Knowledge IS Power

I’m sure you’ve seen those commercials featuring a famous celebrity talking into the camera about an important social issue like education or the environment. It’s a long standing initiative by NBC titled “The More You Know” as a public service initiative to share knowledge to improve lives. Each commercial was thought provoking and personal with the underlying message that the more you know about a particular topic, you will make better decisions for yourself and those you care about.

Educating ourselves starts from birth. We learn to find our thumb to comfort ourselves, we learn to crawl then walk and run, feed ourselves, and play. It continues into school, summer employment, and athletics. Growing up, our brains are like a sponge, absorbing information to make us smarter. We knew that knowledge was a requirement to get us into adulthood so we could become an independent, contributing person in our society. However, reaching that benchmark does not mean that learning stops there. In fact, it is only the beginning. Learning is a life-long process that earns us new jobs, promotions, higher education, plus takes us through all of life’s transitions like parenting and retirement. You see, the more you know, the more you empower yourself to not only do the right thing, but to understand why it’s the right thing.

Many would argue that our present day health crisis is a result of a lack of knowledge coupled with taking things for granted. This path has limited our ideas of what is really good for us and how to keep ourselves truly healthy. We should never stop acquiring knowledge, especially when it comes to our health. Depending on who is delivering the message, the information shared might be skewed to fit a particular agenda. This phenomenon isn’t new. Politicians, lawyers, and lobbyists take some information and use it to fit whatever purpose they need it for – to help win votes, defend or prosecute an accused person, or gain support for new legislation. In the healthcare industry, pharmaceutical companies have the money to advertise everywhere. Over and over again. The question we need to ask ourselves is, does that mean that’s the truth?

Recently, cholesterol lowering drugs have come under fire for having an adverse affect on a person’s insulin level, causing a higher incidence of type 2 diabetes. Does this new truth affect the advertising on the companies who make this drug? The point is this, educate yourself on what it really means to be healthy. Do not take the latest fads, diets, and drugs at face value. The more you know, the more good you can do for yourself in the long run. Don’t let misconceptions dictate the course of wellness you take, either. Misconceptions about professions like chiropractors have kept people in pain longer than they should be. However, when people discover the immense benefits they are amazed.

Don’t let the volume of advertising you see on television and in print determine how to best care for yourself and those you love. Choose to go deeper and arm yourself with the best defense – knowledge. Because the more you know, the more you can empower yourself.

Seeking Balance

There seems to be a fundamental balance in life that requires the presence of two opposing forces for it to be achieved. Much like a sea saw that moves both up and then down depending on the size and force of either side. We realize that it is only through these two opposing forces that any type of movement can occur. In fact, without both sides nothing happens. There are many examples of opposing forces creating balance all around us:

  • If there is success, then we must have failure.
  • If there is joy, then we must experience sadness
  • If there is good health, there exists illness
  • If good exists, then so too must evil.
  • If there is light, then there must be darkness.

You see, the existence of one side creates the existence of the other. Saying something is truly beautiful implies a comparison to something that is not.

Every day at Damron Chiropractic & Wellness, two opposing forces collide. Every person that walks through our doors is seeking to achieve balance in their life as it relates to good health and overall wellness. It was only due to an imbalance that they sought us in the first place. However, maintaining balance is really a daily task. We must take an active role to ensure that it becomes a reality, otherwise we leave our future to chance which might be why a majority of our population is dealing with poor health today.

When we are young, we can afford to skimp on taking care of ourselves. We can pull all-nighters to study for exams, eat junk food galore, or jump into a spontaneous pick-up basketball game without any significant impact to our health. Fast forward to our 30s, 40s, or 50s and doing these things would end us up in surgery or, at a minimum take, days to recover from. Our bodies simply don’t rebound like it did when we were young which is why balance is imperative for healthy aging. Maintaining this balance will allow us to do the things we want to do without unnecessary consequences that derail our life.

Choosing Your Chiropractor

Choosing a Chiropractor is not unlike choosing any other healthcare professional.  It’s a very personal relationship where you truly feel he or she has your best interests at heart.  But there are other things to consider as well because you are essentially advocating for yourself.  Good health is our greatest asset and it should never be taken for granted.  It needs to be earned through daily effort.  Partnering with a Chiropractor can help you achieve and maintain this asset throughout your life.  The key, however, is making sure you chose wisely.

