicine, there are doctors that specialize in pediatrics, cancer, surgery, heart, female reproduction, and trauma. It is good to have specialities because when there is a specific problem, we want a specific answer, not generalities. When it comes to our health, we know preventative is best. But there are inevitably times when that doesn’t happen and we get sick or injured. Sometimes when that happens there is a ripple effect. Symptoms may be alleviated, but the underlying problem may persist. The good news is that with our overall wellness, there are doctors that focus on finding the root cause of the problem and preventing future problems. One of those doctors is a Doctor of Chiropractic.

What many people don’t realize is that a Doctor of Chiropractic chooses this field of practice because he or she believes in a holistic approach to a person’s health. Each part of a person is intimately connected – mentally, physically, emotionally. What happens to one part of us affects all the others. We cannot separate things into compartments. Chiropractors also believe that prescription medications tend to mask the underlying problem and have the potential to create other problems for the person down the road, too. Chiropractors work tirelessly to resolve the root cause of the problem, whether it’s pain, discomfort, lack of mobility or flexibility, migraines, fatigue, or inflammation. If you have never been treated by a chiropractor this may sound counterintuitive to what we have been exposed to in the media and press with respect to what one might call “modern day medicine.” You needn’t look too far to find countless advertisements for prescription medications offering a solution to various health ailments. But do they always solve the true cause of your problem?

Chiropractic care is a comprehensive approach to the overall wellness of the entire individual. It seeks to understand, then provide a solution to the real problem. It finds the cause.

Identifying a Concussion

An injury to your brain can be deadly, especially because the injury is typically something you cannot physically see. The person experiencing the injury may not even know how extensive it is and may exhibit normal behaviors to those around them. This does not mean the injury is minimal or that the person is okay. In fact, of all injuries a person can sustain, one to the brain can be the most deadly because of its elusive nature. A brain injury, or concussion, happens when a person sustains a blow to the head, or suffers an injury that jars or shakes the brain inside the skull. Knowing the signs to look for after someone experiences this injury can mean the difference between life and death.

Football is a national past-time. We love it at all levels of play. Recently, there has been a lot of media coverage regarding the concussions sustained by NFL players and the debilitating side effects that have handicapped them for life. But, a concussion can happen at any age, and not just with football either. A fall on the ice, a collision with another player during a soccer game, a hit in the head with a lacrosse stick can all cause a concussion.

Surprisingly, only 10% of concussions actually result in loss of consciousness. If that’s the reality, what happens the other 90% of the time? To help you identify whether or not someone has suffered a concussion, here is a list of common symptoms:

  • headaches/migraines
  • visual problems
  • light sensitivity
  • noise sensitivity
  • nausea
  • dizziness
  • attention problems
  • trouble with memory
  • fogginess
  • fatigue
  • trouble sleeping

The Wellness Wheel

What is the Wellness Wheel?

Truth be told, the essence of who we are is much like the spokes on a wheel.  There are many spokes that comprise the wheel, giving it motion.  Each spoke plays an instrumental role in the proper functioning of the wheel, too.  Should anything happen to those spokes – such as rust, damage, or breakage – it can affect how the wheel moves, causing a bumpy ride.  We are similar to that wheel, with each spoke representing a part of us.  It’s known as the Wellness Wheel.  The Wellness Wheel is comprised of seven key areas:

  • Physical
  • Mental
  • Spiritual
  • Social
  • Emotional
  • Intellectual
  • Occupational

When there is something broken in one aspect our our lives, it affects the whole of us.  For example, we lose our job, it affects us emotionally, occupationally, mentally, and physically.  It may also affect us in other areas as well, but the initial impact can be felt more sharply in those four.  Compartmentalizing things would be ideal, but unfortunately we are not designed that way.  What happens to us has the ability to affect every aspect of our lives, whether we want it to or not.

Looking at our lives like that of spokes on a wheel can help us see how connected things are, how one thing can affect another, and how balance improves the whole.  In the Physical realm, staying active, maintaining an ideal weight, eating a healthy diet, and exercising has a tremendous impact on the other six areas of our life.  Our mood is elevated, we feel better about ourselves, clears our mind, plus allows us to socialize with others.  Choosing to omit that Physical spoke from our daily lives has a ripple effect that, in time, we will no longer be able to ignore.  Sooner or later injury, a doctor’s visit, a friend’s comment, or simple frustration will cause us to make the decision to change.

