1.) Chiropractic Care

The most basic form of therapeutic care performed by a Doctor of Chiropractic is known as “spinal manipulation” aka the “chiropractic adjustment.” The chiropractic adjustment is a procedure in which trained professionals use their hands to apply controlled and sudden force to the spinal joint in order to improve physical function, increase mobility and alleviate pain. But there are more benefits to chiropractic adjustments than aiding in the repair of injured tissue.

2). Rehabilitation

Injuries happen, no matter what your age. While rehabilitation means different things to different people, the focus is the same. The DCW Rehabilitation Department has four main areas of specialty:

Injury. For patients who have been hurt in a car or work-related accident, injury rehab is for patients who are out of acute pain treatment.

Muscular Imbalance. Muscular Imbalance Rehabilitation (MIR) is designed to alleviate pain that may not have resulted from a specific injury. Examples of MIR can be found in age-related disc degeneration and the onset of “text neck.”

Health-Focused. When treating chronic conditions such as allergies, cardiovascular disease, hyperthyroidism or weight and stress management is the focus, sometimes patients need an accountability partner and the support of a well-trained staff member. We put together a plan that incorporates rehabilitation exercises and stretching that promotes good health and focuses on avoiding injury.

Athlete and Sport-Specific. When playing sports, injuries are inevitable. When injury does occur and in order to get the athlete back in elite competition form, an injury and sport specific plan is required. From grade school to college, time is of the essence. Without proper healing and rehabilitation, the athlete runs the risk of re-injury.

3). Therapeutic Massage

At one time, going to a spa and getting a massage was considered a luxury. In today’s stress-ridden, autoimmune deficient, muscle and joint pain-afflicted lives, it’s becoming a necessity. An apple a day keeps the doctor away. Wouldn’t it be nice if life and health were really that simple? In today’s mask-wearing, social distancing, can’t-hug-your-loved ones-for-fear-of-making-them-morbidly-ill times, staying healthy has become more complicated. But Mother Goose, in her infinite wisdom said these words, For every ailment under the sun, there is a remedy, or there is none, If there be one, try to find it; If there be none, never mind it.

And that’s where chiropractic comes in—to find simple and effective solutions to healthier living.

Chiropractic medicine? What is this sorcery?

Chiropractic medicine is a holistic approach to health that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of neuromuscular disorders through manual manipulation or adjustment of the spine. The spine protects the spinal cord, which is kind of a big deal because it controls your body’s central nervous system.

Let that sink in a minute. That ropy little column running down the center of your back is what lies between your skin, and the short circuitry of every single function of the human body. Whoever said the spine is your lifeline wasn’t kidding.

Moms Deserve Wellness Checks Too

Summer is a time for relaxation, no schedules, vacations, and poolside gatherings. It’s a time to catch up with family and friends, work on that tan, and catch up with your reading. It’s also a time to let things go. Mom’s especially are guilty of this, but not in the way you might think. There’s no letting go of keeping the kids occupied during the lazy days of summer, or staying on top of going to all the graduation parties, neighborhood barbecues, dinners with friends. Moms forget that summer is for them, too.

Now that school is back in session, it is time for moms to take inventory of themselves. After three months of putting everyone else’s needs first, the time has come for self. Fall is the perfect time for moms of all ages to also schedule back to school wellness checks. To uncover the causes of any pain or discomfort they might have been experiencing over the summer, yet postponed doing anything about it. Maybe it was that lumpy mattress on vacation that caused your back to start aching. Or the extra weight put on from those frozen margaritas and pizza parties. Or even all the time spent on getting your child ready for college over the summer that sidelined your exercise regiment.

No matter what the reason, there are a few simple steps a mom can take to help get herself feeling good and back on track.

  • Schedule a massage.
  • Visit your chiropractor to get yourself back in alignment and address any pain or discomfort.
  • Increase your water intake.
  • Get outside and walk.
  • Set an earlier bedtime to offset the earlier morning schedule.
  • Call another mom and schedule time during the week to workout together.

