Degenerative Disc Disease

July 27, 2017 By Pam Rezai Leave a Comment

According to the Arthritis Foundation, most adults over the age of 60 have degenerative disc disease. This condition occurs when the discs between each vertebrae in the spine lose their ability to effectively absorb shock. As we age, our spinal discs, which have a high water content, begin to dehydrate lessening their ability to function. While age is the most common factor causing degenerative disk disease, other factors can contribute too. Factors such as daily activities, sports, and injuries.

While the effects of this degeneration are different for everyone, some people do experience back and/or neck pain. However, there can be other symptoms typically in conjunction with the pain:

  • back pain that extends to the legs
  • neck pain that extends to the arms and hands
  • tingling and numbness in these extremities
  • headaches
  • reduced range of motion

Unfortunately, there is very little blood supply to the spinal discs. So if a disc is weakened or damaged, it cannot heal itself as other body parts can. When the disc continues to deteriorate, that is when a person can begin to experience the symptoms above.

A chiropractor that offers onsite X-rays can determine the level of compression between vertebrae. Treatment can include sessions of time on a decompression table. This device very slowly extends the neck and/or back, relieving the pressure between vertebrae. Relieving the pressure reduces pain, but most importantly can help reduce inflammation around the nerves. Over time, this treatment, in conjunction with chiropractic adjustments, can stop the progression of degenerative disc disease, eliminate pain, and improve flexibility. The goal is to attempt to avoid surgery, however, in some cases, surgery is recommended after all other options have been exhausted. A chiropractor would then refer the person to a specialist for an MRI.

Getting older does not mean settling for aches and pains. You do have the option to grow older pain-free, but the choice is yours.

Myth #7: Chiropractors Only Treat Back Pain

April 21, 2017 By Pam Rezai 1 Comment

It’s natural to associate seeing a chiropractor when experiencing back pain. This medical professional works with the spine, or back. Yet, what most people don’t realize is that back pain is only one of many ailments and conditions that a chiropractor can treat.

Think of a chiropractor as you would your primary care doctor or pediatrician. You don’t see either just for the flu or seasonal allergies. You visit these two doctors for various reasons. The same is true for a chiropractor. Granted the spine, or back, connects the body. So, it makes sense to only think of back pain when seeing a chiropractor. But, because the spine connects the body, a chiropractor treats the entire musculoskeletal system.

If we look at the Grey’s Anatomy “Chart of Body & Anatomy” we can see that the spine is comprised of vertebrae. Each vertebrae connects nerves to specific parts of the body. For example, vertebrae 1C in the cervical spine contains the nerves connected to the head, brain, middle and inner ear, and the sympathetic nervous system. Irritated nerves in 1C can create symptoms such as headaches, insomnia, migraines, and high blood pressure. Relieving that irritation with chiropractic adjustments alleviates the symptoms. This is one of the biggest differences between how a chiropractor treats an ailment and how a medical doctor treats one.

Traditional medical doctors typically treat the symptoms. In other words, if are suffering migraines, you may only receive a prescription for pain relief medicine. The symptom may be addressed, but not the cause of it. With chiropractic care, the cause is determined and addressed, not just the symptoms. And not with the use of prescription medications either. The goal is to eliminate the cause of them problem, not just mask the symptoms.

Chiropractors treat the entire body, not just back pain. Think of it this way, your spine is the central piece that connects your entire body. So, whether you have pain in your shoulder, hip, neck, or back, a chiropractor can provide you the care you need.

Myth #3: Chiropractic Care Is Only for Adults

April 7, 2017 By Pam Rezai Leave a Comment

Myth #3: Chiropractic care is only for adults.

In many fields of care there exists a separation between adult and children. Whether it is dental care, hospital care, general medical care, or even skin care. There is nothing wrong with the approach. For example, sometimes a dentist just doesn’t want to deal with a squirming child as a patient. Or perhaps a doctor prefers to work with children rather than adults. And while the approach to an adult and a child are different, fundamentally, the needs are the same. Both have teeth, a body, and skin.

A chiropractor should not be synonymous with adult care. Rather, a chiropractor should be synonymous with family care. That’s right. Family care. From a pregnant mother, to a newborn, toddler, teenager, adult, and senior citizen. And while the techniques might be slightly different depending on the age of the patient, the end goal is always the same – optimal spinal health.

Since chiropractors have the ability to effectively work with both the young and old, we should address the benefits for each age group. First of all, let us begin with the benefits of chiropractic care to the pregnant woman:

  • providing pain relief to the back, neck and joints;
  • helping to control symptoms of nausea;
  • and potentially reducing the time of labor and delivery.

For the newborn and infant, the benefits of chiropractic care include:

  • better sleep patterns,
  • healthy brain development,
  • and a strengthened immune system.