There are many false stereotypes regarding Chiropractors, just as there are for other professions such as lawyers and politicians.  Common sense tells us that we mustn’t judge a book by its cover, but that’s exactly what we do.  We take hearsay and turn it into fact without investing the time to find out for ourselves the truth.  The end result?  Lost opportunity to benefit from the care and expertise from a committed professional.  Rushing to a snap judgement means we’d rather follow what another says.  Relying on unsubstantiated claims can have a negative impact on our lives.  Take, for example, the marketing of several consumer goods over the decades:  Tab, Olestra, nicotine, aspartame, MSG, and GMOs.  We took for granted that because it was available, it was good for us.  Years later we learned we were wrong.

Chiropractors are doctors that specialize in the musculoskeletal and nervous systems.  They practice a drug-free, hands-on approach to healthcare.  With broad diagnostic skills, they are trained to recommend therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises, in addition to nutritional, dietary, and lifestyle counseling.  They are also best known for providing spinal adjustments to help restore joint mobility that causes inflammation and pain.

The Wellness Wheel

What is the Wellness Wheel?

Truth be told, the essence of who we are is much like the spokes on a wheel.  There are many spokes that comprise the wheel, giving it motion.  Each spoke plays an instrumental role in the proper functioning of the wheel, too.  Should anything happen to those spokes – such as rust, damage, or breakage – it can affect how the wheel moves, causing a bumpy ride.  We are similar to that wheel, with each spoke representing a part of us.  It’s known as the Wellness Wheel.  The Wellness Wheel is comprised of seven key areas:

  • Physical
  • Mental
  • Spiritual
  • Social
  • Emotional
  • Intellectual
  • Occupational

When there is something broken in one aspect our our lives, it affects the whole of us.  For example, we lose our job, it affects us emotionally, occupationally, mentally, and physically.  It may also affect us in other areas as well, but the initial impact can be felt more sharply in those four.  Compartmentalizing things would be ideal, but unfortunately we are not designed that way.  What happens to us has the ability to affect every aspect of our lives, whether we want it to or not.

Looking at our lives like that of spokes on a wheel can help us see how connected things are, how one thing can affect another, and how balance improves the whole.  In the Physical realm, staying active, maintaining an ideal weight, eating a healthy diet, and exercising has a tremendous impact on the other six areas of our life.  Our mood is elevated, we feel better about ourselves, clears our mind, plus allows us to socialize with others.  Choosing to omit that Physical spoke from our daily lives has a ripple effect that, in time, we will no longer be able to ignore.  Sooner or later injury, a doctor’s visit, a friend’s comment, or simple frustration will cause us to make the decision to change.

Maintaining balance in our Wellness Wheel requires discipline and continuous effort.  It also requires self love and the investment of time.  Healthy aging doesn’t just happen for the majority of us.  While there might be those out there that inherited fantastic genes, or sheer luck, the rest of us need to be aware that our choices today affect our lives tomorrow.

Take a look at how you measure up to the Wellness Wheel.  Has it been a smooth ride or have there been some bumps in the road?  If there are bumps, are you addressing what is causing them?  A little self-inventory will go a long way in helping you live the best version of yourself.

Trigger Points (Part II)

Now that you have familiarized yourself with trigger points, let’s look at how they manifest themselves in your body.  In other words, what are the symptoms indicating trigger points and the associated referral pain?  What can be done to help correct the situation?

First, it’s important to note that there are two types of trigger points – active and latent.

  • Active trigger points typically have referral pain and occur due to some injury to the muscle.  This injury can be trauma related, or it can also be the result of repetitive use, poor posture, or nerve irritation.  There is also both pain at rest and the area is tender to the touch.
  • Latent trigger points are more localized, causing a limited range of motion and weakness to the area affected.  It may or may not be painful to the touch.

It is not uncommon that active trigger points become latent, or that latent become active.  Many people may believe that when pain returns after long absence it’s a new injury.  In reality, the problem was only laying dormant and something happened to re-aggravate the same injury.

Symptoms of a trigger point can include:

  • limited range of motion
  • pain
  • dizziness
  • weakness
  • loss of coordination
  • buckling of the knees
  • ringing in the ears
  • tingling
  • urinary frequency
  • muscle fatigue
  • sweating
  • tearing of the eyes
  • tension headaches

Fortunately, there are ways to correct the situation and bring the body back into balance.  One is with trigger point massage therapy, which helps to address the knot of constricted muscles that are causing the pain.  Another option is through chiropractic adjustments.  Many times a misalignment in the skeletal system can cause undo stress on certain muscles.  Only by putting things back into alignment can this be remedied.  Ideally, the best course of treatment involves both massage and adjustments, plus strengthening the affected muscles.  Damron Chiropractic & Wellness is unique in that it offers all three therapies under one roof.  Our highly trained team of professionals work in unison to address the needs of every patient that walks through our doors.  Our goal with this approach is to get you out of pain and back to wellness, so you can get back to enjoying your life once again!