Maintaining balance in our Wellness Wheel requires discipline and continuous effort.  It also requires self love and the investment of time.  Healthy aging doesn’t just happen for the majority of us.  While there might be those out there that inherited fantastic genes, or sheer luck, the rest of us need to be aware that our choices today affect our lives tomorrow.

Take a look at how you measure up to the Wellness Wheel.  Has it been a smooth ride or have there been some bumps in the road?  If there are bumps, are you addressing what is causing them?  A little self-inventory will go a long way in helping you live the best version of yourself.

Trigger Points (Part I)

Did you know that there are over 400 muscles in your body?  Every day they work in unison, just like the musicians in an orchestra, giving our body the gift of motion.  From the simplest movement to the most complex, each muscle is connected.  When something goes wrong, as with an injury or surgery, the results are instantaneous and obvious.  Our body no longer exhibits fluid movement, flexibility, or the range that it did.  We experience pain and discomfort.  But, it does not require a significant injury or surgery for our muscles to encounter dysfunction.  Everyday activities can lead to problems that manifest itself as trigger points.

Trigger points is a term that massage therapists, chiropractors, those in rehabilitation and physical therapy will use to identify areas of pain or tenderness on a patient they are working with.  Underneath our skin, every muscle, organ, tendon, nerve, and blood vessel is covered by fascia.  Fascia is the thin sheath of fibrous tissue that  holds everything in place within us.  Myofascia is the fascia that covers the muscles. Because we rely so much on our muscles every day, they are prone to overuse and stress.  When this happens, the myofascia can tear and then adhere together preventing the muscles from working as they should.  This, in turn, causes the “knots” you feel in areas like your neck and shoulders which massage therapists, chiropractors, and rehabilitation specialists call – trigger points.

In reality, trigger points have a domino effect on our body’s ability to function because it leads to an increase in muscle stiffness and tenderness and a decrease in range of motion.  Also, there is something called referral pain.  This is the result of the discomfort radiating from the adhesion or trigger point.  This can happen in the area with the knot or another area of the body altogether.  Interestingly, a vast majority of the time the pain felt is actually in a different location than what is triggering it.  A great example of this referral pain is with sciatica (shooting pain in the buttocks and legs).  The pain a person feels is not with the sciatic nerve, but rather from the gluteal area.  The gluteal area is triggering the referral pain which is felt shooting down the buttocks and legs.

The Poor Posture Dilemma

Not only are we a highly sedentary society with the plethora of modern day conveniences, but we are also victims of prolonged sitting due to this sedentary lifestyle.  Many times we mistakenly believe that poor posture only manifests itself in older adults, when we see an elderly person with kyphosis, or a hunchback.  While it may have taken decades to reach this point, the usual culprit in this condition is poor posture.  Being aware of our lifestyle and how it impacts our body can help prevent many ailments that can afflict us later in life, at a time when quality of life means that much more to us.

A study was published in the Annals of Internal Medicine revealing strong links between excessive sitting throughout the day with heart-disease, diabetes, and higher odds of a shortened lifespan.  On the surface, this isn’t really surprising because if we are sitting, we are not moving.  If we are not moving, we are not burning the calories we are consuming.  If we are not burning those calories, then our weight increases, and if our weight increases it puts considerable stress on our organs and our body.  The reality is that we are born with this unrealistic notion that bad things only happen to others, not us, and that we’ll “start tomorrow” living a more healthy lifestyle.  This is the popular mindset that inevitably gets us into trouble.

There’s a new saying being heard in the healthcare arena that “sitting is the new smoking.”  This is our red flag that the time is now to change our habits.  Correct posture is probably something we’re unsure of – what it looks like, what it feels like.  The reality is that it means far more than standing straight and tall, it also means balance and equilibrium.  Being in alignment, with each body region in its correct region, helps improve posture, reduce muscle stress, and minimize joint stress.  This means the head is balanced over the torso, the torso over the pelvis, and the pelvis over the feet.  Being aligned has many benefits such as lower risk of injury, increased stability, and more control – all essential to aging well.

