Holistic Heath Care Benefits

There is a lot of averages out there:

  • body temperature
  • weight based on height
  • blood pressure
  • menstrual cycle length
  • hours of sleep
  • hours of physical activity per week

But who is really average? If we are average then does that mean we are all the same? Would that mean each disease or condition is exactly like that of another person so diagnosis and treatment should be the same? Yet, that is exactly what we are led to believe. The truth is that we are each uniquely different, with our own set of averages. Our normal may be a lower blood pressure than another. Or we may require less sleep than someone else. For a woman, her cycle could be 32 days, not 28 as modern medicine suggests.

If we prescribe to the idea of averages, then we may believe there is something wrong with us if we aren’t. But that couldn’t be further from the truth. Holistic medicine, what is practiced by a chiropractor, approaches diseases and chronic conditions from a different perspective. What manifests as a symptom, is really the end result of several factors. These factors are what needs to be identified, rather than simply addressing the symptoms. For example, if a person is suffering from chronic migraines, a prescription for pain only fixes the pain – temporarily. What causes the migraine in the first place has yet to be identified.

Wellness is a state of being. One where each system of the body is working in harmony with the others, as it was intended. To a Doctor of Chiropractic, the migraine only provides a clue as to what the source is. By working with the patient to uncover their personal health history, lifestyle factors, and other unrelated symptoms, the root cause is found. There are no averages, only unique factors.

There are trends in medicine today that breakaway from the law of average such as in cancer treatment. Doctors in this field recognize that each patient has a unique diagnosis, with different treatment responses. This approach has increased the number of people and the years of survivorship tremendously, especially within certain cancer types. Wellness doesn’t need to wait for a cancer diagnosis for you to benefit from a holistic approach to your health.

Choosing a Chiropractor

Educating ourselves helps us to make better decisions. For example, the first time we buy a car or a home, we look for as much information as possible. This knowledge minimizes our risk of making a bad decision. One that can save us money, reduce stress, and manage our expectations. The same can be said when considering to see a chiropractor. For many of us, this is something we have never done before. However, if we approach it the same way we did with our first car or home purchase, we will make the right decision in choosing a chiropractor to invest our wellness care in.

One of the first questions a person begins with is, “What should I look for when choosing a chiropractor?” Here are a few things to consider as you research:

  • Does the doctor offer a multi-functional approach? In other words, is there more than chiropractic offered at the office? For the best outcomes, look for a practice that also offers massage and rehabilitation. Why? Because pain usually involves not only the skeleton, but the muscles as well. The muscles are holding the skeleton in place, even in a painful place. You cannot only fix one without addressing the other, or no progress can be made. Likewise, with rehabilitation. The muscles need to be retrained on what their “normal” position should be.
  • Does the practice offer testimonials on both their website and Facebook? This will tell you a lot more about the quality of care the doctor provides.
  • Are the hours convenient? Evening and weekend hours are always a bonus!
  • If there is a New Patient Special, does it sound too good to be true or reasonable?
  • How important is education? A good doctor will be focused on educating the patient on how to stay healthy and well.
  • What about the website? Is it relevant and up to date?
  • What is his or her wellness philosophy? Is it a care plan designed to get you back on your feet again in a set amount of time or indefinite weekly visits? There should always be a goal where progress is checked.

In the end, you will do yourself a huge favor by learning as much as you can before choosing a chiropractor. It may also be one of the best decisions you ever made, too.

Make Your Training Personal

Walk into any local gym or fitness center and chances are you will soon encounter a personal trainer. Couple that with all the equipment, free weights, and class offerings and it’s no wonder that some people steer clear of these places. It can be a bit overwhelming and confusing, plus uncomfortable if your goal is to lose weight. Not because you want to lose weight, but because you might see people there who don’t need to lose weight. There’s nothing worse than comparing ourselves to others, especially in a public setting.

People may mistake personal trainers as those who just help us use the exercise equipment. And while that may be a part of what they do, it certainly is not all. Training, whether it’s to lose weight, build strength, or trim inches, requires specific strategies to make it personal to you. Adding to that any physical limitations a person might have due to a past injury or surgery, plus their current physical condition makes working out even more personal. The good news is that the ideal personal trainer will develop a program that is unique to the person. Utilizing benchmarks to note progress. A personal trainer will always be ready to make changes, too, always keeping in mind the individual’s goals.

