Myth #5: Once you start seeing a chiropractor you can never stop.

This is the most interesting of all the myths. Perhaps because it uses the word never, like it’s some sort of consequence for choosing to see a chiropractor. It is incredibly easy to create a distorted viewpoint if you do not have all the facts. History has shown us that time and again, from thinking the world is flat to the moon being made of cheese. Likewise, the chiropractic healthcare profession has suffered from the same distortion at the hands of pervasive misinformation.

Yes, there are certain things in life you can never stop:

  • breathing
  • eating
  • drinking water
  • sleeping
  • paying taxes

However, chiropractic care is definitely not one of them, because here are the facts:

  • Many people choose to seek treatment from a chiropractor because they are in pain. Once the source of the pain is corrected, further adjustments can go one of two ways – as needed or stopping. The ultimate goal is educating the patient on how to listen to their body. By listening, they will know if their body is out of alignment and needs adjusting.
  • Wellness care is an option that some individuals choose from a chiropractor, rather than waiting for a problem to arise. As a result, this means periodic visits to keep their body in alignment. This is considered preventative healthcare. Still, the patient dictates when they seek out care, because it could be once a month or once a week.
  • A chiropractor is a person’s partner on their journey to wellness. Just as a dentist or an optometrist is.
  • Sometimes is takes time to correct a problem for a patient, due to the length of time they have been suffering from the ailment. This is normal. It is similar to how braces slowly move teeth. A person can wear braces for up to 2 years to get that perfect smile.

The truth is that seeing a chiropractor does not keep you going forever. Seems like chiropractic care is one of the best kept secrets out there today.

Myth #4: A Chiropractor is not a real doctor.

If you look up the word ‘doctor‘ you will find the following definitions:

“a person skilled or specializing in healing arts” (Merriam-Webster)

“a person licensed to practice medicine” (Dictionary.com)

Most people equate the word ‘doctor‘ with the person you see when you are injured or sick. However, this is not entirely true. What limits our understanding of a doctor is our experiences and awareness. It’s like being born and raised in a particular part of the country and never being exposed to the rest of the world. Our understanding is limited by our experiences. The fact that we have not been exposed to the rest of the world does not mean it doesn’t exist, or that there aren’t better places to live.

The modern-day medical field is filled with highly reputable and qualified physicians. However, it is also heavily driven by the pharmaceutical industry. We have been conditioned through advertising to look for solutions to our ailments with pharmaceuticals. In fact, as of 2015, direct-to-consumer advertising jumped 19% from the previous year to $5.4 billion (Kantar Media).  This industry only makes money if we are sick.

Doctors of Chiropractic are fundamentally different from what many would consider “regular doctors” largely because of their approach to wellness. Yet, the schooling for each is just as intense. Plus, they both have written and oral state boards to pass at the state and national levels. Chiropractors do not rely on prescription medications to treat their patients. Rather, wellness is achieved holistically where the root cause of pain is found and corrected.

Ironically, the Latin root for ‘doctor‘ is actually ‘teacher.’ When a person chooses the field of chiropractic as their profession, they are making a decision to pursue a career that combats the pharma industry. A chiropractor is most certainly a real doctor, just as a medical doctor is. Yet what makes them different from each other is their approach to health and wellness. At the end of the day, we need to decide how we are going to treat our body. We can constantly be on the defensive, only reacting when there is a problem. Or, we can be proactive with our health. Allowing our body to do what it does best, heal. That is the essence of chiropractic care.

Myth #3: Chiropractic Care Is Only for Adults

Myth #3: Chiropractic care is only for adults.

In many fields of care there exists a separation between adult and children. Whether it is dental care, hospital care, general medical care, or even skin care. There is nothing wrong with the approach. For example, sometimes a dentist just doesn’t want to deal with a squirming child as a patient. Or perhaps a doctor prefers to work with children rather than adults. And while the approach to an adult and a child are different, fundamentally, the needs are the same. Both have teeth, a body, and skin.