Start today with a picture of your posture.  Take inventory of your current state of affairs.  Determine if all those hours working at a computer or hunching over a smartphone is beginning to take its toll on your posture.  Posture can be corrected, but only if you know there is a problem and are willing to invest in doing something about it.  After all, health is the only true wealth we really have.

Benefits of Stretching

Most of us stretch our bodies at various times during the day – when we wake up in the morning, have been sitting in the same position for a while, before we head out for a run – but did you know that stretching can, and should, do much more than that?  That it has the ability to help our body function more optimally?  Let’s start with what happens to our bodies when we don’t stretch.

As we age the muscles in our body naturally begin to tighten.  This tightening causes problems with the range of motion in our joints.  This limitation can hamper our life because normal routines become more difficult to accomplish, remaining active becomes more difficult, and our susceptibility to injury increases. Stretching can reverse this situation and keep our muscles loose and limber.  Here are some of the benefits to incorporating stretching into our daily lives:

  • Reduced muscle tension.
  • Increased flexibility and range of motion in the joints.
  • Enhanced muscular coordination.
  • Increased blood circulation.
  • Increased energy levels.
  • Helps ensure correct posture.
  • Reduces muscle soreness.
  • Helps speed recovery from muscle and joint injuries.
  • Reduced stress.

Committing time every day to stretching the muscles in your body that give you the mobility you love is essential.  The good news is that the time commitment is small.  10-15 minutes is all it takes to give your muscles what they need.  But where do you begin?

  • Stretching should be done when your muscles are warm.  Begin by doing some low-impact cardio like walking, jogging, or biking for a few minutes to get the blood pumping.
  • You don’t need to stretch the entire body to see and feel the benefits.  Start with the areas that feel the most tight.  Focus your stretching efforts there first and gradually add other areas to your routine.
  • Try to hold each stretch for at least 30 seconds and up to 60 seconds depending on how tight the muscle feels.
  • Don’t bounce as you stretch as it may cause small tearing in your muscles.
  • Stretching should not cause pain.  If you feel pain you have pushed it too far.
  • Breathe deeply while stretching.
  • Be sure to stretch BOTH sides of your body.
  • It’s always best to stretch both before and after your physical activity to keep the muscles healthy.

Stretching is one of the best ways you can take care of the body you have.  Don’t let another day slip by without making stretching a priority in your daily routine.

Electrical Muscle Stimulation

Why would stimulating the muscle with an electric current be a good thing?  While it may sound like something from an old Frankenstein movie, Electrical Muscle Stimulation is actually a painless therapy given when pain is a problem.

There are times when our muscles become inflamed or strained either due to injury or overuse.  When this occurs, the use of electrical muscle stimulation therapy can be utilized with the purpose of reducing muscle spasms, tightness, and pain through the use of a mild electrical current.  This in turn relaxes the muscle so that healing can truly begin.

We have over 600 voluntary muscles in our body that work together to control even the simplest of movements.  These muscles work in conjunction with both the joints and bones to provide motion.  If there is a misalignment within this network then a problem occurs in the form of a muscle spasm the nerve and the muscle have been disrupted.  If this condition is left untreated, chronic pain can become permanent.  Fortunately, a Doctor of Chiropractic is trained on the use of electrical muscle stimulation to address this condition.

There are two types of this therapy, one that is performed within the office and the other that is portable, and both produce a mild heat.  The former is used to prevent or reduce muscle atrophy, which is the weakening or loss of muscle tone usually experienced after surgery or injury.  It also helps by

  • increasing blood flow to the muscles,
  • increasing muscle strength,
  • enhancing muscle endurance,
  • increasing range of motion, and
  • relieving muscle pain.

The portable treatment is given through a device called a Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation unit, or  TENS.  This option allows the patient to administer pain relief at home through small electrical pulses across the skin and along the nerve strands.  These pulses help prevent pain signals from reaching the brain because it stimulates the production of endorphins, which are the body’s natural pain killers.  The patient simply attaches the small pads on the affected area and turns the TENS on to the prescribed level.

In both cases the prescribed treatment is typically a 10-15 minute session, the length of time depending on how acute the injury is.  Many times a single treatment has a significant impact on lowering or eliminating the pain. From that point on treatment is only as needed, meaning if a patient brings a TENS unit home they have the ability to administer the stimulation if the pain returns.

