4 Steps to Holistic Health

1.) Chiropractic Care

The most basic form of therapeutic care performed by a Doctor of Chiropractic is known as “spinal manipulation” aka the “chiropractic adjustment.” The chiropractic adjustment is a procedure in which trained professionals use their hands to apply controlled and sudden force to the spinal joint in order to improve physical function, increase mobility and alleviate pain. But there are more benefits to chiropractic adjustments than aiding in the repair of injured tissue.

2). Rehabilitation

Injuries happen, no matter what your age. While rehabilitation means different things to different people, the focus is the same. The DCW Rehabilitation Department has four main areas of specialty:

Injury. For patients who have been hurt in a car or work-related accident, injury rehab is for patients who are out of acute pain treatment.

Muscular Imbalance. Muscular Imbalance Rehabilitation (MIR) is designed to alleviate pain that may not have resulted from a specific injury. Examples of MIR can be found in age-related disc degeneration and the onset of “text neck.”

Health-Focused. When treating chronic conditions such as allergies, cardiovascular disease, hyperthyroidism or weight and stress management is the focus, sometimes patients need an accountability partner and the support of a well-trained staff member. We put together a plan that incorporates rehabilitation exercises and stretching that promotes good health and focuses on avoiding injury.

Athlete and Sport-Specific. When playing sports, injuries are inevitable. When injury does occur and in order to get the athlete back in elite competition form, an injury and sport specific plan is required. From grade school to college, time is of the essence. Without proper healing and rehabilitation, the athlete runs the risk of re-injury.

3). Therapeutic Massage

At one time, going to a spa and getting a massage was considered a luxury. In today’s stress-ridden, autoimmune deficient, muscle and joint pain-afflicted lives, it’s becoming a necessity. Challenge the Status Quo

Hindsight is 20/20, right? You know that because you’ve heard people say, “if only I knew then what I know now.” Many times our own ignorance prevents us from considering other options to make a better decision. We are content with the status quo. In the field of chiropractic, it’s those hindsight people who find themselves seeking care from a chiropractor. These individuals realize that they initially let their preconceived ideas lead them down the wrong path of care. The price paid for this choice was a misdiagnosis, money, time, and experiencing pain longer than necessary.

The point of this post is to emphasize a basic fact of human nature. We are much more cynical than we realize. Take, for example, the presidential debates. It was obvious that no one was listening to the other. There are many “great divides” out there from:

  • political parties
  • religions
  • schools
  • countries
  • medicine

Depending on how we were raised and our life experiences, we may significantly limit ourselves by sticking with what we know rather than challenging the status quo. Imagine if the status quo was never challenged as we look back over history. The New World would never have been discovered, electricity would not have been invented, man would never have landed on the moon nor taken flight. Not accepting the status quo, or majority thinking, means dealing with people who oppose what you are doing. It means taking what is known and dispelling what was believed to be true. Imagine how much courage it took to continue on anyways.

Chiropractic is a field many consider to challenge the status quo. Modern medicine dominates our lives. While modern medicine has done incredible things, it has also completely overshadowed the benefits of other forms of health care. This dominance has created a mindset that accepts modern medicine as the status quo, questioning anything that is conflicting, like chiropractic. But just like Christopher Columbus, Thomas Edison, the Wright brothers, and Neil Armstrong, the world became a better place. Mankind’s quality of life improved. Benefits were gained that were not realized before. The field of chiropractic is the same type of scenario.

More and more people recognize the need to advocate for themselves. Doing so changes their mindset on what it means to be truly healthy. Challenge the status quo when it comes to chiropractic care and you can change your world.

Finish Your Treatment Plan

If you’ve ever had a prescription filled, you know that the doctor tells you to finish the medication even if you feel better once again. The bottle also alerts you to the same thing. Why? Well just because you feel better does not necessarily mean that you are. The fact that you feel better is a great thing, but there is a reason that the course of treatment is the length that it is. Likewise, with the treatment plan you are prescribed by a chiropractor, there is a reason to finish it, even though you start to feel better once again. You want to stay better.