A chiropractor should not be synonymous with adult care. Rather, a chiropractor should be synonymous with family care. That’s right. Family care. From a pregnant mother, to a newborn, toddler, teenager, adult, and senior citizen. And while the techniques might be slightly different depending on the age of the patient, the end goal is always the same – optimal spinal health.

Since chiropractors have the ability to effectively work with both the young and old, we should address the benefits for each age group. First of all, let us begin with the benefits of chiropractic care to the pregnant woman:

  • providing pain relief to the back, neck and joints;
  • helping to control symptoms of nausea;
  • and potentially reducing the time of labor and delivery.

For the newborn and infant, the benefits of chiropractic care include:

  • better sleep patterns,
  • healthy brain development,
  • and a strengthened immune system.

Toddlers can benefit with:

  • behavioral improvements,
  • proactive treatment for acute trauma from falls and accidental injuries,
  • and with correcting bed-wetting.

When the child becomes a teenager, regular chiropractic visits can help with:

  • recovery from a sports injury,
  • reversing text neck,
  • and improving poor posture.

While as an adult, maintaining good health is the ideal. Adjustments assist with this by:

  • reducing headaches,
  • stimulating the immune system,
  • and lowering stress.

Finally, for our senior years, visits to the chiropractor are beneficial for the following reasons:

  • to improve mobility,
  • to provide better balance and coordination,
  • and help with pain relief.

In conclusion, chiropractic care is truly for everyone. And, yet, while every patient has specific needs, the treatment given is modified to match them. This is the perfect partnership for an individual to live a healthy life.

Seems like this is one field that does not need to separate the care between an adult and child. As a result, you get all the care you need for your entire family under one roof.

Myth #2: Chiropractic adjustments are dangerous.

Danger lurks around every corner. Simply walking out the door in the morning invites the risk of danger. While we cannot escape it, we can minimize our risk of injury through proper training, awareness, plus other control measures. Fire, driving, and alcohol are dangerous; however, with control and knowledge we can make these things safer. For example, fire is a danger, but we can use things like a fire pit to control the flames. Driving a car can be dangerous. But we need to earn a license first to drive. Alcohol is dangerous, but using moderation and a designated driver minimizes that danger. 

On the surface, we can say that many things are dangerous. But usually because they are unfamiliar to us. Chiropractic care is one of those things. Many people believe that these doctors only “crack” backs. At face value, that sounds dangerous, yet this misconception couldn’t be further from the truth.

The reality is that chiropractic adjustments are extremely safe. In fact, RAND Corporation, a nonprofit research organization in the U.S. developed to keep the world safe and healthy, conducted a study to determine the safety of these adjustments. The study found that the risk of serious complications is only one in a million. This risk is smaller than the odds of you being struck by lightning, which coincidentally is 1 in 700,000.

Misunderstanding breeds falsehoods. History tells us that. It is no different for the field of chiropractic. The truth is that chiropractic treatment is one of the safest, drug-free, and non-invasive therapies available for neuromusculoskeletal system (nerves, muscles, bones). It is also more cost-effective, too. Why? Because the root cause is identified and corrected, rather than just addressing the symptoms. 

Riding a bike, driving a car, playing a sport, eating fast food are all dangerous, yet, we still do it. We assume the risk, thinking that nothing will happen to us. The risk of suffering from a complication with a chiropractic adjustment is small compared to the risk of being injured while driving or even on the job. Yet we do them every day.
It’s time to correct the myth that chiropractic adjustments are dangerous. The people who believe this are missing out on a healthcare option that can improve their quality of life and eliminate pain, once and for all.

Myth #1: Seeing a Chiropractor is Expensive

Expensive is a relative term. What is considered expensive for one person may not be for another. It may have nothing to do cost, but rather value. Take cars, for example. Many people chose to purchase a Lexus or a Mercedes because of the perceived quality and prestige behind the brand. These people feel that the expense involved is far worth it. The same can be said about appliances, clothing, furniture, vacations, and education.

