Preventing Pelvic Floor Disorders

November 6, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

The trend seems to be that we take how our body functions for granted until we get much older. With over 600 muscles, 206 bones, 22 internal organs, and 100 trillion cells, there is a lot going on inside of us simultaneously. Inevitably, we reach a point in our life where something goes wrong, we tear a ligament, break a bone, fall, or become ill. We realize then, what we actually knew all along, that we are human after all and normal “wear and tear” do occur. One area that is often misunderstood and under-appreciated is our pelvic floor. Pelvic floor disorders typically occur when we get much older. It’s something that we also take for granted, too. For the pelvic floor are the muscles that hold our pelvic organs in place and keep them functioning as they should, which is what we really want after all.

The pelvic floor muscles run from your pubic bone in the front to the base of your spine in the back. As you get older, these muscles can get weaker, especially for women who have had children. These weakened muscles can cause problems that interfere with living your life. Problems such as urinary incontinence, which is the inability to hold all the urine in so a person experiences leakage; reduced sensitivity during sex; and the risk of developing pelvic organ prolapse, which occurs when one or more of the pelvic organs bulge into an area it doesn’t belong. Strong pelvic floor muscles also assist with preventing lower back pain, inflammation, and instability or dysfunction.

Both men and women can prevent the weakening of our pelvic floor muscles through awareness and targeted exercises. The good news is that strengthening this area requires minimal effort. There are two actions – squeeze and lift. First squeeze your pelvic floor as you would to hold a full bladder and then lift it at the same time and hold for 5 to 10 seconds. This is called activating your pelvic floor. Doing this throughout your day will gradually strengthen this area of your body.

Pilates is another way to strengthen your pelvic floor and prevent disorders. This form of exercise is highly effective at reducing lower back pain and strengthening the pelvic floor. Be proactive with your health. Don’t wait until you experience the symptoms of a pelvic floor disorder. Staying on the offense will keep you living the life you want.

Online Self-Diagnosing Hazards

September 29, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

The accessibility of information today is astounding. So much available at our fingertips. Have a question? Google it. Need directions? MapQuest it. What about when it comes to your health? Have you ever had a question regarding a particular symptom you are experiencing? Did you go online to determine what you have and whether or not you should seek medical attention? Or have you ever thought something peculiar was going on with your body and wanted to see if it was something you should be concerned about? While searching online for answers might put our mind at ease, there are many hazards with online self diagnosing.  New research is revealing how inaccurate the online information is especially as it relates to symptom checkers, like WebMD or the Mayo Clinic.

Just this year, Harvard Medical School published a study evaluating the accuracy of these online tools. The results were surprising considering the millions a time a year we utilize symptom checker websites. The study found that only half the time did the symptom checker provide the correct diagnosis. Half. In order to reach this conclusion, the researchers used 45 fake patient symptoms. When the top 3 ailments were provided, only 51% of the cases had the correct diagnosis within the top 3. Plus, only 34% of the time, the online symptom checkers had the correct ailment as the first most likely option.

Another hazard with online self-diagnosing is knowing when to really seek medical attention. If there is only an accuracy rate of 50%, then you may go to the doctor without really needing to. Fear is likely the motivating factor here, suggested the researchers. Fear of something more serious happening with that person’s health. Many times simply seeing the list of potential illnesses is enough to create profound fear and anxiety in an individual.

While there is certainly some benefit to using these online self diagnosing tools, we cannot place all our faith in them. They can provide some insight and guidelines, but it does not substitute the benefits of interacting in person with a doctor. You know your body best. Listen to it. Advocate for yourself when you suspect something is wrong, but don’t jump to conclusions. Another option you might consider is building a relationship with a Doctor of Chiropractic. Most, if not all, practices welcome walk-ins. If you are a regular patient, walking in to talk to your Chiropractor when you have a troubling symptom can give you the peace of mind you need, without being misled by an inaccurate online self-diagnosis.

National Chiropractic Health Month

September 25, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

Did you know that October is National Chiropractor Month? Each year the month of October is designated to this medical specialty and its countless benefits. There is also a theme selected each year by the American Chiropractic Association (ACA), and this year it’s “#PainFreeNation.”

According to a 2011 report by the Institute of Medicine, approximately 100 million Americans are affected by chronic pain, with “an estimated cost to American society of at least $560-$635 billion.” The result of this pain is the overuse of medications such as codeine, Vicodin, oxycodone, and Percocet. However, the problem is that these painkillers mask the problem plus increase the risk of death due to overdose. So, October is dedicated to helping Americans live pain-free without the over-dependence on prescription medications – “#PainFreeNation.”