The Dangers of Fragrance Chemicals

When it comes to our senses, smell is perhaps the most powerful. The scent of something can bring back memories of people, places, and events. It is our sense of smell that drives the fragrance industry, too. An enormous industry that encompasses perfumes, personal care products, air fresheners, laundry and cleaning products, candles, and even clothing. Yet, these chemically derived fragrances come with a risk. Increasing research is connecting many fragrance chemicals to cancer, hormone disruption, asthma, allergies, birth defects and neurotoxicity.

Europe has proactively responded to this danger by enacting legislation requiring the labeling of 26 fragrances. In the U.S., this is not the case. Consumer safety groups are seeking to change this by forcing companies to list the scent chemicals in their products. The goal is to raise public awareness of the dangers of these synthetic scents because they contain “endocrine-disrupting chemicals.” Approximately 3,000 fragrance chemicals are currently in use today. All used to create appealing scents for things like perfume, fabric softener, shampoo and aftershave. But our exposure doesn’t stop there. We are also subjected to an abundance of chemicals outside of the home, too.

In addition to the many health problems scent chemicals can cause, an increasing number of people are experiencing fragrance-contact allergies. These allergic reactions are similar to any other allergic reaction with redness, itching, swelling and inflammation. However, the problem with fragrance-contact allergies is that a person doesn’t know the cause. There is currently no labeling of chemical scents on U.S. consumer goods.

Fortunately, there is good news. It appears that companies are beginning to take notice of the consumer safety groups and taking steps to change their labels. Much like what is now done in Europe. Until that time, be aware of the scents you have in your home and limit your exposure. You Can Stop Preventable Disease

Two out of three U.S. adults are overweight or obese.

One in twenty adults have extreme obesity.

One out of three children are considered overweight or obese.

One of every five preventable disease and deaths is attributed to smoking.

One out of three adults have prediabetes.

One out of three deaths are attributed to cardiovascular disease.

These statistics are staggering. In fact, they are so alarming that one would think that the trend is declining, however, quite the opposite is true. Let’s face it, Americans are facing a serious epidemic that is completely within their control. Yet, despite this control, are still choosing to turn a blind eye to the consequences of their choices. Much like waving the white flag of surrender during historic battles.

Despite countless measures by reputable organizations and non-profits, even our own government for that matter, society continues on the same unhealthy path. Billions of dollars are invested to change these statistics, yet no one is listening. Similar to the decision of surrender during war, when troops are out numbered and lacking sufficient weaponry to defend themselves, modern society needs to acknowledge the same defeat. Except our enemy is not a person, or country. It is a lifestyle.

This lifestyle is also a mindset. Common sense is thrown out the window. Reliance on convenience and cost has trumped nutrition. Do we not know, at some level, that fried, fast food is not good for our health? That just because it’s cheap doesn’t mean sacrificing nutritional value for ourselves or children. Or that soda contains way too much sugar for our body to digest? What about the the ingredients in a package of food? Have you ever really tried to read the list? If you can’t pronounce it, chances are your body can’t use it.

Likewise, the surgeon general warns that cigarettes are harmful to our health, even to the extent of causing cancer. Television commercials show a former smoker with a tracheostomy (surgically created hole in the windpipe) telling people not to smoke or this might happen to them, too.

Isn’t it time that we wave that white flag, saying we are through with living on this slippery slope of unhealthy choices? Surrendering means realizing that our bodies are no match for processed foods, remaining sedentary, or overindulgence. If we were, we wouldn’t be in the health crisis we are in today.

Let’s start by waving that white flag – today.

What Does Healthy Really Mean?

What does healthy really mean? Think about it for a minute. When you take the time to determine what it means to be healthy, what do you think of? Some of us may think being skinny means healthy. Others may equate well-defined muscles as a sign of healthy. Still others may think it’s living a long life. While all of these might be true, it still doesn’t answer the question of what being healthy means, especially to ourselves. We are each unique individuals, all traveling a separate path in life. While we may walk together, our journeys are vastly different. Not only that, but our body’s are also uniquely different as well. This is definitely not new information for you. However, what is likely new is the fact that healthy is a unique experience for each and every person.