Saying something is expensive can also be used as an excuse, too. Where is the line of demarcation dividing what is expensive and what is not for a person?  Perhaps the line moves depending on what the item is. As for chiropractic care, saying that it is expensive is highly subjective. First, is there a price tag you would put on good health? What about a price tag to get that good health back? The amount of money spent on medications for bad health is astounding. In fact, in the U.S. alone the pharmaceutical industry is valued at over 413 billion dollars (2014). Many would say that this is not health care, but disease care.

Chiropractic care should be viewed under the same light as dental care – with the goal being preventative care. You visit the dentist twice a year to prevent getting a cavity. If you choose to not have regular check ups, what happens to your oral health? It begins to decline, resulting in cavities and gum disease, not to mention tooth decay. Later in life, these same people need to invest in crowns, caps, and dentures. All expensive procedures, which could have been prevented with regular dental visits.

The reality is that chiropractic care is not any more expensive than other doctor care. Most insurance allow for chiropractic care, even if it’s not 100% coverage. But the most important fact with chiropractic care is the end goal. Ultimately, a chiropractor’s goal is to effectively address the symptoms you are experiencing by correcting the root cause. This process brings you out of pain and discomfort and into wellness and improved health going forward. Similar to regular dental visits. Being proactive with your health through chiropractic care is the most cost effective health care you can find.

How is cost effective, proactive, and wellness equated to expensive? It all boils down to perspective.

Top Chiropractic Myths Debunked

Chiropractic myths permeate our society. In fact, this is the primary reason why a majority of adults have not seen a chiropractor. Unfortunately, the facts do not support these objections. Rather than search for the truth, many choose to follow a path created by big business because seeing is believing. That is not to say that what is advertised does not work. It’s quite the opposite actually. However, just because something works does that also mean it is the best option? Or the only option for that matter?

Advertising creates the visibility a business wants to generate revenue. Why do you think we eagerly await those Super Bowl ads every year? But, did you know that those commercials cost $5 million in 2017? What type of business can afford this huge investment? The question we need to ask ourselves is this, does a high level of visibility automatically give a business credibility?  The answer should be no. Otherwise, why support small, local businesses.

Chiropractic, as a business, does not have the budget to advertise at the level that Wendy’s, Coca Cola, KFC, and Mars did this year. But does this level of visibility mean these products are good for our health? One might argue that they have contributed to our society’s obesity epidemic.

We must not settle for what information is pushed at us either from television, print, radio, or online. That information was paid to be put in front of us. Rather than accept things at face value, we should choose to advocate for ourselves. Meaning, we should dig deeper and learn what can about ALL options that are available to us. Then make an informed decision about what is BEST for us. Chiropractic care falls in this category, which is why several myths exist that cause people to miss out on this highly effective and beneficial health care.

Inflammation Foods

Inflammation is a word that makes a person think of a response to an injury or infection. We suspect a problem when we see skin that is red and swollen. This type of inflammation is obvious. However, there is another type of inflammation that we cannot see that is much more problematic and dangerous. It is the inflammation that lies beneath the surface that can create health risks such as heart disease, stroke, and even cancer.

Food is the main contributor to this type of inflammation, specifically the Western Diet.

  • Sugar (also known as fructose, sucrose, or any word ending in -ose)
  • Saturated fats (pizza and cheese are the biggest contributors)
  • Trans fats (fast food restaurants, processed snacks, frozen breakfasts, donuts, crackers and cookies)
  • Excess omega-6 (most salad dressings, mayonnaise, and oils such as corn, soy, peanut and vegetable)
  • Refined carbohydrates (white flour products, white rice, and white potatoes)
  • Mono-sodium glutamate, or MSG (added to some prepared Asian foods, soy sauce, deli meats, and salad dressings)
  • Gluten and casein (wheat, rye, and barley products; whey products)
  • Aspartame (sodas, gum, candies, yogurt)
  • Alcohol

To know if you are suffering from chronic inflammation, your Chiropractor can perform specific testing. But, maybe you’d like to know what to look for first. While these symptoms are not definitive, they do give you a reason to look further:

  • You’re feeling depressed.
  • Your stomach is hurting quite often.
  • Tired is your middle name.