Toddlers can benefit with:

  • behavioral improvements,
  • proactive treatment for acute trauma from falls and accidental injuries,
  • and with correcting bed-wetting.

When the child becomes a teenager, regular chiropractic visits can help with:

  • recovery from a sports injury,
  • reversing text neck,
  • and improving poor posture.

While as an adult, maintaining good health is the ideal. Adjustments assist with this by:

  • reducing headaches,
  • stimulating the immune system,
  • and lowering stress.

Finally, for our senior years, visits to the chiropractor are beneficial for the following reasons:

  • to improve mobility,
  • to provide better balance and coordination,
  • and help with pain relief.

In conclusion, chiropractic care is truly for everyone. And, yet, while every patient has specific needs, the treatment given is modified to match them. This is the perfect partnership for an individual to live a healthy life.

Seems like this is one field that does not need to separate the care between an adult and child. As a result, you get all the care you need for your entire family under one roof.

Text Neck

February 2, 2017 By Pam Rezai Leave a Comment

On average, the human head weighs between 10 to 12 pounds. Proper posture ensures the weight is evenly distributed at the top of the spine. With the advent of technology and mobile devices, we find ourselves with a posture epidemic. One that has shifted the alignment in such a way that has created a set of symptoms we now call “text neck.” As our head moves forward and leans down it increases the strain of the weight of our head on the rest of our body. Thus creating a domino effect of pain and discomfort as our body compensates for this change in posture.

What we may not realize is that hunching even slightly to look at our mobile device increases the strain our body must bear. For example, looking down only at a 15 degree angle increases the strain on our neck by 27 pounds. Likewise, based on the picture above, a 30 degree angle strains the neck with 40 pounds, and so on. Because we are so accustomed to this poor posture, it may be difficult to imagine what this strain feels like. To help, we give our patients a 10 pound ball to hold with their elbow resting on a table. As they move the weighted ball forward it becomes increasingly difficult to hold it. Eventually, they are unable to any longer.

The point is this, we are creating undo stress on our neck, spine, and muscles. This stress creates compression between the vertebrae which then leads to chronic neck and shoulder pain, in addition to headaches. Because of the trends in technology, many people do not even realize the cause of these symptoms. The good news is that we have the power to correct text neck with a few simple exercises and being more mindful of what we are doing.

First, pay attention to where you are holding your device. Raise it up so you are looking straight at it versus down. If you are looking at a laptop or desktop, do what you can to prevent yourself from looking down at it. Adjust the height of your chair or table. To help relieve the stain on your neck and shoulders you can also do this simple exercise of squeezing your shoulder blades together. You can also work on keeping your ears over your shoulders as much as possible throughout the day, too. Text neck is also treated by a chiropractor and massage therapist, as well. Regular visits to both will help to keep your body in alignment, improve posture, and eliminate any pain you might be experiencing.

Technology will always be a part of our world. Rather than modifying our body to suit technology, we must make technology modify to suit us. If we don’t our body will let us know with symptoms of pain and discomfort.

Chronic Diseases

May 27, 2016 By Pam Rezai Leave a Comment

In November of 2015, Prevention magazine had an article titled “6 Things Chiropractors Can Help With – And What They Can’t.” The overall message of the article gave very compelling reasons to see a chiropractor beyond neck and back pain. However, it missed the mark on what they cannot treat. With all the misinformation out there regarding the field of chiropractic, it’s time to set the record straight. A Chiropractor can help treat chronic diseases.

First, let’s address the 6 things are that Doctors of Chiropractic can help with:

  1. Lower Back Pain
  2. Neck Pain
  3. Pregnancy Pain
  4. Digestive Issues
  5. Headaches
  6. Blood Pressure

The first two are the most obvious reasons people choose to see a chiropractor. But what about the other four?

A pregnant woman is told to avoid anything that would harm her developing baby. However, the pain that accompanies most pregnancies, especially the further along a mother is, can make her think twice about how to alleviate it. A Chiropractor can use the Webster technique to realign the pelvis. This can successfully address the pain associated with the lower back and sciatica without the use of potentially harmful medications.

Now what about digestive issues? The nerves in the thoracic spine are connected to the digestive system. A misalignment in this region can cause symptoms from indigestion, heartburn, ulcers, bloating and gas. Spinal adjustments can keep a person’s digestive systems functioning as it should. No more digestive issues.

Next on the list are headaches, which is a common problem experienced by many individuals. The cervical spine contains the nerves responsible for this type of pain if there is an irritation.  A chiropractor can restore proper alignment to offset this interference, many times eliminating the headaches and migraines all together.

Lastly, let’s talk blood pressure. There is a University of Chicago study that took 50 people who had both high blood pressure and neck misalignment. With only one chiropractic adjustment, their blood pressure dropped the same as if they took two blood pressure medications at the same time? That is truly an amazing outcome!