VIP Supplements: Multivitamins

This is the last in a series of 5 on what we, at Damron Chiropractic & Wellness, consider to be the “Vital & Integral Players” – or VIPs – of the supplements necessary for healthy aging.

The word multivitamin certainly sounds credible.  We’ve probably heard the word since our youth with those Flintstone vitamins our mom would give us that tasted remarkably like candy.  It probably was no coincidence either that the commercials for those cute, little vitamins would happen during the actual cartoon.  Clever marketing at its best!  Nowadays, vitamins, or more specifically multivitamins, are found in every grocery store, pharmacy, fitness center, gym, and wellness boutique.  There are literally hundreds of different multivitamins available today, too.  So, how do we discern which is best, if we really need one, and what the real benefits are?

In order to survive and function optimally, our body needs a daily supply of essential vitamins and minerals.  If eating a healthy diet, then a multivitamin would not be needed.  However, the reality is how we actually live each day.  It is a fact that most Americans are not eating a healthy diet, which leaves our bodies lacking the essential vitamins and minerals it needs to thrive.  Multivitamins can help close this gap between what is and what it should be.  Now that we have acknowledged this gap, which of the hundreds of multivitamins is truly best for us?

Let’s start with the facts about how our bodies are designed.  Our body is uniquely created to eat and digest the food our good Earth provides us.  We have complicated things by taking that food and repackaging it with over-processing.  If we were to take full advantage of how our body is designed, then we should acknowledge that food in its purest form is best.  Therefore, a multivitamin that is created from whole foods (foods that are natural and in their purest form) rather than processed is the ideal. This would mean organic, too – no added chemicals or pesticides.

Another way to determine which multivitamin is best for you is to look for those that are certified.  In 2007, the good manufacturing practices (GMPs) were established by the FDA to ensure high quality supplements are produced and available to the public.  Other independent organizations took that a step further and offer voluntary certification programs for supplement manufacturers as well.  When researching the multivitamin alternatives, search for those that have subjected themselves to the highest of quality standards.  Examples of what to look for include:  the Natural Products Association, U.S. Pharmacopeial Convention, and NSF, in addition to the GMPs by the USFDA.

Remember, it is up to us to ensure or body receives what it needs to function at its best.  It is also up to us to keep it that way so we can age healthily.  We make choices every day that ultimately impact how well we stay on that path of wellness.

VIP Supplements: Probiotics

This is the fourth in a series of 5 on what we, at Damron Chiropractic & Wellness, consider to be the “Vital & Integral Players” – or VIPs – of the supplements necessary for healthy aging.

It seems to be everywhere.  Probiotics.  Everything from t.v. advertisements, coupons, and product labeling.  But why exactly is this the case?  Is this just another health fad like toning shoes or olestra? You’ll be happy to know  that probiotics are not a fad and are here to stay.  In fact, this VIP supplement is a great way to invest in your longterm health.

Probiotics are actually living microorganisms – bacteria and yeast.  Hearing the word bacteria, though, we typically jump to the negative, thinking disease and infection.  However, in the world of bacteria there exists both the good and the bad.  The good bacteria is what you find within your digestive system.  It is also in probiotics.  The ideal occurs when the good and bad bacteria are in balance, meaning everything is functioning as it should.  But there are times when we have an imbalance. Symptoms appear telling us so with the onset of an illness, a syndrome like Irritable Bowel, or a skin conditions such as eczema.  This is a red flag that our good bacteria needs some help from us to regain that optimal balance.

But what exactly does good bacteria do for us?  Surprisingly, these good guys serve a vital role in our overall wellbeing:

  • promotes colon health and proper functioning
  • helps to keep cholesterol in check
  • works to ensure hormone balance
  • specific vitamin formation (i.e. K)
  • creates certain digestive enzymes

It’s important to know that there are two main types of probiotics:  lactobacillus and bifidobacterium. The first is the most common and found in yogurt or other fermented foods, the second is found in some types of dairy.  Both play a key role in digestive health.  While we can get much of our probiotic needs met from the foods we eat (yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, dark chocolate, kimchi, tempeh, and miso soup), the reality is that our busy lifestyle may prevent us from doing so.  Having a quality probiotic supplement will ensure your digestive needs are being met on a daily basis.

