The Cervical Spine

May 6, 2016 By Pam Rezai

There are four distinct parts of the human spine – cervical, thoracic, lumbar, and the sacrum/coccyx. Each of these parts contains the nerves responsible for specific functions of the body. For the sake of this blog post, the focus will be on the cervical spine, or neck region, of the body, and the possible symptoms indicating a potential problem.

There are seven vertebrae in the cervical spine. Each of these vertebrae are labeled with the letter C and a number between one and seven. For example, C1 is called the Axis and contains the nerves that provide the blood supply to the head, controls the pituitary gland, scalp, the bones of the face, brain, inner and middle ear, and sympathetic nervous system. When there is a misalignment of the vertebrae and disc in the C1, irritation can occur. This irritation can cause a multitude of symptoms such as:

  • headaches
  • nervousness
  • insomnia
  • head colds
  • high blood pressure
  • migraine headaches
  • nervous breakdowns
  • amnesia
  • chronic fatigue
  • dizziness

Remember, there are 7 vertebrae in the cervical spine and the symptoms listed above are only for the first vertebrae. You can see how the spine is like the main thoroughfare, where everything in the body is connected. Can you see how if you simply treat the symptom, like taking aspirin for a headache, how it is only a temporary fix if the vertebrae are not in alignment? Yes, the aspirin makes the pain go away, but the problem still exists. Yes, the sleep aids help you to control your chronic tiredness, but the true problem has not been addressed. There is no light at the end of the tunnel. If you knew that you could prevent your headaches from happening in the first place, or lower your blood pressure without the aid of prescription medications, or sleep better at night naturally, would you pursue that means?

Chiropractic adjustments realign the spine so the vertebrae are not putting pressure on the nerves that control the various parts of our body. Chiropractic adjustments correct the spine from the wear and tear we put our body through each day. It allows our body to function as it was intended to. It allows us to improve our quality of life and live pain-free. It gives our body the maintenance it deserves.

The Root of Pain

March 8, 2016 By Pam Rezai

A valuable lesson was learned recently about how even the most minor of car accidents can have a big impact on a person’s body. And the impact wasn’t even realized until almost 2 months later. Ironically, the M.D.s who were treating this particular person missed the root of the problem. Instead, they were more focused on treating the symptoms which merely put a band-aid on the problem. The root of the problem still existed and continued to cause pain. As an observer, watching someone suffer and not know the cause can make you feel helpless. So is trying to find a solution, yet only finding roadblocks. However, within 5 minutes of entering Damron Chiropractic & Wellness (DCW) a question was asked that changed everything and shed the light on the root cause of the pain.

This particular question was not asked by any of the other medical professionals seen since the inception of the pain. This question should have been asked by all, but wasn’t. The question?

“What happened 6-8 weeks ago around the time that this pain began?”

The answer given? “A minor car accident.” But when it was said, it was almost with disbelief that that incident could be in any way related to the pain the person was experiencing. The x-rays taken of the affected area revealed vertebrae compression. This area directly correlated with the pain. The solution was to begin spinal decompression to relieve the pressure at the base of the spine, adjustments, electrical stimulation, and dietary supplements for disc and connective tissue health. After one visit, the patient felt better than she had in weeks.

This minor car accident turned out to not be so minor after all. While there was almost no damage done to her vehicle as a result of the collision, her body still absorbed the force of the impact. It was this force that changed the structure of her body. While the change was also very minor, it was enough to affect the nerves in her spine and create the pain she was sporadically experiencing. Sometimes pain that lasted hours at a time, without any rhyme nor reason to its appearance. On the surface it appeared that the pain was caused by something entirely different.

The care received by a Chiropractor is truly unique in the healthcare field. It is within this specialty that cures are found without the use of medications or surgery. It is a holistic approach that utilizes the structure of the body to self-heal.

Imagine the difference in people’s lives if they chose the care of a Chiropractor first when experiencing pain and discomfort? There’s nothing worse than living in the dark, without answers as to what is causing you pain. A person’s quality of life simply starts to diminish.

Together, let’s continue to shine the light on the countless benefits of chiropractic care.

Proactive Self-Care

February 5, 2016 By Pam Rezai

Being proactive means anticipating that something may happen. It keeps us aware. This is very obvious especially at the professional level of any sport like basketball or football. Each player on the team is always proactive. They anticipate where the ball is going to go and take the necessary steps to possess it. Every team invests the time it takes to determine how to win the game based on who they are playing. Their strengths and weaknesses. They are proactive at winning. When it comes to our health, the ideal is the same mentality. Choosing proactive care helps to ensure we stay healthy and well. The alternative puts us constantly on the defense. Reacting to problems as they arise.