If the idea of joining a gym intimidates you, that’s okay. It’s also normal. But, that should not be a reason to stop you from getting healthy again. Perhaps you don’t know where to start. Maybe you have concerns, questions, or fears. That’s okay, there is a place you can go to get you on the right path, in a setting that is more private. Rehabilitation With Chiropractic Care

Rehabilitation is an often overlooked piece of the wellness puzzle. We can be so focused on alleviating our pain today that a long-term solution is not considered. A proactive chiropractor will incorporate this key piece into their treatment. It will ensure that the source of the pain is not only alleviated, but corrected as well. The body must relearn its proper function. Otherwise it will go back to how it was before and the pain will return.

Pain is a powerful motivator. However, it typically needs to reach a certain point for us to actually do anything about it. Thresholds of pain vary from person to person. People can live with chronic pain and rationalize it away. But why should anyone get use to anything, especially pain?

Resolving pain is a journey for many individuals. It can start with taking over the counter pain relievers like aspirin or ibuprofen. But that only masks the symptoms. It does nothing to correct the source of the problem. Again, pain is a powerful motivator because once it’s gone life resumes. But over time, simple over-the-counter medications no longer work. Pain then motivates a person to see their primary care provider. Prescriptions are written for pain. Symptoms have yet again been addressed, but the cause still exists. By the time a person walks through the doors of Damron Chiropractic & Wellness, they have seen countless doctors and the pain is still there.

Chiropractic care is individualized. This means that treatment addresses the unique problems a person is experiencing. It is not a “one size fits all” solution. Chiropractors are beginning to realize that some patients require a retraining. A retraining of certain muscles to prevent the body from returning to the position it was in when they first arrived at the office. Enter rehabilitative care.

Rehabilitation is an effective means to improve strength and mobility. This approach allows the patient to rebound faster. It also has lasting effects, too. Pain does not return as it had before with other remedies. Muscles are no longer able to pull the bones back to their old position. A position that caused the pain. Rehab allows muscles to do the job they were originally designed to do.

Myth #5: Once you start seeing a chiropractor you can never stop.

This is the most interesting of all the myths. Perhaps because it uses the word never, like it’s some sort of consequence for choosing to see a chiropractor. It is incredibly easy to create a distorted viewpoint if you do not have all the facts. History has shown us that time and again, from thinking the world is flat to the moon being made of cheese. Likewise, the chiropractic healthcare profession has suffered from the same distortion at the hands of pervasive misinformation.

Yes, there are certain things in life you can never stop:

  • breathing
  • eating
  • drinking water
  • sleeping
  • paying taxes

However, chiropractic care is definitely not one of them, because here are the facts:

  • Many people choose to seek treatment from a chiropractor because they are in pain. Once the source of the pain is corrected, further adjustments can go one of two ways – as needed or stopping. The ultimate goal is educating the patient on how to listen to their body. By listening, they will know if their body is out of alignment and needs adjusting.
  • Wellness care is an option that some individuals choose from a chiropractor, rather than waiting for a problem to arise. As a result, this means periodic visits to keep their body in alignment. This is considered preventative healthcare. Still, the patient dictates when they seek out care, because it could be once a month or once a week.
  • A chiropractor is a person’s partner on their journey to wellness. Just as a dentist or an optometrist is.
  • Sometimes is takes time to correct a problem for a patient, due to the length of time they have been suffering from the ailment. This is normal. It is similar to how braces slowly move teeth. A person can wear braces for up to 2 years to get that perfect smile.

The truth is that seeing a chiropractor does not keep you going forever. Seems like chiropractic care is one of the best kept secrets out there today.

Myth #4: A Chiropractor is not a real doctor.

If you look up the word ‘doctor‘ you will find the following definitions:

“a person skilled or specializing in healing arts” (Merriam-Webster)

“a person licensed to practice medicine” (Dictionary.com)

Most people equate the word ‘doctor‘ with the person you see when you are injured or sick. However, this is not entirely true. What limits our understanding of a doctor is our experiences and awareness. It’s like being born and raised in a particular part of the country and never being exposed to the rest of the world. Our understanding is limited by our experiences. The fact that we have not been exposed to the rest of the world does not mean it doesn’t exist, or that there aren’t better places to live.