Perhaps the best way to help you determine what healthy means to you is to do a self-assessment. An inventory of you, where you are at in your life, where you want to go from here. It’s probably safe to say that many of us are just too busy getting through each day to really focus on ourselves. Many of us are probably a little scared to even think about it. Not because something is terribly wrong, but because we don’t know where we are going to find the time to help ourselves get to where we want to be. Time to re-prioritize.

So, if you would be able to see the future, would you want to? What about two different futures? One where you routinely did a self-assessment on your health and changed what needed changing, the other where you continually chose to ignore yourself. If only we had the ability to see ahead of time the impact of our decisions before we made them. Would that alter how we live our lives today?

For the sake of reality, let’s take that self-assessment to determine what healthy really means to you.

  • Are you tired right now? Do you always feel tired? If you could sneak a nap in right now, would you take it? When was the last time you woke up feeling refreshed?
  • How do your joints feel right now?
  • What is the scale telling you about your weight? Do you feel comfortable and confident in your clothes?
  • How does your skin look?
  • Are you eating healthy foods? If so, how much?
  • Do you feel stressed during the day?
  • When was the last time you took care of you?

Take your time and answer these questions with honesty. The next blog post will address the issue of what it means to really be healthy.

Who’s Carrying Your ‘Journey of Life’ Baggage?

The country of Nepal, located in southern Asia, is best known for the majestic Himalayan Mountains. Mount Everest plays the starring role, as many seek to conquer its incredible height by climbing. To reach the top requires extensive training, the highest quality equipment, and an expert to guide you. Perhaps the most important of all three is the guide. In Nepal, these guides are called sherpas. These natives not only guide but carry the climber’s equipment, which is usually more than 100 pounds. In order to reach the top of Everest, a sherpa is a must.

We can compare the journey of life to that of climbing a mountain like Mount Everest. When we are young, we find ourselves at the base of the mountain. There’s really no need for specific gear, aside from proper walking shoes maybe. The journey is easy. As a child, we recover quickly from injury, get plenty of sleep, don’t worry much, and eat what we want.

As we begin our ascent, we may not even realize it because the incline is so slight. Yet, we are still moving forward in our journey of life, into our teen years and early adulthood. Many of us play sports, enjoying the intensity of it. But that also comes with more intense injuries from fractures, concussions, and even surgery to repair things. Again, we recover quickly. We are young. Eating what we want, when we want – like those midnight fast-food runs!

Climbing still further up that mountain, we begin to feel the incline. We need more gear to keep us moving forward. The sherpa is ready for this. In our life, our 20s and 30s mean career and kids. This also means lack of sleep, a more sedentary lifestyle, and a body that takes on a bit more weight than it should. But, it seems to be the norm for people your age so you just accept it.

As the climb continues, the oxygen levels get thinner, the temperature decreases, and the journey much more difficult. Thank goodness for the sherpa and all that extra gear. If only we had a sherpa in real life! Unfortunately, we are our own sherpa, carrying all the baggage we accumulate over the years. From extra weight from lack of exercise; fatigue from lack of sleep due to career, kids, hot flashes, pregnancy, and worry; to injuries we might have sustained from accidents or falls. In other words, life happens.

The good news is that we can choose to offload some of the “gear” we are carrying as our own sherpa through self-care. In other words, we can choose to lose that extra weight, we can choose to help ourselves handle stress through massage or working out, we can choose to resolve that pain we have been dealing with for years. A solution like this does not just happen. It requires a commitment to oneself and the desire for change.

Evolving Corporate Wellness Programs

Corporate Wellness Programs are a popular benefit at many companies throughout the country. Used to attract and retain top employees, wellness programs also help to keep healthcare costs down and employee productivity up. During a recent conversation with a Corporate Wellness employee at a local company, the topic of weight loss came up. Employees are becoming resistant to enrolling in a public weight loss program at their company. It’s not that the employee doesn’t want to lose weight either. What it really comes down to is the public display of private information – their actual weight.