Now for the areas that a chiropractor cannot help with, according to the article. It’s true that a medical doctor is better trained at treating acute emergencies, infections, fractures, tumors and injuries that require surgery. But, just like a medical doctor, a chiropractor can and does help with chronic diseases. The difference is in their approaches. Many times a chronic disease like diabetes, heart disease, or high cholesterol is treated with prescription medications by a medical doctor. A chiropractor, on the other hand, will take a more holistic approach and work with the patient to make lifestyle changes to address the chronic disease. This is addressing the root of the problem rather than the symptoms. Which in the end, resolves the symptoms and the problem as well.

The Cervical Spine

May 6, 2016 By Pam Rezai

There are four distinct parts of the human spine – cervical, thoracic, lumbar, and the sacrum/coccyx. Each of these parts contains the nerves responsible for specific functions of the body. For the sake of this blog post, the focus will be on the cervical spine, or neck region, of the body, and the possible symptoms indicating a potential problem.

There are seven vertebrae in the cervical spine. Each of these vertebrae are labeled with the letter C and a number between one and seven. For example, C1 is called the Axis and contains the nerves that provide the blood supply to the head, controls the pituitary gland, scalp, the bones of the face, brain, inner and middle ear, and sympathetic nervous system. When there is a misalignment of the vertebrae and disc in the C1, irritation can occur. This irritation can cause a multitude of symptoms such as:

  • headaches
  • nervousness
  • insomnia
  • head colds
  • high blood pressure
  • migraine headaches
  • nervous breakdowns
  • amnesia
  • chronic fatigue
  • dizziness

Remember, there are 7 vertebrae in the cervical spine and the symptoms listed above are only for the first vertebrae. You can see how the spine is like the main thoroughfare, where everything in the body is connected. Can you see how if you simply treat the symptom, like taking aspirin for a headache, how it is only a temporary fix if the vertebrae are not in alignment? Yes, the aspirin makes the pain go away, but the problem still exists. Yes, the sleep aids help you to control your chronic tiredness, but the true problem has not been addressed. There is no light at the end of the tunnel. If you knew that you could prevent your headaches from happening in the first place, or lower your blood pressure without the aid of prescription medications, or sleep better at night naturally, would you pursue that means?

Chiropractic adjustments realign the spine so the vertebrae are not putting pressure on the nerves that control the various parts of our body. Chiropractic adjustments correct the spine from the wear and tear we put our body through each day. It allows our body to function as it was intended to. It allows us to improve our quality of life and live pain-free. It gives our body the maintenance it deserves.

Eating Wrong

December 30, 2015 By Pam Rezai

Every year we know it’s coming. We try to prepare for it, both mentally and physically. Yet despite our best efforts, we tend to throw caution to the wind and get swept away by the many delectable sweets and treats throughout the Holidays. As we get older, that the time of year between Thanksgiving and New Year’s can impact us even more so if we make too many poor eating choices. Eating wrong, if we have been eating right, can do more than add a few pounds to our body.

When we are young, our body’s ability to rebound from poor eating choices is rather quick. Fast forward a few decades and it’s simply no longer the case, especially if our body is use to a well balanced diet. Several days of delicious but fattening desserts and high calorie cocktails can wreak havoc on us. Our body is suddenly overwhelmed with less than desirable nutrients, in amounts that far exceed what it can handle. It’s like a perfect storm. And when our body reaches its tipping point, we then start to feel the impact of our poor eating choices. We may feel bloated, have an upset stomach, feel sluggish, or experience headaches.

These symptoms are the signs indicating that we took things a bit too far. It’s our warning that our body is not happy with the food we gave it. Your body knows when it’s happy, knows when it feels good, knows when it gets what it needs to thrive. It also knows what it doesn’t need. If we take the time to listen to all that it is telling us we can learn so much. We can know if we are really hungry or simply bored. We can know if we overindulged. We can learn when to give our body a little extra TLC if we happen let temptations get the best of us during the Holidays.

Our body is incredibly smart. Listen. It has so much to say to you.

The Healing Crisis

December 17, 2015 By Pam Rezai

“Two steps forward, one step back.”

This familiar saying seems to capture the true essence of healing. At Damron Chiropractic & Wellness (DCW), healing is our top priority. However, healing is a process that not only takes time but also involves various stages. The stage that surprises our patients the most is called the Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction. This is also called the healing crisis stage. While it might seem odd to have the words healing and crisis connected, this is exactly what is happening within the body. Healing actually means the body is eliminating the toxins that are existing within it. The healing crisis is the temporary worsening of symptoms as the body goes through the process of getting well. It is normal and to be expected. Unfortunately, if we are unaware of this stage in our healing we might think something is wrong. We then want to stop whatever it is we are doing to heal, and then find ourselves once again right back where we started – in pain.