The field of chiropractic is focused on the wellness of the entire person using a non-drug approach. Chiropractors look beyond the symptoms and work with the musculoskeletal and nervous systems to get to the root of the problem. Practices like Damron Chiropractic & Wellness (DCW) even take it a step further by incorporating therapeutic massage, rehabilitation, and nutrition into the treatment plan, as well. The trend today is quickly moving in the direction of a conservative, multidisciplinary approach when it comes to the treatment of pain. This couldn’t come at a better time because the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) had called the abuse of prescription pain medications as an “epidemic.”

In January of this year, a paramount change was made to the standards of care as it related to treating chronic pain. For the first time ever, Doctors of Chiropractic (DC) were included. This change came as the result of The Joint Commission, an independent not-for-profit organization, that accredits and certifies over 20,000 healthcare institutions and programs in the U.S. Since 1951, The Joint Commission has been in existence, ensuring that every hospital and health care facility provides “safe and effective care of the highest quality and value.” This is a huge milestone in the field of chiropractic because society is finally acknowledging the over-reliance on prescription drugs to treat pain.

October is a month that really puts the focus back on you. The trend in healthcare is finally shifting to one that does not simply treat the symptoms, but rather the cause. Digging deeper to give you the best outcomes for a higher quality of life that is ultimately pain-free.

What Does Holistic Really Mean?

September 16, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

Did you know that many people do not seek the care of a chiropractor? There are a variety of reasons, from false stereotypes, a past negative experience with a chiropractor, a misunderstanding of words used in this field, to an over-reliance on the pharmaceutical industry. It’s also due to words like alternative, wellness, non-invasive and holistic that seem to confuse matters even more as they convey a non-medical approach. This couldn’t be further from the truth. The goal of this post is to help provide you with a better understanding of healthy aging with answers questions like: What does holistic really mean?

The basics of human anatomy tell us that each system within our body is connected to the other. Our respiratory system provides the oxygen our body needs to perform each function and remove the carbon dioxide. Our digestive system breaks down the food we eat so each organ and cell has the energy it needs to sustain life. Our nervous system uses the oxygen and food energy to direct the body in every capacity. Each system is connected to the other. Traditional medicine addresses the symptoms. Take, for example, type 2 diabetes or chronic back pain. A common approach is prescribing a pharmaceutical drug to alleviate the symptoms; however, the root cause is still there.

Chiropractic care uses a holistic approach, or, an approach that addresses the whole person versus only the physical symptoms. It focuses on the relationship between the parts of the body and the whole of the person. It is non-invasive care, meaning a chiropractor does not utilize instruments that would disrupt the normal functioning of the body. In other words, the techniques a chiropractor uses helps the body to perform as it was intended to and ultimately heal itself. Chiropractic care is considered to be alternative medicine simply because it isn’t dictated by the pharmaceutical industry and their advertising tactics.

Consider looking at your body from a holistic viewpoint. Consider lifting any restraints that prevent your body from functioning as it should, whether it be extra weight, a sedentary lifestyle, poor eating habits, or lack of sleep. These obstacles force your body to work overtime which diverts energy and resources that should go elsewhere. Be considerate of yourself. Think of your body as the temple that it truly is. The goal, in the end, should be healthy aging.

Identifying a Concussion

September 8, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

An injury to your brain can be deadly, especially because the injury is typically something you cannot physically see. The person experiencing the injury may not even know how extensive it is and may exhibit normal behaviors to those around them. This does not mean the injury is minimal or that the person is okay. In fact, of all injuries a person can sustain, one to the brain can be the most deadly because of its elusive nature. A brain injury, or concussion, happens when a person sustains a blow to the head, or suffers an injury that jars or shakes the brain inside the skull. Knowing the signs to look for after someone experiences this injury can mean the difference between life and death.

Football is a national past-time. We love it at all levels of play. Recently, there has been a lot of media coverage regarding the concussions sustained by NFL players and the debilitating side effects that have handicapped them for life. But, a concussion can happen at any age, and not just with football either. A fall on the ice, a collision with another player during a soccer game, a hit in the head with a lacrosse stick can all cause a concussion.