These clues do not mean you are suffering from chronic inflammation, however, they do potentially indicate a problem. Look at what you are eating each day. Is it filled with many of the inflammatory foods listed above? Have you ever done a cleanse? Many times, the first step is realizing there is a problem. Once you know, steps can be taken to remedy it.

Eliminate Your Pain and Discomfort

We are creatures of habit. Whether it’s a restaurant we like to frequent, coffee made a certain way, or sleeping on a particular side of the bed. We know what we like. In fact, we like our routines and habits so much that we continue to do them even when we are experiencing pain or other discomfort. Typically, rationalizing to ourselves that “it isn’t that bad” or “I’m sure it will feel better in the morning.” Sometimes we even resort to the internet, looking for reasons why we are feeling the way we are. Again, rationalizing that we can “self treat” regardless what it is. But at what point do the scales tip and we realize we need to seek professional help?

While people have different pain thresholds, pain alone can be enough to cause a person to get medical care. However, many times it isn’t the pain that makes this happen. It boils down to what that person is missing out on, or giving up, that they then decide to finally do something about their problem. For example, a golfer enjoys a weekly round with his buddies. He has been dealing with shoulder discomfort for a while, yet it isn’t bad enough to affect his game. However, gradually the discomfort turned to pain and his golf swing is way off. It is Steve’s frustration that leds him to seek out a chiropractor, not the discomfort and pain.

At Damron Chiropractic & Wellness, we see other similar scenarios with our patients. It is not the pain per se that brings them to us, rather what the pain is preventing them from doing or doing well.

The list could go on and on. We do not need to wait for this level of severity before we see a chiropractor. Regular visits to a chiropractor will help to keep our body functioning as it should. We are only given so many days in our life. Why waste any of them not feeling our best, especially when we can do something about preventing it today?

Text Neck

On average, the human head weighs between 10 to 12 pounds. Proper posture ensures the weight is evenly distributed at the top of the spine. With the advent of technology and mobile devices, we find ourselves with a posture epidemic. One that has shifted the alignment in such a way that has created a set of symptoms we now call “text neck.” As our head moves forward and leans down it increases the strain of the weight of our head on the rest of our body. Thus creating a domino effect of pain and discomfort as our body compensates for this change in posture.

What we may not realize is that hunching even slightly to look at our mobile device increases the strain our body must bear. For example, looking down only at a 15 degree angle increases the strain on our neck by 27 pounds. Likewise, based on the picture above, a 30 degree angle strains the neck with 40 pounds, and so on. Because we are so accustomed to this poor posture, it may be difficult to imagine what this strain feels like. To help, we give our patients a 10 pound ball to hold with their elbow resting on a table. As they move the weighted ball forward it becomes increasingly difficult to hold it. Eventually, they are unable to any longer.

The point is this, we are creating undo stress on our neck, spine, and muscles. This stress creates compression between the vertebrae which then leads to chronic neck and shoulder pain, in addition to headaches. Because of the trends in technology, many people do not even realize the cause of these symptoms. The good news is that we have the power to correct text neck with a few simple exercises and being more mindful of what we are doing.

First, pay attention to where you are holding your device. Raise it up so you are looking straight at it versus down. If you are looking at a laptop or desktop, do what you can to prevent yourself from looking down at it. Adjust the height of your chair or table. To help relieve the stain on your neck and shoulders you can also do this simple exercise of squeezing your shoulder blades together. You can also work on keeping your ears over your shoulders as much as possible throughout the day, too. Text neck is also treated by a chiropractor and massage therapist, as well. Regular visits to both will help to keep your body in alignment, improve posture, and eliminate any pain you might be experiencing.

Technology will always be a part of our world. Rather than modifying our body to suit technology, we must make technology modify to suit us. If we don’t our body will let us know with symptoms of pain and discomfort.

Why a Car Accident Is Never Minor

Why do we minimize pain? It seems that no matter the situation, from truly minor to extremely major, we brush it off and move on as if nothing happened. Watch any sporting event and observe how players experience serious physical contact yet get right back in the game again. Or the people on the side of the road after a car accident, declining the trip to the emergency room because they “feel fine.” Feeling fine does not mean our body is fine. If that was the case, then we would know the moment a cancer cell becomes a threat to our health.