The modern-day medical field is filled with highly reputable and qualified physicians. However, it is also heavily driven by the pharmaceutical industry. We have been conditioned through advertising to look for solutions to our ailments with pharmaceuticals. In fact, as of 2015, direct-to-consumer advertising jumped 19% from the previous year to $5.4 billion (Kantar Media).  This industry only makes money if we are sick.

Doctors of Chiropractic are fundamentally different from what many would consider “regular doctors” largely because of their approach to wellness. Yet, the schooling for each is just as intense. Plus, they both have written and oral state boards to pass at the state and national levels. Chiropractors do not rely on prescription medications to treat their patients. Rather, wellness is achieved holistically where the root cause of pain is found and corrected.

Ironically, the Latin root for ‘doctor‘ is actually ‘teacher.’ When a person chooses the field of chiropractic as their profession, they are making a decision to pursue a career that combats the pharma industry. A chiropractor is most certainly a real doctor, just as a medical doctor is. Yet what makes them different from each other is their approach to health and wellness. At the end of the day, we need to decide how we are going to treat our body. We can constantly be on the defensive, only reacting when there is a problem. Or, we can be proactive with our health. Allowing our body to do what it does best, heal. That is the essence of chiropractic care.

Myth #1: Seeing a Chiropractor is Expensive

Expensive is a relative term. What is considered expensive for one person may not be for another. It may have nothing to do cost, but rather value. Take cars, for example. Many people chose to purchase a Lexus or a Mercedes because of the perceived quality and prestige behind the brand. These people feel that the expense involved is far worth it. The same can be said about appliances, clothing, furniture, vacations, and education.

Saying something is expensive can also be used as an excuse, too. Where is the line of demarcation dividing what is expensive and what is not for a person?  Perhaps the line moves depending on what the item is. As for chiropractic care, saying that it is expensive is highly subjective. First, is there a price tag you would put on good health? What about a price tag to get that good health back? The amount of money spent on medications for bad health is astounding. In fact, in the U.S. alone the pharmaceutical industry is valued at over 413 billion dollars (2014). Many would say that this is not health care, but disease care.

Chiropractic care should be viewed under the same light as dental care – with the goal being preventative care. You visit the dentist twice a year to prevent getting a cavity. If you choose to not have regular check ups, what happens to your oral health? It begins to decline, resulting in cavities and gum disease, not to mention tooth decay. Later in life, these same people need to invest in crowns, caps, and dentures. All expensive procedures, which could have been prevented with regular dental visits.

The reality is that chiropractic care is not any more expensive than other doctor care. Most insurance allow for chiropractic care, even if it’s not 100% coverage. But the most important fact with chiropractic care is the end goal. Ultimately, a chiropractor’s goal is to effectively address the symptoms you are experiencing by correcting the root cause. This process brings you out of pain and discomfort and into wellness and improved health going forward. Similar to regular dental visits. Being proactive with your health through chiropractic care is the most cost effective health care you can find.

How is cost effective, proactive, and wellness equated to expensive? It all boils down to perspective.

What to Expect With Extra Weight

One of the most popular books for soon-to-be parents is the book What to Expect When You Are Expecting. It gives a month to month description of what to expect throughout a woman’s pregnancy. Offering tips, developmental stages of the baby, and answers to common questions and concerns. A mother’s overall health can help the baby thrive through proper nutrition, adequate sleep, exercise, wellness check-ups. A lot of thought and preparation can go into having a baby. The question we need to ask ourselves is why do we stop caring for our body once the baby is born?

Granted this is a general statement, not one that applies to everyone. However, statistics tell us that this is true as a vast majority of adults are overweight or obese. Did the perception change because the baby was born and no longer dependent on the mother? The reality is that the baby is still dependent on it’s mother and those who care for it. However, if a parent or caregiver is not healthy due to excess weight, it does impact the child, whether we admit it or not.