In reality, the truth can hurt, it can also be embarrassing. We know when we should lose weight. And how much. But do we really want the world, or in this case every coworker, to know this? So, in response to this shift from “Biggest Loser” is a culture of movement. In a society where people are sedentary most of the day, the trend is now towards moving the body, in addition to eating healthy. Besides, weight loss is only one component of healthy living. Plus, what you weigh does not necessarily mean you are unhealthy either. So, the focus is now shifting to movement.

Movement is a choice. And businesses all across the country are looking at ways to infuse movement throughout a work day from:

  • encouraging the use of stairs vs the elevator
  • taking a walk during lunch or a break
  • purchasing standing desks
  • creating a space for fun such as adding ping pong tables, a weight room, or walking trails
  • supporting a local 5k charity event
  • partnering with a local gym to offer discounted memberships
  • offering lunch and learns to educate and inform employees about maintaining good health

Losing weight and getting healthy has never been any easier, especially when the workplace promotes it, too. The shift from public weight loss programs and contests has actually made for even better wellness programs. But even if your company does not offer these wellness benefits, you can take matters into your own hands by choosing the path of movement when given an option.

Stopping the Domino Effect With DCW

There is a major commonality between the people who attend a sporting event, concert or even a race. The energy one’s feels is almost palpable. If it’s a highly contested game, the last few minutes are deafening from all the cheering. It seems like everyone in the stadium is caught up in the quest for victory. Or at a concert, the final act can bring every person to their feet, singing the song in unison with the artist. At a race like the Flying Pig Marathon, all the runners in the ques are eagerly awaiting the starting gun. The common excitement on each face is obvious.

In all three situations, there is a common feeling. This shared interest has momentum and creates a sense of belonging. Sometimes life throws us a curve ball that derails us from living fully. It could be chronic pain from a past injury, extra weight hindering our mobility, or type 2 diabetes causing lifestyle changes. At this point in our life, we have two choices. The first is to do nothing, accept the situation as it is and let the chips fall where they may. It certainly is the easier of the two because it requires zero effort on our part. However, there are consequences with any choice and this choice is no different.

Choosing to do nothing creates a domino effect. If we are suffering from chronic pain and choose to do nothing about it, we may put on even more weight because we are more sedentary. More weight only exasperates the problem causing quality of life issues. And so the dominoes continue to fall.

The other option is choosing to act, choosing to change the situation. In other words, never letting the dominoes fall in the first place. If we are overweight or obese, we choose to seek help. We choose to surround ourselves with other like-minded people who share the same goals. This shared interest gives us momentum and support, much like we find at a concert, game, or race. Are Health Scares Required for Change?

Imagine what the world would be like if everyone was healthy, without any health scares. There is no cancer, obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or diabetes. Could this world ever exist? If it did, what would happen to the pharmaceutical industry, the weight loss clinics, diet fads, bariatric surgeons, and oncology practices. The world as we know it would be vastly different. Multi-million dollar companies would fail to exist. If only this could be a reality. Life would be easier and without pain.

Unfortunately, society is filled with individuals who have choices on how to live, what to eat, drink, and smoke. Choices about exercise, work, and entertainment. All choices. Many of the choices we are making today lead us down a path of disease and a lower quality of life. Whether we realize it or not.

The question that perplexes many healthcare professionals is why. Why is this the trend today? It’s like sitting on a train track as the train is quickly approaching and not moving. Companies can claim they are doing their part to build awareness regarding this epidemic through advertising campaigns, new product development and charitable giving. However, just because a fast food restaurant adds skim milk and apples to their kids meals, does that make it healthy? Is that enough to make us change our eating habits?

What about the NBA and the NFL encouraging kids to get healthy through their specific initiatives? While this is certainly commendable, why does either organization need to tell us how to raise our children? Isn’t this something we should already be doing? Meanwhile, we continue to attend games and eat the processed foods served there. And our obesity trend continues to climb. Perhaps the extra weight people are carrying is now seen as the norm? We look around and this is what we see.