One of the benefits to chiropractic care is the overall awareness one has of their body. People will say they know when they need an adjustment because they can tell when their body is out of alignment. They can feel it and because they can feel it they can anticipate it. Being aware of how one’s body feels is part of being proactive with one’s health. Just like that basketball player watching the ball, and knowing exactly when it’s coming his way. He can feel it.

Opting for proactive care, such as that which is offered with a chiropractor, helps to keep you ahead of the game. This holistic approach to your health teaches you how to be more aware of what your body is telling you. It helps you to anticipate the signs of change, an imbalance, a shift. If we can anticipate the onset of something like pain, we can minimize it’s impact on our life. We can address it and prevent it from getting to the point where it’s life altering. Imagine our world without pain? Or minimized substantially.

Educate yourself on you. All the intricate details that make you you. Doing so could save you days, months, even years of living in pain or discomfort. That’s proactive self-care.

Hormones and Weight Loss

December 3, 2015 By Pam Rezai

Did you know that you produce over 50 hormones? Each hormone responsible for a different function within your body. There are multiple glands throughout your body that produce hormones to carry out specific functions. Hormones are chemical messengers that regulate functions like sleep, growth, hunger, metabolism, and reproduction. If a hormone imbalance occurs, our body can be affected with either weight gain or with problems losing weight. As we age, we find that hormones and weight loss are intimately linked throughout our life.

Extra body fat, high levels of stress, poor nutrition, and toxin exposure all can play a role in how well our hormones function. Carrying excess body fat hinders our body’s ability to control our appetite. The hormone responsible for telling us we are full, leptin, is produced by our fat cells. The excess weight we carry hinders our brain’s ability to receive the signal from leptin that we are full. This miscommunication can lead to overeating and additional weight gain.

Living with excess stress can create a situation where your adrenal glands overproduce cortisol. This hormone is responsible for raising your blood pressure and blood sugar levels. It is also responsible for regulating your immune system. High levels of stress can wreak havoc on your body. We may find that sugar cravings increase, feelings of fatigue worsen, and the likelihood of thyroid dysfunction grows.

Fortunately, diagnostic testing is available to help determine the reasons for unexplained weight gain or the inability to lose weight. Getting a complete hormone panel test administered will assess your thyroid, adrenal, and gonadal glands. This will chart your course to return balance to your hormones. Recommendations from your healthcare professional could range from dietary adjustments such as reducing your sugar intake, moderating caffeine and alcohol consumption, and increasing proteins and vegetables in your diet; switching from strength to cardio training; and increasing your sleep and practicing relaxation techniques.

The good news is that hormone balance can be achieved. If you find yourself stuck in the weight loss department, something more may be going on. Knowing what you are up against can turn the tides back in your favor so you can reap the rewards from your efforts to obtain better health and wellness.

Lowering Blood Pressure Through Adjustments

October 29, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

The more we age, the more we hear certain words:

  • cholesterol
  • blood pressure
  • weight
  • diabetes

If we age well, these words cause us no concern.  If we don’t, we go on high alert, monitoring our sugar levels, our weight, and food intake. Healthy aging really requires a team effort. While there are countless steps we can take ourselves to promote healthy aging, like eating a balanced diet and staying active, having the support of a team of healthcare professionals to keep you on the right path is helpful. Research is continuing to suggest that chiropractic adjustments have blood pressure lowering benefits. This is yet another significant advantage to adding a chiropractor to your healthcare team.

One of the keys to healthy aging is minimizing our dependence on pharmaceuticals. The reason? Pharmaceuticals simply mask the root of the problem. Granted, if we have high blood pressure and take a blood pressure lowering drug, we will lower our blood pressure. But why was our blood pressure high to begin with? What are the side effects of taking a particular pharmaceutical? How much do these side effects negatively impact our lives? If we make no other changes to our lifestyle other than taking a pill each day have we really addressed the root cause? No, we have not. It’s true that when a doctor prescribes a particular medicine, like one for lowering blood pressure, that there is also the expectation that the patient will also take other steps to improve their overall health. Steps like eating a healthy diet and exercising. However, the reality is that we have a safety net in place with the prescription medication. Even if we aren’t making the best decisions each day to encourage a healthy lifestyle, the medication will pick up the slack.