Our children need us and we owe it to them to make that happen. Choosing to not take care of our body with:

  • poor nutrition
  • a sedentary lifestyle
  • not exercising
  • excessive drinking
  • smoking
  • extra weight
  • fast food

not only sets a bad example for our children, but also impacts our quality of life with them. We are purposely adding risk factors that could very likely shorten our lives. And what excuse do we really have? Are we too busy? Putting our kid’s needs first? Minimizing our situation? There are countless excuses we could use. Our bodies are not designed to function with extra weight as it impacts every system in our body.

Eventually this weight is likely to cause a major setback in our health, because our body simply can’t withstand the strain the extra weight. Just like a shelf that holds more than it should. Eventually it will collapse, dropping everything it was holding. Was the shelf poorly designed? Was it flawed in some way? No. It was simply not designed to carry more than it should. Are we any different than this shelf?

Belly Fat: The Silent Killer

Remember the movie WALL-E (Disney, 2008)? A waste collecting robot, named WALL-E, is left on Earth after all humans have left. His only purpose for the past 700 years is to clean up the massive amounts of trash on the planet. Yet, despite the debris, he finds a living plant within the rubble. WALL-E then leaves Earth to save his love interest, EVE, and is brought to a space cruise ship where the humans live. Everyone on board is so fat that the only thing they do is recline in hovering chairs, watch t.v., video chat, and drink their meals through a straw. There is much more to the story, but the parallels to our present day society is somewhat disturbing.

Recent statistics suggest that more than two-thirds of Americans are either over-weight or obese. 92% of the world’s population living in areas with polluted air (World Health Organization, 2016). Over 5 trillion pieces of plastic are floating in our oceans (Science, 2/2015) and our landfills are overflowing. Perhaps a scenario similar to WALL-E isn’t too far fetched? However, unlike the movie, there are huge health concerns associated with this weight epidemic:

  • type 2 diabetes
  • coronary heart disease
  • hypertension
  • cancer
  • asthma
  • sleep apnea
  • non-alcoholic fatty liver disease
  • osteoarthritis
  • infertility
  • metabolic syndrome

Most people don’t realize that not all fat is created equal. In fact, the most deadly is the fat around our waistline, also called visceral fat or belly fat. Research has shown that belly fat is associated with chronic low-grade inflammation. This inflammation is a known precursor to the health conditions listed above.

To avoid this health risk, the following recommendations have been established by the National Institutes of Health:

  • Males should have a waistline less than 40 inches, when measuring from the tops of both hip bones.
  • Females should have a waistline less than 35 inches when measuring the same.

Wellness is definitely a journey, with many obstacles on our path. Using this guideline to navigate your journey is a great place to begin. You can easily take steps today that will help you avoid conditions that are preventable. Don’t let belly fat dictate where your journey takes you.

Why Put Yourself Through Detoxification?

Why would anyone want to eat clean, eliminate caffeine, cut carbs, and drink lots of water? Because we need to help our body rid itself from a build-up of harmful chemicals and toxins. Purification, detox, cleansing, and detoxification are all words that describe this ridding process. However, isn’t our body designed to do it internally?

Of the 80,000 chemicals registered for use in the U.S., many invade our body with simple exposure. This, in addition to the waste that is produced by our metabolic functions, overburdens our body’s natural detoxification process. Thus creating problems for our immune, endocrine, nervous, and reproductive systems. Detoxing is a great solution to combat this unhealthy situation that many of us find ourselves in today.

In any given day, we are exposed to a significant number of toxins from cigarette smoke (first- or secondhand), pesticides, household cleaning products, preservatives and additives, air and water pollutants, plus trans-fats. Some of the toxins are out of our control because they are in the environment. Yet others we voluntarily expose ourselves to by choosing to eat foods that are highly processed, fried, sugary, and boxed. Furthermore, many of us engage in unhealthy habits such as smoking, alcohol, caffeine, and not exercising. We then make the assumption that our body can handle this attack because we cannot see the internal damage it causes.

Our liver, kidneys, and intestines are responsible for removing toxins from our body, with the liver carrying a bulk of the work. We are designed to handle toxins, but in a amount that is far less than what we are exposed to. Advances in food shelf life, farming methods, and convenience foods have put significant strain on our detoxification organs that they were not designed to handle. The end result is a body that is overworked, under-performing, and leaving our body carrying the overflow of toxins that cannot be disposed of properly.