Not finishing your medication means there’s a high likelihood that your problem will return because it wasn’t entirely gone in the first place. Granted it was diminished substantially, but the remnants that had not yet been removed by the effects of the medication now have a chance to regroup and flourish once again. This situation leaves you back where you started from. When you seek the care of a chiropractor, the doctor always prescribes a treatment plan to address the pain. The typical length of a treatment plan is 4 to 6 weeks. At about week 2, if not sooner, the patient starts to feel good again. The pain is nearly gone, if not totally gone. While this is fantastic news, this does not mean that treatment is over. In fact, it has only just begun. Just like when taking medication. One needs to finish the course of treatment for it to be effective.

Know that there is a purpose behind each chiropractic visit. Know that each visit during your treatment plan is a step towards healing. Give your body the time it needs to reap the benefits of each adjustment, massage therapy, and strengthening you do during treatment. Feeling great is good, but staying that way is even better!

Myofascial Release Therapy

There’s massage, and then there’s massage therapy. Big difference that many people don’t realize. The first feels good, but only scratches the surface in terms of really addressing the muscles. Massage therapy on the other hand looks at the body from a therapeutic perspective. Digging much deeper into the foundation of the body through the muscles. One particular form of massage therapy is called myofascial release.  Myofascial Release Therapy is a safe and effective technique that involves applying gentle yet sustained pressure to the connective tissue that provides support and protection to our muscles and bones. This is a hands-on therapy to eliminate pain and restore motion. However, with this technique, slight discomfort may be involved because of the poor condition of the myofascial. This is normal and to be expected in order to properly heal.

The way we treat our bodies at various times in our life is troubling. We punish it with overuse, improper restoration, and disregard. It’s only later that we feel the effects of how we treated it – aches, pain, weight gain, inflammation. A traditional massage, like a Swedish Relaxation Massage, is exactly what the name implies – relaxing. Myofascial Release is different. While it is a form of massage therapy, the purpose is not to be relaxing. The purpose is to heal the body and sometimes healing can create some discomfort. The discomfort is coming from the restrictions in the connective tissue brought about by surgery, trauma, and inflammation. The punishment we gave our body over the years.

The good news is what the end result means to the patient:

  • Decreased Pain
  • Alleviated Pressure
  • Restoration of Full Motion
  • Reduced Inflammation
  • Improved Function

The old exercise motto “No Pain, No Gain” can also be applied to Massage Therapy. Proper healing cannot occur without some type of discomfort or minimal pain. The massage therapist is breaking down the muscles from their current state so that they can return to how they should be. This breaking down process is what causes the discomfort. It is normal and to be expected. The relief you feel after Myofascial Release Therapy is somewhat surreal. You simply cannot believe how good you feel. It’s almost as if your entire body is thanking you.

Circle of Care

Things at Damron Chiropractic & Wellness (DCW) are a little different than they are at other chiropractic offices. Most practices provide only one element of care to patients, that being chiropractic. While there is nothing wrong with this singular approach to wellness, we believe that there are ways to enhance it so that the benefits of chiropractic are maximized and retained. At DCW we provide a circle of care that incorporates three other therapies to every person we treat:

  2. Rehabilitation
  3. Nutritional Support

So, what is the significance to this methodology? Well, structurally, a body that is out of alignment will eventually go back to its original state after an adjustment if nothing else is done to support it. The muscles will work against the realignment, as they are use to holding the body in a certain way. Massage therapy works to loosen the muscles that are holding the body in a particular position. This in turn will improve the results of each alignment. Likewise, incorporating rehabilitation will strengthen those muscles to hold the body’s structure as it should.

Our body is designed to function a certain way; however, life sometimes gets in the way. Years of improper posture, accidents, childbirth, or aging can have a negative affect on how our body is aligned. Trigger Points (Part II)

Now that you have familiarized yourself with trigger points, let’s look at how they manifest themselves in your body.  In other words, what are the symptoms indicating trigger points and the associated referral pain?  What can be done to help correct the situation?

First, it’s important to note that there are two types of trigger points – active and latent.

  • Active trigger points typically have referral pain and occur due to some injury to the muscle.  This injury can be trauma related, or it can also be the result of repetitive use, poor posture, or nerve irritation.  There is also both pain at rest and the area is tender to the touch.
  • Latent trigger points are more localized, causing a limited range of motion and weakness to the area affected.  It may or may not be painful to the touch.