At DCW we are big advocates of education. We believe that with knowledge comes the power to transform your life. All to often it is misconceptions, or a lack of understanding, that leaves people living with pain and discomfort. Many times, the people who walk through our doors have tried to address their pain in other ways, without success. From the onset, every team member at DCW works to identify, address, educate, and resolve whatever issue brought that person to us.

When it comes to healing, knowing that you will inevitably take “two steps forward, and one step back” at some point in the process is an important sign that you are on the right path. It means your body is responding well to the treatment you are receiving. Your body is working hard to heal, and sometimes that means experiencing additional symptoms such as nausea, poor coordination, headaches, and fatigue. The good news is that this is a temporary situation and one that resolves in only a couple of days.

Remember, healing is a process. It doesn’t happen overnight. It requires work. Your body is equipped to know what it’s supposed to do. Give it the room it needs to heal itself. Your body will thank you and you will benefit because you will feel the difference.

Identifying a Concussion

September 8, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

An injury to your brain can be deadly, especially because the injury is typically something you cannot physically see. The person experiencing the injury may not even know how extensive it is and may exhibit normal behaviors to those around them. This does not mean the injury is minimal or that the person is okay. In fact, of all injuries a person can sustain, one to the brain can be the most deadly because of its elusive nature. A brain injury, or concussion, happens when a person sustains a blow to the head, or suffers an injury that jars or shakes the brain inside the skull. Knowing the signs to look for after someone experiences this injury can mean the difference between life and death.

Football is a national past-time. We love it at all levels of play. Recently, there has been a lot of media coverage regarding the concussions sustained by NFL players and the debilitating side effects that have handicapped them for life. But, a concussion can happen at any age, and not just with football either. A fall on the ice, a collision with another player during a soccer game, a hit in the head with a lacrosse stick can all cause a concussion.

Surprisingly, only 10% of concussions actually result in loss of consciousness. If that’s the reality, what happens the other 90% of the time? To help you identify whether or not someone has suffered a concussion, here is a list of common symptoms:

  • headaches/migraines
  • visual problems
  • light sensitivity
  • noise sensitivity
  • nausea
  • dizziness
  • attention problems
  • trouble with memory
  • fogginess
  • fatigue
  • trouble sleeping
  • sleeping less than normal
  • sleeping more than normal
  • increased emotions
  • sadness
  • irritability
  • nervousness

To be safe, it’s always best to seek medical treatment with any head injury. And although a concussion is considered a “manageable injury” by healthcare professionals, the key is early detection and proper treatment.

Erika Pantona, Insurance Specialist

Why DCWProfessional Experience Personal Information
Erika started coming to DCW in 2010 after spending two years in substantial pain after an injury. She had spent those two years at various specialists and taking medications to simply get up in the morning due to the pain. She was 18 when she found herself facing a major, life altering surgery (SI Fusion) and realized there must be another way. When she began her treatment plan at DCW she started to have days with little or no pain. She stopped taking her medications and realized they had been affecting her overall mood. In 2015 Erika joined the DCW team because they allowed her to live her life once again. She wants to prevent others from living in pain like she did unnecessarily, and to receive the benefits of chiropractic care.
Erika is well versed in the insurance industry with her previous employment at Express Scripts and Anthem.
Erika has two siblings and resides in Liberty Township. In her spare time she enjoys traveling and hiking with her family.

Amy Faris, Patient Care Coordinator

Why DCWProfessional Experience Personal Information
After moving to Ohio in 2010, I was in need of some relief from minor pain associated with working in customer service fields for 15 years. I was interested in seeking alternative forms of therapy and found a chiropractor in our small town. After going for a few visits, the therapy seemed somewhat outdated compared to what I had researched. In talking with my husband, he remembered that he knew someone who was a chiropractor. After just a few visits with Dr. Damron, I definitely noticed a difference in his techniques and style. It was nice to see results and feel like I was being listened to as a patient, not just heard…something you don’t always feel with doctors. After being a patient for several years, the opportunity came about to join the DCW team. It would be something different from what I had done in my past, however I knew my passion for working with people would translate well into helping patients receive the best care possible. I believed in the mission of DCW as a patient, and I am excited to be part of living that mission every day.
I am originally from St. Louis, MO. I graduated from the University of Missouri – Columbia with a degree in Secondary Education – Language Arts. I worked in restaurant/catering management for several years before starting a career in retail management and training.
In that position, I met my husband, Matt, who is from Wilmington, OH. After we got married in 2010, I moved to Wilmington. Realizing retail wasn’t where my heart was any longer, I began working as a substitute teacher in the Clinton County area. Matt and I live in Wilmington with our 6 year old German Shepard, Dale. I enjoy camping, boating, riding 4-wheelers, and spending time with family and friends. I love St. Louis Cardinals baseball and am a recently converted Cincinnati Bengals fan.