How can you tell if this is happening to your body? Here are a few questions you can answer to help if your body is on overload and in need of detoxing:

  • Do you have any joint discomfort?
  • Is your head usually stuffy?
  • Do you crave certain foods and gaining weight despite your best efforts to lose it?
  • Do you experience indigestion frequently?
  • Any temporary gastrointestinal upset?
  • Have you been experiencing a low libido?
  • Do you feel foggy during the day?
  • How does your skin look? Are you experiencing break-outs or puffiness? 
  • Are you feeling tired throughout the day or having difficulty sleeping?

Detoxifying your body with a cleanse is similar to going on vacation because you are giving yourself much needed rest and relaxation. Detoxing allows your body to go on vacation, too, by giving it the tools it needs to purge itself of the excess toxins it has not been able to before. This re-calibration helps to sustain weight loss, increase your vitality, and improve overall wellness. So, the next time you feel the need for a vacation, think of your liver. Dr. Andrew Damron, Chiropractor

Dr. Damron established DCW because he was fed up with the current health model. Statistics continue to show an increase in pharmaceutical prescriptions to patients every day. Although he does believe some medications are necessary, he believes the majority of what is prescribed is actually harmful to the patient’s long-term health, creating another set of healthcare issues as a result. Dr. Damron believes DCW’s unique approach to achieving overall wellness will revolutionize the healthcare industry through collaborative care utilizing chiropractic, massage therapy, rehabilitation, and nutrition. The DCW focus addresses the whole person versus a only symptom and uncovers the root cause. He also believes that education is vital to sustaining a healthier more vibrant lifestyle as well. His goal is to create a healthier society and a better place for our children to live.
Dr. Damron began his medical career with a Biology Degree from Wright State University in 2002. He went on to receive his Doctorate of Chiropractic from the prestigious Palmer College of Chiropractic in Port Orange, Florida in 2007. While attending Palmer, he had the opportunity to travel abroad to Madagascar and provide chiropractic care to the native Malagasy people. Dr. Damron has continued his post-graduate studies with a focus on nutrition, rehabilitation, and functional medicine.
Dr. Damron and his wife, Kristy, reside in West Chester with their two young children, Graden and Isabelle. An avid Buckeye fan, Dr. Damron enjoys playing the guitar in a band with his college friends, watching/playing any sport, cooking, reading, and attending concerts, especially the Dave Matthews Band and Foo Fighters.

Dr. Washam was introduced to Chiropractic by his mother at the age of 16. She was working for a Chiropractor at the time, experiencing all the benefits that Chiropractic care had to offer, and thus began taking Dr. Washam and his siblings in for regular adjustments. Dr. Washam had been experiencing painful bouts of Strep Throat from the age of 8, which always included a 10 day course of antibiotics. While under Chiropractic care his doctor convinced him to avoid the antibiotics and receive Chiropractic adjustments instead. To his amazement, Dr. Washam’s strep throat symptoms had vanished within three days and he never had an issue from that point forward. He was so astounded by his experience that he fell in love with Chiropractic and decided that was the path for him. He wanted to commit his life to helping people through the power of Chiropractic, just as it had helped him.
Dr. Greg Washam began his college education at the University of Cincinnati, studying biology. After he made the decision to become a Chiropractor, he attended Logan College of Chiropractic in St. Louis, MO. While at Logan, he received his Bachelor of Science in Biology and Life Sciences in 2009. He received his Doctorate of Chiropractic in 2011. Dr. Washam was presented with various awards upon graduation. These included Dean’s List honors, the Senior Intern Assistant Award, and the Award of Excellence from the Division of Research. Dr. Washam and his wife Kassie reside in Mason, Oh with their two daughters, Lillian and Wren. In his free time, Dr. Washam enjoys cooking, exploring new restaurants, touring local craft breweries and reading. He also spends a great deal of time outdoors with his family and his Beagle, Willow. Dr. Washam is a music enthusiast and listens to all genres of music. He especially loves classic rock from the 60’s and 70’s. His favorite band of all time is Led Zeppelin.