The reality is that prescription medications should be viewed as a temporary bridge between where we are and where we want to go. If we can avoid it, they should never become a permanent fixture in our lives. Rather, we should take the steps necessary to improve our lives to the point where we no longer need medications like those to lower our blood pressure. Adding a chiropractor to your healthcare team can be a pivotal step in getting you where you want to go in terms of better health. Lowering blood pressure and pulse rate through chiropractic adjustments are just one of the countless health benefits to chiropractic care.

Continue to increase your arsenal of resources to promote your healthy aging. Not only for you, but for those you love as well.

Choosing Your Chiropractor

August 7, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

Choosing a Chiropractor is not unlike choosing any other healthcare professional.  It’s a very personal relationship where you truly feel he or she has your best interests at heart.  But there are other things to consider as well because you are essentially advocating for yourself.  Good health is our greatest asset and it should never be taken for granted.  It needs to be earned through daily effort.  Partnering with a Chiropractor can help you achieve and maintain this asset throughout your life.  The key, however, is making sure you chose wisely.

There are many false stereotypes regarding Chiropractors, just as there are for other professions such as lawyers and politicians.  Common sense tells us that we mustn’t judge a book by its cover, but that’s exactly what we do.  We take hearsay and turn it into fact without investing the time to find out for ourselves the truth.  The end result?  Lost opportunity to benefit from the care and expertise from a committed professional.  Rushing to a snap judgement means we’d rather follow what another says.  Relying on unsubstantiated claims can have a negative impact on our lives.  Take, for example, the marketing of several consumer goods over the decades:  Tab, Olestra, nicotine, aspartame, MSG, and GMOs.  We took for granted that because it was available, it was good for us.  Years later we learned we were wrong.

Chiropractors are doctors that specialize in the musculoskeletal and nervous systems.  They practice a drug-free, hands-on approach to healthcare.  With broad diagnostic skills, they are trained to recommend therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises, in addition to nutritional, dietary, and lifestyle counseling.  They are also best known for providing spinal adjustments to help restore joint mobility that causes inflammation and pain.

But what other services does a chiropractor provide?

  • Diagnostic imaging
  • Nutritional supplements
  • Clinical examinations
  • Patient education
  • Electrical muscle stimulation
  • Transcutaneous electrical muscle stimulators (TENS)
  • Heat and ice therapy

However, did you know that there are also other value-added services that you should be looking for when choosing your chiropractor?  Here are a few questions to consider as you explore your options:

  • Is massage incorporated with treatment?
  • What about rehabilitation?
  • How much time does the Chiropractor spend with each patient?
  • How are patients educated on achieving and maintaining wellness?
  • Is decompression as part of the treatment options?

Other ways to educate yourself on the philosophies of a particular Chiropractor is to check social media.  Are there recent testimonials?  Pictures of the practice, the doctor, the other team members?  What about reviews?  What is the general feeling regarding the practice?

When it comes to your health, never settle.  A little homework can go a long way!

Trigger Points (Part II)

July 7, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

Now that you have familiarized yourself with trigger points, let’s look at how they manifest themselves in your body.  In other words, what are the symptoms indicating trigger points and the associated referral pain?  What can be done to help correct the situation?

First, it’s important to note that there are two types of trigger points – active and latent.

  • Active trigger points typically have referral pain and occur due to some injury to the muscle.  This injury can be trauma related, or it can also be the result of repetitive use, poor posture, or nerve irritation.  There is also both pain at rest and the area is tender to the touch.
  • Latent trigger points are more localized, causing a limited range of motion and weakness to the area affected.  It may or may not be painful to the touch.

It is not uncommon that active trigger points become latent, or that latent become active.  Many people may believe that when pain returns after long absence it’s a new injury.  In reality, the problem was only laying dormant and something happened to re-aggravate the same injury.

Symptoms of a trigger point can include:

  • limited range of motion
  • pain
  • dizziness
  • weakness
  • loss of coordination
  • buckling of the knees
  • ringing in the ears
  • tingling
  • urinary frequency
  • muscle fatigue
  • sweating
  • tearing of the eyes
  • tension headaches

Fortunately, there are ways to correct the situation and bring the body back into balance.  One is with trigger point massage therapy, which helps to address the knot of constricted muscles that are causing the pain.  Another option is through chiropractic adjustments.  Many times a misalignment in the skeletal system can cause undo stress on certain muscles.  Only by putting things back into alignment can this be remedied.  Ideally, the best course of treatment involves both massage and adjustments, plus strengthening the affected muscles.  Damron Chiropractic & Wellness is unique in that it offers all three therapies under one roof.  Our highly trained team of professionals work in unison to address the needs of every patient that walks through our doors.  Our goal with this approach is to get you out of pain and back to wellness, so you can get back to enjoying your life once again!