It is not uncommon that active trigger points become latent, or that latent become active.  Many people may believe that when pain returns after long absence it’s a new injury.  In reality, the problem was only laying dormant and something happened to re-aggravate the same injury.

Symptoms of a trigger point can include:

  • limited range of motion
  • pain
  • dizziness
  • weakness
  • loss of coordination
  • buckling of the knees
  • ringing in the ears
  • tingling
  • urinary frequency
  • muscle fatigue
  • sweating
  • tearing of the eyes
  • tension headaches

Fortunately, there are ways to correct the situation and bring the body back into balance.  One is with trigger point massage therapy, which helps to address the knot of constricted muscles that are causing the pain.  Another option is through chiropractic adjustments.  Many times a misalignment in the skeletal system can cause undo stress on certain muscles.  Only by putting things back into alignment can this be remedied.  Ideally, the best course of treatment involves both massage and adjustments, plus strengthening the affected muscles.  Damron Chiropractic & Wellness is unique in that it offers all three therapies under one roof.  Our highly trained team of professionals work in unison to address the needs of every patient that walks through our doors.  Our goal with this approach is to get you out of pain and back to wellness, so you can get back to enjoying your life once again!

Foundation, Structure, and Function

There’s something unique you should know about Damron Chiropractic & Wellness – we utilize a team approach to every person that walks through our doors.  This team approach to wellness focuses on three parts of the body:  the foundation, the structure, and the function.  By addressing these three areas we ensure that we optimize every person’s visit and get them back to living a pain-free, active life.  We believe that by addressing the whole person the problem is truly corrected and less apt to reappear.

The Chiropractor’s role is to address the body’s structure, specifically the spine, when it is out of alignment.  This misalignment may or may not cause pain to a person, yet the body must compensate for the change in the “normal” structure of the spine.  Compensating means the muscles begin to reassign themselves to support this “new” structure which can be brought about by poor posture or an injury, for example.  Muscles that normally wouldn’t support the spine now need to.

For the Chiropractor’s spinal adjustment to have maximum benefit, it’s ideal that the muscles are in a relaxed state.  This is accomplished through massage.  By loosening the tense and restricted muscles through massage, the spine can be afforded greater mobility and shorten the journey to wellness. However, there is another step in this approach to help the body heal.  It involves reteaching the muscles to prevent the spine from resuming its former position.  That’s where strength training plays a vital role in this process.  Conditioning the muscles to function as they should helps to keep the spine functioning as it should.  Building the strength of the body helps to keep the body in a state of wellness because it can now do what it was designed to do.

Our bodies were created with each part serving the whole.  Every cell designed with a specific purpose in mind.  The lack of proper care causes a domino effect where the integrity of the whole is affected. Inflammation, excess weight, poor nutrition, inadequate sleep, medications, and lack of exercise all contribute to the decline of health and wellness.  Thoughtfully addressing the needs of the whole person, as a team, allows Damron Chiropractic and Wellness to stop the domino effect and begin to build a solid foundation from which to reach wellness.  We believe that meeting the body’s needs from a structure, foundation, and function perspective greatly enhances the overall well-being of the individual who’s seeking true wellness.

How to Keep Your Brain Healthy

In a recent edition of the Cincinnati Enquirer, there was a great article on keeping our brains healthy as we age.  The article was based on a report from the Institute of Medicine on “cognitive aging,” which is the “changes in memory, thinking speed, decision-making, problem-solving and learning that most people notice as they age.”

There were essentially three pieces of advice from the expert panel that published this report:

  • Get more exercise
  • Control your risks for cardiovascular disease
  • Be aware of medical conditions and medications that can impair your thinking

Exercising throughout your life is important, but the older you get the the studies indicate an improvement in thinking tests, especially in middle-aged and older adults.  Don’t let excuses prevent you from starting today, even if it’s the smallest of steps.  A healthy lifestyle is a journey, not a destination.

Eating a balanced diet of nutritious food is key to maintaining a healthy weight.  This plays a significant role in lowering cholesterol and blood pressure.  Not smoking is another major factor in controlling your risks for cardiovascular disease.  Being acutely aware of what you eat and how you live will help to keep your aging brain healthy.