Brooke had never been to a medical office where she really felt like they cared more about her than her money until she came to DCW as a patient. DCW made it so easy to arrange financial payment with, they were compassionate, dedicated and most importantly 100% honest. The team addressed all aspects of her health and well-being, above and beyond chiropractic care. Her initial impression of chiropractic offices were that they would only adjust then send her on her way. She realized that she was wrong. Because of her experience as a patient at DCW she realized she wanted to pursue a career within it. She saw everything she wanted in healthcare at DCW. Finally, a place where patient care really comes first! She comes to DCW with a degree in Nursing and a background in finance. When someone asks her “Why DCW?” she cannot think of one reason why not.
Brooke has a background in business finance and computer technology prior to the start of her medical career. She attended Southern State and obtained an Associate’s Degree in Science, R.N. Sh began working from DCW in December of 2014.
Brooke has five beautiful girls from 15 to 6 years old. She is married to Jamey Snyder who has two boys of his own. She lives on a two acre farm in the country with horses, dogs, cats, and a pot belly pig. Brooke enjoys spending time with her very active family and watching their kids play sports.

Nicole always wanted a career that was focused on helping people. It wasn’t until she drove past the Dayton School of Medical Massage on a daily basis that it became clear what she was meant to do. She enrolled as soon as she could and it has been the best decision she has ever made. She loves the feeling of knowing she has alleviated someone’s pain and possibly made their day better in some way. She had been working alongside chiropractors for over 7 years before joining the DCW team. Before DCW she never really felt her opinions and insights were valued or even asked for, which she felt hindered patient care and the effectiveness of each treatment. At DCW she feels valued and part of a practice that is focused on changing the approach of wellness with cohesive and effective patient care.
Nicole is a graduate of the Dayton School of Medical Massage and obtained her license in 2008. She utilizes Deep Tissue, Swedish and Thai massage techniques to relieve pain, tension, and stress while increasing range of motion and flexibility.
Nicole is married to her husband of 5 years and they one daughter, Rylee, and one child on the way due in September 2016. As a family they enjoy camping, hiking and spending time at the lake during the summer.

Erika Pantona, Insurance Specialist

Erika started coming to DCW in 2010 after spending two years in substantial pain after an injury. She had spent those two years at various specialists and taking medications to simply get up in the morning due to the pain. She was 18 when she found herself facing a major, life altering surgery (SI Fusion) and realized there must be another way. When she began her treatment plan at DCW she started to have days with little or no pain. She stopped taking her medications and realized they had been affecting her overall mood. In 2015 Erika joined the DCW team because they allowed her to live her life once again. She wants to prevent others from living in pain like she did unnecessarily, and to receive the benefits of chiropractic care.
Erika is well versed in the insurance industry with her previous employment at Express Scripts and Anthem.
Erika has two siblings and resides in Liberty Township. In her spare time she enjoys traveling and hiking with her family.

After moving to Ohio in 2010, I was in need of some relief from minor pain associated with working in customer service fields for 15 years. I was interested in seeking alternative forms of therapy and found a chiropractor in our small town. After going for a few visits, the therapy seemed somewhat outdated compared to what I had researched. In talking with my husband, he remembered that he knew someone who was a chiropractor. After just a few visits with Dr. Damron, I definitely noticed a difference in his techniques and style. It was nice to see results and feel like I was being listened to as a patient, not just heard…something you don’t always feel with doctors. After being a patient for several years, the opportunity came about to join the DCW team. It would be something different from what I had done in my past, however I knew my passion for working with people would translate well into helping patients receive the best care possible. I believed in the mission of DCW as a patient, and I am excited to be part of living that mission every day. 
 I am originally from St. Louis, MO. I graduated from the University of Missouri – Columbia with a degree in Secondary Education – Language Arts. I worked in restaurant/catering management for several years before starting a career in retail management and training.
In that position, I met my husband, Matt, who is from Wilmington, OH. After we got married in 2010, I moved to Wilmington. Realizing retail wasn’t where my heart was any longer, I began working as a substitute teacher in the Clinton County area. Matt and I live in Wilmington with our 6 year old German Shepard, Dale. I enjoy camping, boating, riding 4-wheelers, and spending time with family and friends. I love St. Louis Cardinals baseball and am a recently converted Cincinnati Bengals fan.