Remember, life happens.  We eat too much of the wrong foods, we get sick, we get older, we encounter periods of stress.  As one of the VIPs of the supplement world, probiotics can help you be prepared for those bumps in the road and be that preventative maintenance you need to keep your body running as it should.

Liver Detox

Our liver rarely gets the attention it deserves when it comes to health and wellness.  Aside from being the second largest organ in the body, the liver’s role in sustaining life is rather astounding.  Take a look at the daily functions of our liver:

  • Provides digestive system support.
  • Controls blood sugar.
  • Regulates fat storage.
  • Regulates blood flow.
  • Stores and mobilizes energy.
  • Filters and breaks down the food we eat.

Yet, we make it increasingly difficult for our liver to do its job because of the sheer number of toxins we expose our body to on a daily basis.  If we stop to think about how the liver chemically breaks down everything that enters our body – from an organic apple to a glazed donut – the liver must distinguish between what to keep and what to dispose of.  In other words, keep all the nutrients that support life and prevent those that do not from being absorbed.  In addition to the food we eat, the body is also accosted every day with external toxins as well.  From the chemicals in our furniture and flooring to our face wash and body lotion.  This incredible amount of daily exposure to toxins overwhelms the liver and causes it to become “clogged,” where it simply can’t perform it’s role as effectively.  This in turn causes countless toxins to bypass the liver’s filter and either get absorbed or remain in the liver.  We need to help our liver help us.

First, how do we know if our liver isn’t functioning as optimally as it should?

  • Do you have difficulty losing weight and keeping it off?
  • Do you suffer from chronic fatigue?
  • Do you suffer from fibromyalgia?
  • Do you have a history of nausea?

If we listen, our body will give us the signs that something is amiss.  Answering yes to any of the above questions might be your first clue that your liver needs your help.

The good news is that you can do something about this situation.  With a proper plan in place, you can re-calibrate your body to regain the balance it needs to thrive.  That doesn’t mean dieting either, as almost 90% of people who go on diets actually gain back more weight than they lost.  By addressing the imbalances within our body we can then allow the weight to come off and stay off. A Fitness Epidemic

Did you know that May is National Physical Fitness and Sports month?  It doesn’t appear to be a coincidence that with summer just around the corner that this is the month to kick off a more active lifestyle.  The President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition has recently revealed some startling facts about our current state of fitness:

  • Less than 20% of adults meet the 30-minutes of recommended activity each day.
  • Obesity has doubled among adults since the early 1970s.
  • 1 in 3 children is overweight or obese.
  • Only 1 in 3 children achieves the minimum amount of physical activity they need each day.
  • 1 in 4 young children eat fast food on a typical day.
  • On average, children now spend more than seven and a half hours a day in front of a screen.
  • Fewer than 1 in 3 adults eat the recommended amount of vegetables each day.

One might argue that our country is facing an epidemic.  However, unlike a typical epidemic that occurs due to the spread of an infectious disease, this epidemic is brought on by the individual decisions we make on a daily basis that either contribute to our wellness or undermine it.  To stop this trend that only serves to decrease our quality of life, we need to question the decisions we make.  For example, do we feed our family dinner through the fast food drive-thru or do we take the time to plan the week out with menus, recipes, and grocery shopping?  Or after dinner, do we hunker down in front of the television with the family or do we head outside for a family walk or bike ride?  What do we have as snacks?  Can we substitute fruit for that bowl of ice cream at night?  Every decision that we make can be a step in the right direction.  And while it might take time to see and feel the difference, it will happen.

In honor of National Physical Fitness and Sports month, let’s make a positive change every day, even if it’s small. Those steps are the building blocks for a healthier tomorrow.  Giving ourselves and our families the gift of a long life – one rich in good health – is something we all want and truly deserve.

Foundation, Structure, and Function

There’s something unique you should know about Damron Chiropractic & Wellness – we utilize a team approach to every person that walks through our doors.  This team approach to wellness focuses on three parts of the body:  the foundation, the structure, and the function.  By addressing these three areas we ensure that we optimize every person’s visit and get them back to living a pain-free, active life.  We believe that by addressing the whole person the problem is truly corrected and less apt to reappear.