Surprisingly, only 10% of concussions actually result in loss of consciousness. If that’s the reality, what happens the other 90% of the time? To help you identify whether or not someone has suffered a concussion, here is a list of common symptoms:

  • headaches/migraines
  • visual problems
  • light sensitivity
  • noise sensitivity
  • nausea
  • dizziness
  • attention problems
  • trouble with memory
  • fogginess
  • fatigue
  • trouble sleeping
  • sleeping less than normal
  • sleeping more than normal
  • increased emotions
  • sadness
  • irritability
  • nervousness

To be safe, it’s always best to seek medical treatment with any head injury. And although a concussion is considered a “manageable injury” by healthcare professionals, the key is early detection and proper treatment.

Inflammation Diagnostic Testing

August 11, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

“Into Flame”

The Latin translation of the word inflammation literally means not only flame, but to become a flame. When we think of inflammation, the immediate image that comes to mind is skin that is red, swollen, and painful. It is visible. Yet there is another type of inflammation that may not be visible or even painful, but just as much a cause of concern, if not more so.  This type is hidden beneath the surface and is gradual in its manifestation.  It begins slowly and does not cause the immediate reaction of red, swollen, and painful skin like acute inflammation does.  This is termed chronic inflammation and diagnostic testing, in addition to mindfulness, can help identify if this culprit resides within us.

Inflammation is a natural process by which the body attempts to protect itself from harmful stimuli and begin the process to heal itself.  However, unlike acute inflammation where the body’s effort is rewarded and the body is healed (like a cut or a bruise), with chronic inflammation there is no reward.  The reason? The harmful stimuli is continually present in the body.  The healing is attempted but is thwarted by the constant onslaught of the problem. Here are a few examples:

  • smoking
  • eating a diet of highly processed foods
  • alcohol consumption
  • lack of exercise
  • poor sleep habits
  • excess weight

Imagine trying to build a sand castle as the tide is rolling in. No matter how fast you move that sand to protect the castle, the waves continue to advance. With each wave, what ever progress you made is washed away leaving you where you started. Inevitably, the water begins to win and you are left with a destroyed sand castle.

Our bodies react in much the same way. The harmful stimuli is the tide. The sand castle is our body. If we continually choose to eat a diet that is high in processed foods and fat, then each meal represents another wave. Over time, our body can’t keep up with repairing the damaged caused by our poor nutrition choices. This chronic inflammation can eventually cause several diseases, including some cancers, rheumatoid arthritis, heart disease, and periodontitis.

The key is to recognize the signs of inflammation before the disease shows up. Knowing what to look for can help you change the way you live and avoid a health scare as so many do. The symptoms that may indicate your body is suffering from chronic inflammation include:

  • ongoing, irritating pain in your joints or muscles
  • worsening asthma or allergies
  • high blood pressure or blood sugar
  • ulcers or Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
  • constant lethargy or exhaustion
  • skin problems

If you suspect there might be a problem you can also have inflammation diagnostic testing performed. A simple test can help uncovered the truth. If you listen, your body will tell you what it needs.

What do you hear?

Allergy Diagnostic Testing

July 31, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

It may come as no surprise that the incidence of food sensitivities has increased dramatically over the years.  According to a study released in 2013 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, food allergies among children increased approximately 50% between 1997 and 2011. There is also an increase in gastrointestinal problems associated with the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as aspirin and acetaminophen.  These digestive problems can become chronic conditions such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) which can significantly impact the quality of one’s life.

There are also other allergies besides food.  People are allergic to mold, pollen, spices, and gluten. Despite this overabundance of allergens, simply uncovering the root cause of symptoms does wonders for the sufferer.  Allergy diagnostic testing provides that microscope to determine what is causing the problem so steps can be taken to correct it.

Dealing with allergens can be tricky business.  Many times we cannot even see the culprit.  We feel it’s effects, but can’t say for certain what caused it.  Was it something we ate?  Something we touched? Breathed in?  Trying to discern for ourselves the hows the whats and the wheres can be exhausting and confusing.  A simple diagnostic test can pinpoint the allergy, allow for course correction in one’s life, and immediately begin to reap the benefits of implementing the change.

But what are some of the symptoms you might have to alert you to the need for allergy diagnostic testing?

  • asthma
  • arthritis
  • migraines
  • ear infections
  • eczema
  • sinusitis
  • urticaria
  • colitis
  • hyperactivity (as it relates to children)
  • IBS
  • anemia
  • abdominal cramps, gas, bloating
  • diarrhea
  • gastric ulcers

Obviously the list is quite extensive.  How the body reacts to an allergen can be different for each person.  However, knowing the signs helps prevent needless suffering.