We need to realize that a company that advertises a campaign for healthier living is just that. An advertisement. Yes, it is talking about being healthy, but it is about the company itself and it’s own visibility among its target audience. Much like a corporation sponsoring an event. The corporation does it for visibility and branding purposes. Unfortunately, human nature typically requires an ultimatum to change, like significant health scares tend to bring. You just need to watch “My 600-lb. Life” to realize that.

In the end it comes down to choice. Our choice. Every day, making the right choices for ourselves to live healthier. It means taking awareness and doing something with it. Action. Deep down we know we are hurting our body when we smoke, drink in excess, eat processed foods, stay sedentary. The real question we need to ask ourselves is why don’t we care to stop when we see the train barreling down the tracks at us? Do we really need health scares to take action?

Dr. Damron believes DCW’s unique approach to achieving overall wellness will revolutionize the healthcare industry through collaborative care utilizing chiropractic, massage therapy, rehabilitation, and nutrition. The DCW focus addresses the whole person versus a only symptom and uncovers the root cause. He also believes that education is vital to sustaining a healthier more vibrant lifestyle as well. His goal is to create a healthier society and a better place for our children to live.
Dr. Damron began his medical career with a Biology Degree from Wright State University in 2002. He went on to receive his Doctorate of Chiropractic from the prestigious Palmer College of Chiropractic in Port Orange, Florida in 2007. While attending Palmer, he had the opportunity to travel abroad to Madagascar and provide chiropractic care to the native Malagasy people. Dr. Damron has continued his post-graduate studies with a focus on nutrition, rehabilitation, and functional medicine.
Dr. Damron and his wife, Kristy, reside in West Chester with their two young children, Graden and Isabelle. An avid Buckeye fan, Dr. Damron enjoys playing the guitar in a band with his college friends, watching/playing any sport, cooking, reading, and attending concerts, especially the Dave Matthews Band and Foo Fighters.

Dr. Greg Washam, Chiropractor

Dr. Washam was introduced to Chiropractic by his mother at the age of 16. She was working for a Chiropractor at the time, experiencing all the benefits that Chiropractic care had to offer, and thus began taking Dr. Washam and his siblings in for regular adjustments. Dr. Washam had been experiencing painful bouts of Strep Throat from the age of 8, which always included a 10 day course of antibiotics. While under Chiropractic care his doctor convinced him to avoid the antibiotics and receive Chiropractic adjustments instead. To his amazement, Dr. Washam’s strep throat symptoms had vanished within three days and he never had an issue from that point forward. He was so astounded by his experience that he fell in love with Chiropractic and decided that was the path for him. He wanted to commit his life to helping people through the power of Chiropractic, just as it had helped him.
Dr. Greg Washam began his college education at the University of Cincinnati, studying biology. After he made the decision to become a Chiropractor, he attended Logan College of Chiropractic in St. Louis, MO. While at Logan, he received his Bachelor of Science in Biology and Life Sciences in 2009. He received his Doctorate of Chiropractic in 2011. Dr. Washam was presented with various awards upon graduation. These included Dean’s List honors, the Senior Intern Assistant Award, and the Award of Excellence from the Division of Research. He has completed many hours of post graduate education focusing on nutrition, supplementation and injury recovery.
Dr. Washam and his wife Kassie reside in Mason, Oh with their two daughters, Lillian and Wren. In his free time, Dr. Washam enjoys cooking, exploring new restaurants, touring local craft breweries and reading. He also spends a great deal of time outdoors with his family and his Beagle, Willow. Dr. Washam is a music enthusiast and listens to all genres of music. He especially loves classic rock from the 60’s and 70’s. His favorite band of all time is Led Zeppelin.