Chiropractic Relief for Migraines

May 29, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

It might come as a surprise, but migraines are a very common disease in the U.S. affecting 36 million people – including children.  This debilitating condition causes not only pain, on one or both sides of the head, but also symptoms like:

  • visual disturbances
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • dizziness
  • extreme sensitivity to sound, light, touch, and smell
  • tingling or numbness in the extremities or face.

The quality of life for those suffering from migraines is greatly affected, however there is good news!  A Doctor of Chiropractic has been shown to provide much needed relief, all in a relatively short period of time.  For anyone who has experienced a migraine, every second is like an hour, so time is of the essence.

In February of 2000, the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) conducted a study to “access the medical efficacy of chiropractic manipulative therapy in the treatment of migraines.”  It was a randomized controlled trial over six months that collected data in three sessions – two months before treatment, two months during treatment, and two months after treatment.  There were 127 participants in this study that were between the ages of 10 and 70 years of age.  Each suffered at least one migraine per month, which is the International Headache Society standard when diagnosing a migraine.  During the treatment phase of the trial, the maximum number of adjustments a participant could receive was 16.  The results at the conclusion were overwhelmingly positive:

  • There was a statistically significant improvement in migraine frequency duration.
  • There was an obvious reduction in a debilitating symptoms due to a migraine.
  • With less migraines there was less need for medication.
  • 22% of the participants reported more than a 90% reduction of migraines during the two months of treatment.
  • 50% reported a significant improvement in the “morbidity” of each episode.

This is fantastic news to those who suffer from chronic migraines.  There is now hope that a person can reclaim their quality of life once again.  The key is finding a reputable Chiropractor that can alleviate the duration, frequency, and severity of migraines in a way that is non-invasive and without pharmaceuticals.

Chronic Inflammation

March 27, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

When we think of inflammation, the first image that comes to mind is probably a minor injury we suffered that became infected like a splinter or skinned knee.  The area around the wound got red and was tender to the touch.  It felt hot and hurt.  We knew that with proper treatment the inflammation would subside and the wound would heal.  But inflammation can also take place inside our body as well, which doesn’t leave obvious visual signs like the splinter or skinned knee.  However, being aware of the symptoms of inflammation can help you remedy the situation.

According to Medical News Today, “inflammation is the body’s attempt at self-protection; the aim being to remove harmful stimuli, including damaged cells, irritants, or pathogens – and begin the healing process.” (Feb. 2015)  Acute inflammation is the wound example above which is short in duration. Chronic inflammation can last months or even years due to the body’s failure to eliminate the cause of the problem.  What are some conditions that cause chronic inflammation?

  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Asthma
  • Chronic Sinusitis
  • Crohn’s Disease
  • Allergies
  • Diabetes

So how would you know that your body is suffering from chronic inflammation?  What are some of the symptoms?

  • Persistant pain in the joints or muscles
  • Worsening allergies or asthma
  • High blood pressure or blood sugar
  • Irritable Bowl Syndrome (IBS)
  • Ulcers
  • Constant fatigue or exhaustion
  • Skin problems or bloodshot eyes

According to a 2012 article in SCD Lifestyle, “Inflammation becomes chronic when it stops being an acute response” (i.e. the body’s reaction to a cut or bruise) “and remains a constant low-level physiological response.”  It continues by stating, “Chronic inflammation is when your body no longer has the ability to turn off the inflammatory response and it starts damaging healthy tissue in your body.” But guess what?  Chronic inflammation can be preventable.  Yes, it’s true – preventable by YOU.  Our lifestyle and the choices we make significantly impact our body.  A hectic schedule, high pressure job, lack of sleep, high fat foods, weight gain, sugary foods and drinks, daily consumption of alcohol – are some of the choices, when made each and every day, cause our body to become chronically inflamed. Only for the simple fact that it is trying to protect YOU.

In addition to improving your lifestyle and choices,  there are other changes you can make to reduce and eliminate chronic inflammation:

  • Taking Fish Oil
  • Getting 8 hours of sleep
  • Spinal adjustments
  • Exercise
  • A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean meat and fish
  • Supplements like vitamin D, magnesium, and turmeric

You can stop the war your body is waging against itself.  Be aware of your choices and how they really impact you.  Allow your body to begin the healing process so you can enjoy the benefits of living without chronic inflammation.