The Chiropractor’s role is to address the body’s structure, specifically the spine, when it is out of alignment.  This misalignment may or may not cause pain to a person, yet the body must compensate for the change in the “normal” structure of the spine.  Compensating means the muscles begin to reassign themselves to support this “new” structure which can be brought about by poor posture or an injury, for example.  Muscles that normally wouldn’t support the spine now need to.

For the Chiropractor’s spinal adjustment to have maximum benefit, it’s ideal that the muscles are in a relaxed state.  This is accomplished through massage.  By loosening the tense and restricted muscles through massage, the spine can be afforded greater mobility and shorten the journey to wellness. However, there is another step in this approach to help the body heal.  It involves reteaching the muscles to prevent the spine from resuming its former position.  That’s where strength training plays a vital role in this process.  Conditioning the muscles to function as they should helps to keep the spine functioning as it should.  Building the strength of the body helps to keep the body in a state of wellness because it can now do what it was designed to do.

Our bodies were created with each part serving the whole.  Every cell designed with a specific purpose in mind.  The lack of proper care causes a domino effect where the integrity of the whole is affected. Inflammation, excess weight, poor nutrition, inadequate sleep, medications, and lack of exercise all contribute to the decline of health and wellness.  Thoughtfully addressing the needs of the whole person, as a team, allows Damron Chiropractic and Wellness to stop the domino effect and begin to build a solid foundation from which to reach wellness.  We believe that meeting the body’s needs from a structure, foundation, and function perspective greatly enhances the overall well-being of the individual who’s seeking true wellness.

Dr. Damron established DCW because he was fed up with the current health model. Statistics continue to show an increase in pharmaceutical prescriptions to patients every day. Although he does believe some medications are necessary, he believes the majority of what is prescribed is actually harmful to the patient’s long-term health, creating another set of healthcare issues as a result. Dr. Damron believes DCW’s unique approach to achieving overall wellness will revolutionize the healthcare industry through collaborative care utilizing chiropractic, massage therapy, rehabilitation, and nutrition. The DCW focus addresses the whole person versus a only symptom and uncovers the root cause. He also believes that education is vital to sustaining a healthier more vibrant lifestyle as well. His goal is to create a healthier society and a better place for our children to live.
Dr. Damron began his medical career with a Biology Degree from Wright State University in 2002. He went on to receive his Doctorate of Chiropractic from the prestigious Palmer College of Chiropractic in Port Orange, Florida in 2007. While attending Palmer, he had the opportunity to travel abroad to Madagascar and provide chiropractic care to the native Malagasy people. Dr. Damron has continued his post-graduate studies with a focus on nutrition, rehabilitation, and functional medicine.
Dr. Damron and his wife, Kristy, reside in West Chester with their two young children, Graden and Isabelle. Dr. Washam was introduced to Chiropractic by his mother at the age of 16. She was working for a Chiropractor at the time, experiencing all the benefits that Chiropractic care had to offer, and thus began taking Dr. Washam and his siblings in for regular adjustments. Dr. Washam had been experiencing painful bouts of Strep Throat from the age of 8, which always included a 10 day course of antibiotics. While under Chiropractic care his doctor convinced him to avoid the antibiotics and receive Chiropractic adjustments instead. To his amazement, Dr. Washam’s strep throat symptoms had vanished within three days and he never had an issue from that point forward. He was so astounded by his experience that he fell in love with Chiropractic and decided that was the path for him. He wanted to commit his life to helping people through the power of Chiropractic, just as it had helped him.
Dr. Greg Washam began his college education at the University of Cincinnati, studying biology. After he made the decision to become a Chiropractor, he attended Logan College of Chiropractic in St. Louis, MO. While at Logan, he received his Bachelor of Science in Biology and Life Sciences in 2009. He received his Doctorate of Chiropractic in 2011. Dr. Washam was presented with various awards upon graduation. These included Dean’s List honors, the Senior Intern Assistant Award, and the Award of Excellence from the Division of Research. He has completed many hours of post graduate education focusing on nutrition, supplementation and injury recovery.
Dr. Washam and his wife Kassie reside in Mason, Oh with their two daughters, Lillian and Wren. In his free time, Dr. Washam enjoys cooking, exploring new restaurants, touring local craft breweries and reading. He also spends a great deal of time outdoors with his family and his Beagle, Willow. Dr. Washam is a music enthusiast and listens to all genres of music. He especially loves classic rock from the 60’s and 70’s. His favorite band of all time is Led Zeppelin.