Did you know that conditions like diabetes and sleep apnea contribute to cognitive decline? And that certain medications such as sleeping pills, antidepressants, and some sedating antihistamines have been linked to this decline as well?  Many of the chronic conditions we face today are simply the result of a poor diet and lack of exercise.  We can reverse this trend by making better choices for ourselves.  Maintaining brain health as we age is very important based on a recent survey that was conducted by the AARP.  93% of the respondents stated that brain health was “very or extremely important” but, ironically, “few knew how to protect it.”

Arthritis

Arthritis use to be a word associated with the elderly.  We knew it was painful because of the reaction the person made when moving.  Unfortunately, arthritis is one of those health problems that can affect all ages.  In fact, according to the CDC, an estimated 52.5 million adults suffer from arthritis and 1 in 250 children under the age of 18 have been diagnosed.  But what is arthritis?  What causes it?  And what can be done to minimize symptoms so one can live an active, pain-free life?

Another word for arthritis is inflammation, specifically joint inflammation.  The knee is the most common spot for arthritis to develop but it can also occur is other parts of the body as well:

  • Spine
  • Neck
  • Back
  • Shoulders
  • Elbows
  • Wrists
  • Hands
  • Fingers
  • Hips
  • Ankles
  • Heels
  • Toes

In order to identify the causes, it’s important to understand the two main forms of arthritis – Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid.  Osteoarthritis is caused by the inflammation, breakdown, and the loss of cartilage in the joints.  It is the most common type of arthritis that progresses over time and is said by many – “has no cure.”  However, preventative steps can be taken to reduce the likelihood of its occurrence, or if you already suffer from it, steps can be taken to halt its progression.  Typically it affects people over the age of 40, especially women, but it can also develop in younger people, too, which is known as juvenile arthritis. The causes can be linked to poor diet, obesity, a prior injury or joint condition, muscular imbalance over time, family history, age, and your sex.

Rheumatoid arthritis is different in that it is an autoimmune disease which means the body’s immune system attacks the lining of the joint, also known as synovial membrane, causing it to become inflamed and swollen.  As the disease progresses it can cause painful deformity and immobility in an individual. According to the Arthritis Foundation, “nearly three times as many women have the disease as men.”  The risk factors for rheumatoid arthritis include a family history, age, and being a woman.  The reason it affects more women is due to a lower percentage of muscle mass, which continues to decline later in life, especially during and after childbirth and menopause.

The symptoms of both types of arthritis include stiffness, pain, redness, swelling, and decreased range of motion which can significantly affect quality of life.  And while there is no known cure, there are many steps a person can take to minimize symptoms:

  • Strength training
  • Weight loss
  • Exercise
  • Heating pads or ice packs
  • Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS)
  • Yoga or Tai Chi
  • Massage therapy

Life may throw us many curve balls.  We simply course-correct and continue on our journey living our best life – today.

The Stress “Norm”

It’s difficult to slow down and “smell the roses” in a society that is conditioned to believe it’s normal to be busy, overscheduled, and that we can have it all – and at the same time.  While this may be true, it does come at a price.  Initially, we may not even realize that we are paying anything at all for our hectic lifestyles.  In fact, when everyone else is doing it too, it appears that we’re on the right track and destined for success whether it’s with our professional, personal, or family life.   Unfortunately, there comes a time when we see, and feel, what it cost us to live that life.

Stress is not necessarily bad for us.  There are times when stress can help elevate our game during an interview or important presentation, improve our performance, and help us survive danger.  Stress releases chemicals that create more energy and strength, plus keep us sharp and effective.  However, continual stress can take a negative toll on us, especially if we are not fully aware of it.

Every day we experience stress but many times that stress is barely palpable.  It may ebb and flow depending on the time of day, peaking during the rush to work, multi-tasking to get the dinner prepared and the kids homework completed, or meeting that project deadline by 4pm.  One moment of stress isn’t harmful, but if we look at our lives as an hourglass, where each grain of sand represents a stress, it quickly adds up.  Before we know it, our baseline for stress becomes higher because we have become accustomed to that new norm.  Our normal now is stress, we don’t know or feel any different.  We have conditioned ourselves quite well.