Sciatic Nerve Pain

March 13, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

Pain does not discriminate, we all fall victim to it at some point in our life.  Until that point happens, we tend to live in a state of ignorance, because learning about pain is irrelevant to our life.  Why know about something that does not affect us?  Well, knowledge is not only power, it is also a form of preventative maintenance.  It’s like telling your child not to touch the hot stove top because they will get burned.  We do this to prevent a problem in the future.  We give our child the knowledge (or the power) to make a wise decision when entering the kitchen and someone is cooking – don’t touch the stove top!  As we get older, we should not stop there.  Educating ourselves on various health issues and performing preventative maintenance helps us to live in wellness.  We then have the power to know what to do when a situation, like pain, presents itself rather than living with it.  We can get back to good health because we have the knowledge to do something about it.

Sciatica or sciatic pain is something many of us have heard of, yet still may not fully understand.  The purpose of this post is to shed more light on this common source of pain, especially in older adults, so action can be taken sooner versus later.  The sciatic nerve is the major nerve extending from the lower end of the spinal cord down the back of the thigh, and dividing above the knee joint, where it then supplies the entire area of the lower leg, ankle and foot.   It is the largest nerve in the human body.  But what can affect the sciatic nerve and cause pain:

  • A Lumbar Herniated Disc
  • Degenerative Disc Disease (breakdown of the discs which act as cushions between the vertebrae)
  • Isthmic Spondylolisthesis (a condition in which one vertebrae slips over another)
  • Lumbar Spinal Stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal in the lower back)
  • Piriformis Syndrome
  • Sacroiliac Joint Disfunction (improper movement of the joints at the bottom of the spine that connect the sacrum to the pelvis)
  • Pregnancy

In addition to pain, other symptoms can present themselves if the sciatic nerve is affected like tingling, numbness, pressure, muscle spasms or cramping anywhere in the leg, and a prickly sensation that radiates down the leg.  Leg or foot weakness can also occur as well as a burning sensation.  Some may confuse pain, tingling, numbness, etc. of the hip, leg, knee, or foot pain coming from those respective areas.  In actuality, it is possible that it is originating from pressure or irritation on the sciatic nerve in the low back.  The good news is that sciatic nerve pain can be corrected.  A Doctor of Chiropractic can treat with decompression therapy, spinal adjustments,  transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), deep tissue massage, myofascial release techniques, and stretching.

You do not need to live with sciatic nerve pain.  And now that you know what it feels like and what causes it, you can take the necessary steps to correct it if it should it ever become an unwelcome guest in your life.

She was 18 when she found herself facing a major, life altering surgery (SI Fusion) and realized there must be another way. When she began her treatment plan at DCW she started to have days with little or no pain. She stopped taking her medications and realized they had been affecting her overall mood. In 2015 Erika joined the DCW team because they allowed her to live her life once again. She wants to prevent others from living in pain like she did unnecessarily, and to receive the benefits of chiropractic care.
Erika is well versed in the insurance industry with her previous employment at Express Scripts and Anthem.

After moving to Ohio in 2010, I was in need of some relief from minor pain associated with working in customer service fields for 15 years. I was interested in seeking alternative forms of therapy and found a chiropractor in our small town. After going for a few visits, the therapy seemed somewhat outdated compared to what I had researched. In talking with my husband, he remembered that he knew someone who was a chiropractor. After just a few visits with Dr. Damron, I definitely noticed a difference in his techniques and style. It was nice to see results and feel like I was being listened to as a patient, not just heard…something you don’t always feel with doctors. After being a patient for several years, the opportunity came about to join the DCW team. It would be something different from what I had done in my past, however I knew my passion for working with people would translate well into helping patients receive the best care possible. I believed in the mission of DCW as a patient, and I am excited to be part of living that mission every day.
I am originally from St. Louis, MO. I graduated from the University of Missouri – Columbia with a degree in Secondary Education – Language Arts. I worked in restaurant/catering management for several years before starting a career in retail management and training.
In that position, I met my husband, Matt, who is from Wilmington, OH. After we got married in 2010, I moved to Wilmington. Realizing retail wasn’t where my heart was any longer, I began working as a substitute teacher in the Clinton County area. Matt and I live in Wilmington with our 6 year old German Shepard, Dale. I enjoy camping, boating, riding 4-wheelers, and spending time with family and friends. I love St. Louis Cardinals baseball and am a recently converted Cincinnati Bengals fan.