Brooke Snyder, Operations Manager

Brooke had never been to a medical office where she really felt like they cared more about her than her money until she came to DCW as a patient. DCW made it so easy to arrange financial payment with, they were compassionate, dedicated and most importantly 100% honest. The team addressed all aspects of her health and well-being, above and beyond chiropractic care. Her initial impression of chiropractic offices were that they would only adjust then send her on her way. She realized that she was wrong. Because of her experience as a patient at DCW she realized she wanted to pursue a career within it. She saw everything she wanted in healthcare at DCW. Finally, a place where patient care really comes first! She comes to DCW with a degree in Nursing and a background in finance. When someone asks her “Why DCW?” she cannot think of one reason why not.
Brooke has a background in business finance and computer technology prior to the start of her medical career. She attended Southern State and obtained an Associate’s Degree in Science, R.N. Sh began working from DCW in December of 2014.
Brooke has five beautiful girls from 15 to 6 years old. She is married to Jamey Snyder who has two boys of his own. She lives on a two acre farm in the country with horses, dogs, cats, and a pot belly pig. Brooke enjoys spending time with her very active family and watching their kids play sports.

Nicole Foreman, Licensed Massage Therapist

Nicole always wanted a career that was focused on helping people. It wasn’t until she drove past the Dayton School of Medical Massage on a daily basis that it became clear what she was meant to do. She enrolled as soon as she could and it has been the best decision she has ever made. She loves the feeling of knowing she has alleviated someone’s pain and possibly made their day better in some way. She had been working alongside chiropractors for over 7 years before joining the DCW team. Before DCW she never really felt her opinions and insights were valued or even asked for, which she felt hindered patient care and the effectiveness of each treatment. At DCW she feels valued and part of a practice that is focused on changing the approach of wellness with cohesive and effective patient care.
Nicole is a graduate of the Dayton School of Medical Massage and obtained her license in 2008. She utilizes Deep Tissue, Swedish and Thai massage techniques to relieve pain, tension, and stress while increasing range of motion and flexibility.
Nicole is married to her husband of 5 years and they one daughter, Rylee, and one child on the way due in September 2016. As a family they enjoy camping, hiking and spending time at the lake during the summer.

Erika Pantona, Insurance Specialist

Erika started coming to DCW in 2010 after spending two years in substantial pain after an injury. She had spent those two years at various specialists and taking medications to simply get up in the morning due to the pain. She was 18 when she found herself facing a major, life altering surgery (SI Fusion) and realized there must be another way. When she began her treatment plan at DCW she started to have days with little or no pain. She stopped taking her medications and realized they had been affecting her overall mood. In 2015 Erika joined the DCW team because they allowed her to live her life once again. She wants to prevent others from living in pain like she did unnecessarily, and to receive the benefits of chiropractic care.
Erika is well versed in the insurance industry with her previous employment at Express Scripts and Anthem.
Erika has two siblings and resides in Liberty Township. In her spare time she enjoys traveling and hiking with her family.

Amy Faris, Patient Care Coordinator

After moving to Ohio in 2010, I was in need of some relief from minor pain associated with working in customer service fields for 15 years. I was interested in seeking alternative forms of therapy and found a chiropractor in our small town. After going for a few visits, the therapy seemed somewhat outdated compared to what I had researched. In talking with my husband, he remembered that he knew someone who was a chiropractor. After just a few visits with Dr. Damron, I definitely noticed a difference in his techniques and style. It was nice to see results and feel like I was being listened to as a patient, not just heard…something you don’t always feel with doctors. After being a patient for several years, the opportunity came about to join the DCW team. It would be something different from what I had done in my past, however I knew my passion for working with people would translate well into helping patients receive the best care possible. I believed in the mission of DCW as a patient, and I am excited to be part of living that mission every day. 
 I am originally from St. Louis, MO. I graduated from the University of Missouri – Columbia with a degree in Secondary Education – Language Arts. I worked in restaurant/catering management for several years before starting a career in retail management and training.
In that position, I met my husband, Matt, who is from Wilmington, OH. After we got married in 2010, I moved to Wilmington. Realizing retail wasn’t where my heart was any longer, I began working as a substitute teacher in the Clinton County area. Matt and I live in Wilmington with our 6 year old German Shepard, Dale. I enjoy camping, boating, riding 4-wheelers, and spending time with family and friends. I love St. Louis Cardinals baseball and am a recently converted Cincinnati Bengals fan.