While we aren’t sure why allergies are on a significant rise, we do know what we can do to stop them from affecting our lives.  Knowledge truly is a powerful thing, especially when it comes to dealing with an allergy.

Hormonal Diagnostic Testing

July 23, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

Hormones play a significant role in our lives especially in middle school with the onset of puberty.  They influence our sleep, our mood, our sex drive, appetite, energy, and metabolism.  As we age, the level of hormones in our body fluctuates.  The impact of these fluctuations can range from nearly undetectable to debilitating.  One of the cornerstones for healthy aging is managing this impact on our lives.  For it is inevitable that we will encounter fluctuations.  Hormonal diagnostic testing is one way to help manage that impact.  This type of testing can shed light on the true cause of the symptoms a person is experiencing.

Hormones play a powerful role in the body’s regulatory system.  They are secreted into the bloodstream by the endocrine glands, from the ovaries and testes to the pancreas and thyroid.  Hormones act as the messengers for each organ and tissue in the body, directing their specific functions.  Some of the functions include:

  • Metabolism
  • Growth and development
  • Reproductive health and sexual function
  • Cognitive function and mood
  • Body temperature and thirst

Hormones are so powerful that only the smallest amounts are necessary to do their job.  The slightest fluctuation can have a tremendous impact on our health which is why they are the key to healthy aging. But aging is only one factor that can create an imbalance.  Genetic disorders, diseases, exposure to environmental toxins, and even sleep disruptions can cause levels to shift.  In women, these changes in hormone levels can lead to chronic conditions such as:

  • PMS
  • Infertility
  • Endometriosis
  • Osteoporosis
  • Breast Cancer
  • Polycystic Ovary Disease

However, both men and women can experience the same symptoms as a result of varying hormone levels.  Some of the more common symptoms include:

  • Impaired memory
  • Poor focus
  • Loss of libido
  • Mood swings
  • Fatigue
  • Lack of sleep
  • Appetite level

Hormonal diagnostic testing identifies these imbalances.  It eliminates guess work and the process of trial and error.  By properly identifying the problem, a person’s quality of life improves faster because your healthcare provider can then direct you on the right path.  Because who wants to wait to feel their best each and every day?

Digestive Diagnostic Testing

July 16, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

The key to good health lies within the gastrointestinal (GI) system. It is this system that has the ability to impact not only digestion, but mood and immunity, as well. We typically underestimate the influence it can have on our daily lives. We tend to minimize our symptoms, especially if they seem minor and don’t significantly impact our lives.

Truth be told, many people have lowered their expectations on what it means to actually feel good, or they forget what “good” feels like. Our bodies can face a daily onslaught of poor nutrition, toxins, unhealthy lifestyle choices, and inadequate physical activity. It’s no wonder that after a period of years living like this that our body begins to show signs of wear and tear. Fortunately, this situation can be reversed with digestive (GI) diagnostic testing. It is one of the tools that can reveal where the deficiencies are that are causing the symptoms. By providing this insight, the proper course of action can be taken to improve not only overall digestion, but mental and emotional health, and immunity.

Our GI system contains significant amounts of bacteria. Ideally, the bacteria remains in balance, working in harmony with our body. However, the scales can tip in favor of the bacteria if we become sick or deny our body the essentials it needs to thrive. When this imbalance occurs, we open the door for disfunction in the form of an illness such as:

  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)
  • Autoimmune Disorders
  • Diabetes
  • Cardiovascular Disease

We also become more susceptible to developing allergies and joint disease, in addition to inflammation, poor digestion, and malabsorption. Other consequences of an imbalanced digestive tract include:

  • gas
  • bloating
  • abdominal pain
  • constipation
  • diarrhea
  • anemia
  • malnutrition
  • impaired metabolism
  • hormone imbalance

A simple test, taken at home, provides the data necessary for the diagnostic testing. The most common tests require between 1 and 3 days of samples. The lab that performs the analysis provides the results to your Doctor so that he or she can determine the best course of action to return balance to your gastrointestinal system.

The clues to our overall health can be found. They may not be obvious or visible, but they are there. We may need a little extra help to find them, but it is worth it if it means living a higher quality life, without pain, discomfort, or imbalances.