The foundation to your wellness as you age is understanding that you have options.  Knowing what they are helps you to get back to high quality living sooner versus later.  Keep yourself informed.

Chronic Pain

According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), chronic pain is defined as “any pain lasting more than 12 weeks.”  It affects 100 million people and can range from mild, excruciating, episodic or continuous, and simply be an inconvenience or totally incapacitate a person.  The effects of chronic pain can take both a physical and an emotional toll.

But where does chronic pain come from?  What causes it?  Some of the most common sources are:

  • Headaches
  • Joint pain
  • Injury
  • Backaches
  • Tendinitis
  • Sinuses
  • Carpel Tunnel Syndrome

Chronic pain can weigh heavily on a person emotionally, causing anxiety, depression, anger, and stress.  Studies indicate a correlation between emotional well being and the body’s ability to fight infection.  Individuals who suffer from chronic pain are in a relentless cycle from which it is difficult to emerge from.

Fortunately, there are options for sufferers of chronic pain, and surprisingly, many of these options are more holistic and proactive than traditional medicinal remedies.  The goal is to uncover and address the source of the problem versus simply masking it.  Here are a few areas to explore if you, or someone you know, is suffering from chronic pain:

  • Anti-inflammatory plants and herbs – turmeric, green tea, ginger, rosemary, and willow bark
  • Fish oil- omega-3s for headaches, back pain, some
  • Vitamin D increase
  • Exercise – releasing endorphins through physical activity can provide pain relief as endorphins are the body’s natural pain reliever
  • Stretching – through massage or other exercises
  • Meditation
  • Spinal Decompression – through Chiropractic care
  • Spinal Manipulation

It’s important that the underlying cause of the pain is correctly identified so that the proper course of treatment can be prescribed.  A Chiropractor can work with both a Licensed Massage Therapist and a Rehabilitation Specialist to develop a plan to help a person get back to a pain-free life once again.  And while it might take some time to get there, it will be worth every step.

Dr. Damron established DCW because he was fed up with the current health model. Statistics continue to show an increase in pharmaceutical prescriptions to patients every day. Although he does believe some medications are necessary, he believes the majority of what is prescribed is actually harmful to the patient’s long-term health, creating another set of healthcare issues as a result. Dr. Damron believes DCW’s unique approach to achieving overall wellness will revolutionize the healthcare industry through collaborative care utilizing chiropractic, massage therapy, rehabilitation, and nutrition. The DCW focus addresses the whole person versus a only symptom and uncovers the root cause. He also believes that education is vital to sustaining a healthier more vibrant lifestyle as well. His goal is to create a healthier society and a better place for our children to live.
Dr. Damron began his medical career with a Biology Degree from Wright State University in 2002. He went on to receive his Doctorate of Chiropractic from the prestigious Palmer College of Chiropractic in Port Orange, Florida in 2007. While attending Palmer, he had the opportunity to travel abroad to Madagascar and provide chiropractic care to the native Malagasy people. Dr. Damron has continued his post-graduate studies with a focus on nutrition, rehabilitation, and functional medicine.
Dr. Damron and his wife, Kristy, reside in West Chester with their two young children, Graden and Isabelle. An avid Buckeye fan, Dr. Damron enjoys playing the guitar in a band with his college friends, watching/playing any sport, cooking, reading, and attending concerts, especially the Dave Matthews Band and Foo Fighters.