Brooke Snyder, Operations Manager

Brooke had never been to a medical office where she really felt like they cared more about her than her money until she came to DCW as a patient. DCW made it so easy to arrange financial payment with, they were compassionate, dedicated and most importantly 100% honest. The team addressed all aspects of her health and well-being, above and beyond chiropractic care. Her initial impression of chiropractic offices were that they would only adjust then send her on her way. She realized that she was wrong. Because of her experience as a patient at DCW she realized she wanted to pursue a career within it. She saw everything she wanted in healthcare at DCW. Finally, a place where patient care really comes first! She comes to DCW with a degree in Nursing and a background in finance. When someone asks her “Why DCW?” she cannot think of one reason why not.
Brooke has a background in business finance and computer technology prior to the start of her medical career. She attended Southern State and obtained an Associate’s Degree in Science, R.N. Sh began working from DCW in December of 2014.
Brooke has five beautiful girls from 15 to 6 years old. She is married to Jamey Snyder who has two boys of his own. She lives on a two acre farm in the country with horses, dogs, cats, and a pot belly pig. Brooke enjoys spending time with her very active family and watching their kids play sports.

Nicole Foreman, Licensed Massage Therapist

Nicole always wanted a career that was focused on helping people. It wasn’t until she drove past the Dayton School of Medical Massage on a daily basis that it became clear what she was meant to do. She enrolled as soon as she could and it has been the best decision she has ever made. She loves the feeling of knowing she has alleviated someone’s pain and possibly made their day better in some way. She had been working alongside chiropractors for over 7 years before joining the DCW team. Before DCW she never really felt her opinions and insights were valued or even asked for, which she felt hindered patient care and the effectiveness of each treatment. At DCW she feels valued and part of a practice that is focused on changing the approach of wellness with cohesive and effective patient care.
Nicole is a graduate of the Dayton School of Medical Massage and obtained her license in 2008. She utilizes Deep Tissue, Swedish and Thai massage techniques to relieve pain, tension, and stress while increasing range of motion and flexibility.
Nicole is married to her husband of 5 years and they one daughter, Rylee, and one child on the way due in September 2016. As a family they enjoy camping, hiking and spending time at the lake during the summer.

Erika Pantona, Insurance Specialist

Erika started coming to DCW in 2010 after spending two years in substantial pain after an injury. She had spent those two years at various specialists and taking medications to simply get up in the morning due to the pain. She was 18 when she found herself facing a major, life altering surgery (SI Fusion) and realized there must be another way. When she began her treatment plan at DCW she started to have days with little or no pain. She stopped taking her medications and realized they had been affecting her overall mood. In 2015 Erika joined the DCW team because they allowed her to live her life once again. She wants to prevent others from living in pain like she did unnecessarily, and to receive the benefits of chiropractic care.
Erika is well versed in the insurance industry with her previous employment at Express Scripts and Anthem.
Erika has two siblings and resides in Liberty Township. In her spare time she enjoys traveling and hiking with her family.

After moving to Ohio in 2010, I was in need of some relief from minor pain associated with working in customer service fields for 15 years. I was interested in seeking alternative forms of therapy and found a chiropractor in our small town. After going for a few visits, the therapy seemed somewhat outdated compared to what I had researched. In talking with my husband, he remembered that he knew someone who was a chiropractor. After just a few visits with Dr. Damron, I definitely noticed a difference in his techniques and style. It was nice to see results and feel like I was being listened to as a patient, not just heard…something you don’t always feel with doctors. After being a patient for several years, the opportunity came about to join the DCW team. It would be something different from what I had done in my past, however I knew my passion for working with people would translate well into helping patients receive the best care possible. I believed in the mission of DCW as a patient, and I am excited to be part of living that mission every day. 
 I am originally from St. Louis, MO. I graduated from the University of Missouri – Columbia with a degree in Secondary Education – Language Arts. I worked in restaurant/catering management for several years before starting a career in retail management and training.
In that position, I met my husband, Matt, who is from Wilmington, OH. After we got married in 2010, I moved to Wilmington. Realizing retail wasn’t where my heart was any longer, I began working as a substitute teacher in the Clinton County area. Matt and I live in Wilmington with our 6 year old German Shepard, Dale. I enjoy camping, boating, riding 4-wheelers, and spending time with family and friends. I love St. Louis Cardinals baseball and am a recently converted Cincinnati Bengals fan.