Diagnostic Testing

July 14, 2015 By Damron Chiropractic

Sometimes it is necessary to shed additional light on our health in order to find the solution to the problem we are experiencing.  By digging a bit deeper, we can reveal the true culprit of our symptoms so the issue can be resolved once and for all.  This approach also eliminates the band-aid solution because sufficient time was not given to properly assess the situation.  One of the tools utilized to shed this light is diagnostic testing.  This advanced form of testing looks at a variety of functions within the human body to identify abnormalities in one or more its intricate systems. Diagnostic testing requires only one of three things – saliva, urine, or blood – which can uncover a wealth of information to help bring good health back.

At Damron Chiropractic & Wellness, we offer 6 different types of diagnostic testing to help us provide the answers you are looking for:

  • Gastro-Intestinal (GI)/Digestive
  • Nutritional
  • Hormonal – Male and Female
  • Adrenal/Stress/Thyroid
  • Allergy
  • Inflammatory

Depending on the reason for the visit, performing a diagnostic test may be exactly what Dr. Damron prescribes.  The initial consultation may be enough to warrant this next step, but over the course of your visits, symptoms may appear that were masked by something else.  Either way, this valuable tool can provide invaluable insight into how the body is functioning, what is contributing to the imbalance, and most importantly, what can be done to correct it.  The bottom-line goal is to get back to wellness by giving the body exactly what it needs to thrive.

In addition to the samples of saliva, urine, or blood a simple questionnaire is also included.  Questions that help create an overview of daily functions, activities, and experiences.  Many times the answer is right in front of us, but we fail to see it simply because of how obvious it really is.  Diagnostic testing can also validate our intuition.  It can confirm what we have suspected all along.  It is amazing how a person’s life can be transformed with the truth.  For it is only by knowing the truth that progress can be made.

The next 6 blog posts will look at each type of diagnostic testing to give you a better understanding of their benefits.

Dr. Damron believes DCW’s unique approach to achieving overall wellness will revolutionize the healthcare industry through collaborative care utilizing chiropractic, massage therapy, rehabilitation, and nutrition. The DCW focus addresses the whole person versus a only symptom and uncovers the root cause. He also believes that education is vital to sustaining a healthier more vibrant lifestyle as well. His goal is to create a healthier society and a better place for our children to live.
Dr. Damron began his medical career with a Biology Degree from Wright State University in 2002. Erika Pantona, Insurance Specialist

Why DCWProfessional Experience Personal Information
Erika started coming to DCW in 2010 after spending two years in substantial pain after an injury. She had spent those two years at various specialists and taking medications to simply get up in the morning due to the pain. She was 18 when she found herself facing a major, life altering surgery (SI Fusion) and realized there must be another way. When she began her treatment plan at DCW she started to have days with little or no pain. She stopped taking her medications and realized they had been affecting her overall mood. In 2015 Erika joined the DCW team because they allowed her to live her life once again. She wants to prevent others from living in pain like she did unnecessarily, and to receive the benefits of chiropractic care.
Erika is well versed in the insurance industry with her previous employment at Express Scripts and Anthem.
Erika has two siblings and resides in Liberty Township. In her spare time she enjoys traveling and hiking with her family.

Amy Faris, Patient Care Coordinator

Why DCWProfessional Experience Personal Information
After moving to Ohio in 2010, I was in need of some relief from minor pain associated with working in customer service fields for 15 years. I was interested in seeking alternative forms of therapy and found a chiropractor in our small town. After going for a few visits, the therapy seemed somewhat outdated compared to what I had researched. In talking with my husband, he remembered that he knew someone who was a chiropractor. After just a few visits with Dr. Damron, I definitely noticed a difference in his techniques and style. It was nice to see results and feel like I was being listened to as a patient, not just heard…something you don’t always feel with doctors. After being a patient for several years, the opportunity came about to join the DCW team. It would be something different from what I had done in my past, however I knew my passion for working with people would translate well into helping patients receive the best care possible. I believed in the mission of DCW as a patient, and I am excited to be part of living that mission every day.
I am originally from St. Louis, MO. I graduated from the University of Missouri – Columbia with a degree in Secondary Education – Language Arts. I worked in restaurant/catering management for several years before starting a career in retail management and training.
In that position, I met my husband, Matt, who is from Wilmington, OH. After we got married in 2010, I moved to Wilmington. Realizing retail wasn’t where my heart was any longer, I began working as a substitute teacher in the Clinton County area. Matt and I live in Wilmington with our 6 year old German Shepard, Dale. I enjoy camping, boating, riding 4-wheelers, and spending time with family and friends. I love St. Louis Cardinals baseball and am a recently converted Cincinnati Bengals fan.