Dr. Washam was introduced to Chiropractic by his mother at the age of 16. She was working for a Chiropractor at the time, experiencing all the benefits that Chiropractic care had to offer, and thus began taking Dr. Washam and his siblings in for regular adjustments. Dr. Washam had been experiencing painful bouts of Strep Throat from the age of 8, which always included a 10 day course of antibiotics. While under Chiropractic care his doctor convinced him to avoid the antibiotics and receive Chiropractic adjustments instead. To his amazement, Dr. Washam’s strep throat symptoms had vanished within three days and he never had an issue from that point forward. He was so astounded by his experience that he fell in love with Chiropractic and decided that was the path for him. He wanted to commit his life to helping people through the power of Chiropractic, just as it had helped him.
Dr. Greg Washam began his college education at the University of Cincinnati, studying biology. After he made the decision to become a Chiropractor, he attended Logan College of Chiropractic in St. Louis, MO. While at Logan, he received his Bachelor of Science in Biology and Life Sciences in 2009. He received his Doctorate of Chiropractic in 2011. Dr. Washam was presented with various awards upon graduation. These included Dean’s List honors, the Senior Intern Assistant Award, and the Award of Excellence from the Division of Research. Dr. Washam and his wife Kassie reside in Mason, Oh with their two daughters, Lillian and Wren. Because of her experience as a patient at DCW she realized she wanted to pursue a career within it. She saw everything she wanted in healthcare at DCW. Finally, a place where patient care really comes first! She comes to DCW with a degree in Nursing and a background in finance. When someone asks her “Why DCW?” she cannot think of one reason why not.
Brooke has a background in business finance and computer technology prior to the start of her medical career. She attended Southern State and obtained an Associate’s Degree in Science, R.N. Sh began working from DCW in December of 2014.
Brooke has five beautiful girls from 15 to 6 years old. She is married to Jamey Snyder who has two boys of his own. She lives on a two acre farm in the country with horses, dogs, cats, and a pot belly pig. Brooke enjoys spending time with her very active family and watching their kids play sports.

Nicole always wanted a career that was focused on helping people. It wasn’t until she drove past the Dayton School of Medical Massage on a daily basis that it became clear what she was meant to do. She enrolled as soon as she could and it has been the best decision she has ever made. She loves the feeling of knowing she has alleviated someone’s pain and possibly made their day better in some way. She had been working alongside chiropractors for over 7 years before joining the DCW team. Before DCW she never really felt her opinions and insights were valued or even asked for, which she felt hindered patient care and the effectiveness of each treatment. At DCW she feels valued and part of a practice that is focused on changing the approach of wellness with cohesive and effective patient care.
Nicole is a graduate of the Dayton School of Medical Massage and obtained her license in 2008. She utilizes Deep Tissue, Swedish and Thai massage techniques to relieve pain, tension, and stress while increasing range of motion and flexibility.
Nicole is married to her husband of 5 years and they one daughter, Rylee, and one child on the way due in September 2016. As a family they enjoy camping, hiking and spending time at the lake during the summer.

Erika Pantona, Insurance Specialist

Erika started coming to DCW in 2010 after spending two years in substantial pain after an injury. She had spent those two years at various specialists and taking medications to simply get up in the morning due to the pain. She was 18 when she found herself facing a major, life altering surgery (SI Fusion) and realized there must be another way. When she began her treatment plan at DCW she started to have days with little or no pain. She stopped taking her medications and realized they had been affecting her overall mood. In 2015 Erika joined the DCW team because they allowed her to live her life once again. She wants to prevent others from living in pain like she did unnecessarily, and to receive the benefits of chiropractic care.
Erika is well versed in the insurance industry with her previous employment at Express Scripts and Anthem.
Erika has two siblings and resides in Liberty Township. In her spare time she enjoys traveling and hiking with her family.

After moving to Ohio in 2010, I was in need of some relief from minor pain associated with working in customer service fields for 15 years. I was interested in seeking alternative forms of therapy and found a chiropractor in our small town. After going for a few visits, the therapy seemed somewhat outdated compared to what I had researched. In talking with my husband, he remembered that he knew someone who was a chiropractor. After just a few visits with Dr. Damron, I definitely noticed a difference in his techniques and style. It was nice to see results and feel like I was being listened to as a patient, not just heard…something you don’t always feel with doctors. After being a patient for several years, the opportunity came about to join the DCW team. It would be something different from what I had done in my past, however I knew my passion for working with people would translate well into helping patients receive the best care possible. I believed in the mission of DCW as a patient, and I am excited to be part of living that mission every day. 
 I am originally from St. Louis, MO. I graduated from the University of Missouri – Columbia with a degree in Secondary Education – Language Arts. I worked in restaurant/catering management for several years before starting a career in retail management and training.
In that position, I met my husband, Matt, who is from Wilmington, OH. After we got married in 2010, I moved to Wilmington. Realizing retail wasn’t where my heart was any longer, I began working as a substitute teacher in the Clinton County area. Matt and I live in Wilmington with our 6 year old German Shepard, Dale. I enjoy camping, boating, riding 4-wheelers, and spending time with family and friends. I love St. Louis Cardinals baseball and am a recently converted Cincinnati Bengals fan.