A police officer was referred to DCW after experiencing a minor crash during a high speed chase that he walked away from. On the surface he appeared uninjured. Yes, there is no immediate trauma that requires emergency attention; however, what about the micro-trauma inside the body from the impact?

The average car weighs 4,000 pounds, or 2-tons. In the case of the cop, he was pursuing a suspect in his car and traveling fast. This energy of motion is called kinetic energy. The faster the motion the higher the energy. While there are many safety features in a car to protect us like seat belts, air bags, and shatterproof glass, we are still delicate flesh traveling inside a metal container. Upon impact, the car is designed to absorb as much kinetic energy as possible. However, the faster the car is moving the less time the car has to absorb the energy. So, where does it go then? To us. Our body absorbs it.

To ensure that our body is functioning as it should after any car accident, a visit to the chiropractor is a must. Why? Because symptoms may not present themselves until several weeks later. Minor misalignment in the spine can affect different parts of the body and can cause significant problems later on. Be proactive and see your chiropractor after a car accident, no matter how minor. This approach will save you unnecessary pain and suffering, not to mention money.

Dr. Andrew Damron, Chiropractor

Why ChiropracticProfessional Experience Personal Information
Dr. Damron established DCW because he was fed up with the current health model. Statistics continue to show an increase in pharmaceutical prescriptions to patients every day. Although he does believe some medications are necessary, he believes the majority of what is prescribed is actually harmful to the patient’s long-term health, creating another set of healthcare issues as a result. Dr. Damron believes DCW’s unique approach to achieving overall wellness will revolutionize the healthcare industry through collaborative care utilizing chiropractic, massage therapy, rehabilitation, and nutrition. The DCW focus addresses the whole person versus a only symptom and uncovers the root cause. He also believes that education is vital to sustaining a healthier more vibrant lifestyle as well. His goal is to create a healthier society and a better place for our children to live.
Dr. Damron began his medical career with a Biology Degree from Wright State University in 2002. He went on to receive his Doctorate of Chiropractic from the prestigious Palmer College of Chiropractic in Port Orange, Florida in 2007. While attending Palmer, he had the opportunity to travel abroad to Madagascar and provide chiropractic care to the native Malagasy people. Dr. Damron has continued his post-graduate studies with a focus on nutrition, rehabilitation, and functional medicine.
Dr. Damron and his wife, Kristy, reside in West Chester with their two young children, Graden and Isabelle. An avid Buckeye fan, Dr. Damron enjoys playing the guitar in a band with his college friends, watching/playing any sport, cooking, reading, and attending concerts, especially the Dave Matthews Band and Foo Fighters.

Dr. Washam was introduced to Chiropractic by his mother at the age of 16. She was working for a Chiropractor at the time, experiencing all the benefits that Chiropractic care had to offer, and thus began taking Dr. Washam and his siblings in for regular adjustments. Dr. Washam had been experiencing painful bouts of Strep Throat from the age of 8, which always included a 10 day course of antibiotics. While under Chiropractic care his doctor convinced him to avoid the antibiotics and receive Chiropractic adjustments instead. To his amazement, Dr. Washam’s strep throat symptoms had vanished within three days and he never had an issue from that point forward. He was so astounded by his experience that he fell in love with Chiropractic and decided that was the path for him. He wanted to commit his life to helping people through the power of Chiropractic, just as it had helped him.
Dr. Greg Washam began his college education at the University of Cincinnati, studying biology. After he made the decision to become a Chiropractor, he attended Logan College of Chiropractic in St. Louis, MO. While at Logan, he received his Bachelor of Science in Biology and Life Sciences in 2009. He received his Doctorate of Chiropractic in 2011. Dr. Washam was presented with various awards upon graduation. These included Dean’s List honors, the Senior Intern Assistant Award, and the Award of Excellence from the Division of Research. Dr. Washam and his wife Kassie reside in Mason, Oh with their two daughters, Lillian and Wren. In his free time, Dr. Washam enjoys cooking, exploring new restaurants, touring local craft breweries and reading. He also spends a great deal of time outdoors with his family and his Beagle, Willow. Because of her experience as a patient at DCW she realized she wanted to pursue a career within it. She saw everything she wanted in healthcare at DCW. Finally, a place where patient care really comes first! She comes to DCW with a degree in Nursing and a background in finance. When someone asks her “Why DCW?” she cannot think of one reason why not.
Brooke has a background in business finance and computer technology prior to the start of her medical career. She attended Southern State and obtained an Associate’s Degree in Science, R.N. Sh began working from DCW in December of 2014.
Brooke has five beautiful girls from 15 to 6 years old. She is married to Jamey Snyder who has two boys of his own. She lives on a two acre farm in the country with horses, dogs, cats, and a pot belly pig. Brooke enjoys spending time with her very active family and watching their kids play sports.