The problem with extended periods of stress is the effect it has on our bodies and therefore our quality of life.   The effects can be emotional, physical, and chemical.  Symptoms of prolonged stress include:

  • Headaches
  • Muscle Tension and Contraction
  • Upset Stomach
  • Elevated Blood Pressure
  • Chest Pain
  • Sleeping Problems
  • Jaw Clenching and Teeth Grinding
  • Moodiness and Short Temper
  • Frequent infections, colds

Being aware of the signs of stress is the first step towards improvement.  Then next is taking steps to identify the stressor(s) and addressing the impact it is causing on our body.  While there are many things we can do to recalibrate and improve things like:

  • Removing or minimizing exposure to the stressor
  • Meditation
  • Exercise
  • Improved sleep
  • Better nutrition

There are times though when seeking professional care is needed to help alleviate the problems caused by stress.   A Chiropractor can deliver that solution with their highly specialized training of the spine and the nervous system.  Providing adjustments releases tension that allows the body to slowly return to the optimal balanced and relaxed state.  It also improves blood circulation and reduces spinal nerve irritation that begins the process of healing.  There are also other therapies that a Chiropractor can recommend like massage therapy, relaxation techniques, and nutritional supplements.

While stress might be a permanent fixture in all of our lives, living with its repercussions doesn’t have to be.

Dr. Damron established DCW because he was fed up with the current health model. Statistics continue to show an increase in pharmaceutical prescriptions to patients every day. Although he does believe some medications are necessary, he believes the majority of what is prescribed is actually harmful to the patient’s long-term health, creating another set of healthcare issues as a result. Dr. Damron believes DCW’s unique approach to achieving overall wellness will revolutionize the healthcare industry through collaborative care utilizing chiropractic, massage therapy, rehabilitation, and nutrition. The DCW focus addresses the whole person versus a only symptom and uncovers the root cause. He also believes that education is vital to sustaining a healthier more vibrant lifestyle as well. His goal is to create a healthier society and a better place for our children to live.
Dr. Damron began his medical career with a Biology Degree from Wright State University in 2002. He went on to receive his Doctorate of Chiropractic from the prestigious Palmer College of Chiropractic in Port Orange, Florida in 2007. While attending Palmer, he had the opportunity to travel abroad to Madagascar and provide chiropractic care to the native Malagasy people. Dr. Damron has continued his post-graduate studies with a focus on nutrition, rehabilitation, and functional medicine.
Dr. Damron and his wife, Kristy, reside in West Chester with their two young children, Graden and Isabelle. An avid Buckeye fan, Dr. Damron enjoys playing the guitar in a band with his college friends, watching/playing any sport, cooking, reading, and attending concerts, especially the Dave Matthews Band and Foo Fighters.

She was working for a Chiropractor at the time, experiencing all the benefits that Chiropractic care had to offer, and thus began taking Dr. Washam and his siblings in for regular adjustments. Dr. Washam had been experiencing painful bouts of Strep Throat from the age of 8, which always included a 10 day course of antibiotics. While under Chiropractic care his doctor convinced him to avoid the antibiotics and receive Chiropractic adjustments instead. To his amazement, Dr. Washam’s strep throat symptoms had vanished within three days and he never had an issue from that point forward. He was so astounded by his experience that he fell in love with Chiropractic and decided that was the path for him. He wanted to commit his life to helping people through the power of Chiropractic, just as it had helped him.
Dr. Greg Washam began his college education at the University of Cincinnati, studying biology. After he made the decision to become a Chiropractor, he attended Logan College of Chiropractic in St. Louis, MO. While at Logan, he received his Bachelor of Science in Biology and Life Sciences in 2009. He received his Doctorate of Chiropractic in 2011. Dr. Washam was presented with various awards upon graduation. These included Dean’s List honors, the Senior Intern Assistant Award, and the Award of Excellence from the Division of Research. He has completed many hours of post graduate education focusing on nutrition, supplementation and injury recovery.
Dr. Washam and his wife Kassie reside in Mason, Oh with their two daughters, Lillian and Wren. In his free time, Dr. Washam enjoys cooking, exploring new restaurants, touring local craft breweries and reading. He also spends a great deal of time outdoors with his family and his Beagle, Willow. Dr. Washam is a music enthusiast and listens to all genres of music. He especially loves classic rock from the 60’s and 70’s. His favorite band of all time is Led Zeppelin.