Nicole always wanted a career that was focused on helping people. It wasn’t until she drove past the Dayton School of Medical Massage on a daily basis that it became clear what she was meant to do. She enrolled as soon as she could and it has been the best decision she has ever made. She loves the feeling of knowing she has alleviated someone’s pain and possibly made their day better in some way. She had been working alongside chiropractors for over 7 years before joining the DCW team. Before DCW she never really felt her opinions and insights were valued or even asked for, which she felt hindered patient care and the effectiveness of each treatment. At DCW she feels valued and part of a practice that is focused on changing the approach of wellness with cohesive and effective patient care.
Nicole is a graduate of the Dayton School of Medical Massage and obtained her license in 2008. She utilizes Deep Tissue, Swedish and Thai massage techniques to relieve pain, tension, and stress while increasing range of motion and flexibility.
Nicole is married to her husband of 5 years and they one daughter, Rylee, and one child on the way due in September 2016. As a family they enjoy camping, hiking and spending time at the lake during the summer.

Erika Pantona, Insurance Specialist

Erika started coming to DCW in 2010 after spending two years in substantial pain after an injury. She had spent those two years at various specialists and taking medications to simply get up in the morning due to the pain. She was 18 when she found herself facing a major, life altering surgery (SI Fusion) and realized there must be another way. When she began her treatment plan at DCW she started to have days with little or no pain. She stopped taking her medications and realized they had been affecting her overall mood. In 2015 Erika joined the DCW team because they allowed her to live her life once again. She wants to prevent others from living in pain like she did unnecessarily, and to receive the benefits of chiropractic care.
Erika is well versed in the insurance industry with her previous employment at Express Scripts and Anthem.
Erika has two siblings and resides in Liberty Township. In her spare time she enjoys traveling and hiking with her family.

After moving to Ohio in 2010, I was in need of some relief from minor pain associated with working in customer service fields for 15 years. I was interested in seeking alternative forms of therapy and found a chiropractor in our small town. After going for a few visits, the therapy seemed somewhat outdated compared to what I had researched. In talking with my husband, he remembered that he knew someone who was a chiropractor. After just a few visits with Dr. Damron, I definitely noticed a difference in his techniques and style. It was nice to see results and feel like I was being listened to as a patient, not just heard…something you don’t always feel with doctors. After being a patient for several years, the opportunity came about to join the DCW team. It would be something different from what I had done in my past, however I knew my passion for working with people would translate well into helping patients receive the best care possible. I believed in the mission of DCW as a patient, and I am excited to be part of living that mission every day. 
 I am originally from St. Louis, MO. I graduated from the University of Missouri – Columbia with a degree in Secondary Education – Language Arts. I worked in restaurant/catering management for several years before starting a career in retail management and training.
In that position, I met my husband, Matt, who is from Wilmington, OH. After we got married in 2010, I moved to Wilmington. Realizing retail wasn’t where my heart was any longer, I began working as a substitute teacher in the Clinton County area. Matt and I live in Wilmington with our 6 year old German Shepard, Dale. I enjoy camping, boating, riding 4-wheelers, and spending time with family and friends. I love St. Louis Cardinals baseball and am a recently converted Cincinnati Bengals fan.