Brooke had never been to a medical office where she really felt like they cared more about her than her money until she came to DCW as a patient. DCW made it so easy to arrange financial payment with, they were compassionate, dedicated and most importantly 100% honest. The team addressed all aspects of her health and well-being, above and beyond chiropractic care. Her initial impression of chiropractic offices were that they would only adjust then send her on her way. She realized that she was wrong. Because of her experience as a patient at DCW she realized she wanted to pursue a career within it. She saw everything she wanted in healthcare at DCW. Finally, a place where patient care really comes first! She comes to DCW with a degree in Nursing and a background in finance. When someone asks her “Why DCW?” she cannot think of one reason why not.
Brooke has a background in business finance and computer technology prior to the start of her medical career. She attended Southern State and obtained an Associate’s Degree in Science, R.N. Sh began working from DCW in December of 2014.
Brooke has five beautiful girls from 15 to 6 years old. She is married to Jamey Snyder who has two boys of his own. She lives on a two acre farm in the country with horses, dogs, cats, and a pot belly pig. Brooke enjoys spending time with her very active family and watching their kids play sports.

Nicole always wanted a career that was focused on helping people. It wasn’t until she drove past the Dayton School of Medical Massage on a daily basis that it became clear what she was meant to do. She enrolled as soon as she could and it has been the best decision she has ever made. She loves the feeling of knowing she has alleviated someone’s pain and possibly made their day better in some way. She had been working alongside chiropractors for over 7 years before joining the DCW team. Before DCW she never really felt her opinions and insights were valued or even asked for, which she felt hindered patient care and the effectiveness of each treatment. At DCW she feels valued and part of a practice that is focused on changing the approach of wellness with cohesive and effective patient care.
Nicole is a graduate of the Dayton School of Medical Massage and obtained her license in 2008. She utilizes Deep Tissue, Swedish and Thai massage techniques to relieve pain, tension, and stress while increasing range of motion and flexibility.
Nicole is married to her husband of 5 years and they one daughter, Rylee, and one child on the way due in September 2016. As a family they enjoy camping, hiking and spending time at the lake during the summer.

Erika Pantona, Insurance Specialist

Erika started coming to DCW in 2010 after spending two years in substantial pain after an injury. She had spent those two years at various specialists and taking medications to simply get up in the morning due to the pain. She was 18 when she found herself facing a major, life altering surgery (SI Fusion) and realized there must be another way. When she began her treatment plan at DCW she started to have days with little or no pain. She stopped taking her medications and realized they had been affecting her overall mood. In 2015 Erika joined the DCW team because they allowed her to live her life once again. She wants to prevent others from living in pain like she did unnecessarily, and to receive the benefits of chiropractic care.
Erika is well versed in the insurance industry with her previous employment at Express Scripts and Anthem.
Erika has two siblings and resides in Liberty Township. In her spare time she enjoys traveling and hiking with her family.

After moving to Ohio in 2010, I was in need of some relief from minor pain associated with working in customer service fields for 15 years. I was interested in seeking alternative forms of therapy and found a chiropractor in our small town. After going for a few visits, the therapy seemed somewhat outdated compared to what I had researched. In talking with my husband, he remembered that he knew someone who was a chiropractor. After just a few visits with Dr. Damron, I definitely noticed a difference in his techniques and style. It was nice to see results and feel like I was being listened to as a patient, not just heard…something you don’t always feel with doctors. After being a patient for several years, the opportunity came about to join the DCW team. It would be something different from what I had done in my past, however I knew my passion for working with people would translate well into helping patients receive the best care possible. I believed in the mission of DCW as a patient, and I am excited to be part of living that mission every day. 
 I am originally from St. Louis, MO. I graduated from the University of Missouri – Columbia with a degree in Secondary Education – Language Arts. I worked in restaurant/catering management for several years before starting a career in retail management and training.
In that position, I met my husband, Matt, who is from Wilmington, OH. After we got married in 2010, I moved to Wilmington. Realizing retail wasn’t where my heart was any longer, I began working as a substitute teacher in the Clinton County area. Matt and I live in Wilmington with our 6 year old German Shepard, Dale. I enjoy camping, boating, riding 4-wheelers, and spending time with family and friends. I love St. Louis Cardinals baseball and am a recently converted Cincinnati Bengals fan.
